We must be thinking of different kinds of tights. I think you could wear cable knit yarn tights and they wouldn't snag so easily.

My main issue with tights and hose is durability -- too easy to snag. Leggings stand up to much more abuse, and for my casual life that's more important than looks.

Also, the temperature range for tights is so narrow: if it's warm out, it's too warm for tights; if it's cold out, it's too cold for tights! I like the look of them, the lack of bulk, so I still wear them fairly often. I have to remind myself that fall is the best time for me to wear them; once there's snow on the ground, I am less inclined.

I think the jeggings will go back. I was hoping I'd like them as standalone pants, which would have doubled their versatility and made them worth it.

After years of trying, I have accepted I won't really wear tights. They're just not comfortable compared with leggings or ponte pants and the look in cases like your outfits above is not that different. I stopped buying tights. I still have a few left for the odd dressier occasion.
I am with Smittie and Skylurker that I prefer the darker bottoms, more tonal as you put it. You look so, so great in 7-8! Fashiontern also has a good point though about the leggings being in the wash. I so miss my fave ponte/leatherette pants when they are being washed.

Thank you for the feedback!

Smittie -- the darker bottoms give more of a tonal look, which I've been preferring over high-contrast lately.

Skylurker -- your point about the stripy-ness with the sweater and lighter bottoms is spot-on, and I would never have been able to articulate it. Too many horizontal lines!

I like the black leggings #7-8 better than contrasting grey #1-2.
I like the grey with the grey field jacket. With the striped top, that’s a lot of horizontal lines, not pleasing to my eye.

I prefer the leggings with the dress in 7 and 8, so I vote return the light grey jeans.
You look great in these dresses.

There is definitely a difference between the two pairs of jeggings. You've styled them very nicely YOUR way, and I vote keep. Your Winters are very long.

Yeah, that's the question. In addition to the grey leggings in 7/8, I have another pair, also grey, in a wool blend that are winter-only. they're really warm. I didn't realize I had such a thing for grey leggings! I suspect the denim option would fall somewhere in between those two, in terms of warmth/thickness. And then I have so many tights, in all the colors, that I should wear... But leggings really lend themselves better to daily wear.

These are probably bordering on wear-splitting, considering I wear dresses only once or twice a week for the colder half of the year.

I think the lighter color is a significant difference if it means you'd wear them with different things. If you'd wear them with the same things, then I think the question is how often you wear the leggings/if you can't wear certain other items because the leggings are in the laundry too often.

I think there's enough difference between the two, so the question is do you need to duplicate? Is this a look you'd wear often enough to justify having more than one pair?

For instance, I'm in the midst of my seasonal review and I count three winter pairs, which gives me options on a few different tops. Not sure I need more than that, but it's a good number for an outfit formula.

Still planning on returning these, but thought I'd do an outfit lab with them first. There are two different dresses here; the v-necked one is a dark eggplant, while the crewneck is black. I realize they look almost identical because my lighting is not great! They're both lightweight merino knits and I wear them a lot in the fall and winter, usually with tights or leggings underneath and some kind of topper. I was wearing the eggplant one the day I tried on these grey jegging things in-store, and the dress is the reason I ended up bringing them home. I like the way they look under dresses!

1 - eggplant dress with white denim jacket and jeggings.
2 -- black dress with white denim jacket and jeggings.
3 -- eggplant dress with grey field coat and jeggings.
4 -- black dress with grey field coat and jeggings.
5 -- eggplant dress with turtleneck sweater and jeggings.
6 -- black dress with sweater and jeggings.
7 -- eggplant dress with leggings (lower contrast than the jeans).
8 -- black dress with the same leggings.

Are the jeans really different enough from the dark grey moto-seamed leggings in #7/8 to justify keeping just to wear under dresses, with tall boots? Probably not. I do like that they're a bit lighter and add some contrast. And maybe they are more unexpected?
