Oh, I was also going with the assumption that this was an outerwear coat. If it's a jacket, I would toss it. It looks odd for indoor use.

I think what's confusing is that you call this a jacket, but it almost looks like a coat to me. It is very long. Do you keep it on for the whole day, indoors, like you would a blazer? I am having trouble picturing sitting at a desk all day at work in this. But of course - it just may be hard to tell from the picture.

Does it have buttons in the front? What is the fabric? It looks like it is fairly stiff. I think the combination of the stiffness and the volume and the length is making it look more like an outerwear coat to me.

If you love it, I'm sure there is a way to make it work!

I'm still a bit confused about this jacket, but I think I will keep for the moment and see if I can do something else with it. I don't think it'd be work the money to get it tailored so I'll see what I can do with it as is. I don't know what it is about it, but I just have always loved this jacket. Perhaps the relationship is dysfunctional, but I am willing to give it one more try.

Thanks for all the input.

A few weeks ago I went shopping in the hope of finding some non-wide legged black pants (that was all I currently owned). I happened upon a pair of skinnies made from a lightweight stretch cotton with a bit of a sheen to them. I was dubious but bought them and thought I'd give it a go.

I wore them to work for the first time this week with a tunic top and I give them thumbs up. So comfy! So I say go for it!!

Here is a pic of the ones I bought (the top I wore them with was longer than the one pictured here)

http://flickr.com/photos/yublocka/3262161719/

I didn't feel weird at all wearing them by the end of the day. In fact I'm now hoping to find some skinny cords or other non-denim pants that I can get away with wearing to work!! Some of my colleagues do wear denim jeans to work. I just don't think I could do it though! Although I will wear cons with no qualms - strange huh??

Interesting question on skinnies pants. Ann Taylor has slim fit pants that might work.
http://www.anntaylor.com/catal.....ory=Misses

I think they look professional for work. Of course, the pants must fit well. I also think you can easily wear it with a jacket.

I think the problem with skinny pants that aren't jeans is that they can look goofy. Or at least, that has been my experience. What you definetly don't want is a tapered pant, which seems prevalent out there, and looks dated. Perhaps what you want isn't skinny pants but more of a straight leg pant? Just make sure they aren't tapered.

As for skinny *jeans* worn to work.... even though I can wear jeans to work and that's pretty much expected at my office, I only once wore skinny jeans tucked into boots to work. And I felt funny and self-concious about it!!!! I think they are just too form-fitting for an office environment. I much prefer bootcut, or even straight leg jeans. My favorite to wear to work are the Hutton trouser cut though.

As for the jacket, is it a jacket? It looks like a dress to me? My first thought was wear it with tights and boots. But if it's a jacket that probably won't work, huh?

Have you thought about taking it to a tailor to see what they can do with it? My first thought was that this reminds me of a style that was popular a long time ago - jacket over a sheath dress. Could that work? I would still get it tailored because it does look huge on you. Perhaps have them shorten the sleeves - to short sleeves. And tailor in the waist - a lot - so we can see your waist. Then pop a black sheath dress underneath, one that is same length as the jacket (have the jacket shortened if necessary). A pair of black tights and pumps or boots, and it could be awesome!

Actually an emerald green or red sheath could look very pretty too. Hmm, if you had the jacket tailored and the sleeves made into short-sleeves, I could see this worn over a printed wrap dress, unbuttoned, and with a belt. Sort of like the "boyfriend cardigan open and belted over a dress" look... except it's a jacket and not a cardigan?

I'm envisioning something like this - except imagine it's a jacket not a cardigan as shown here:

http://www.luckymag.com/style/.....i_milcarek

You might want to even shorten it up to the same length as in this photo? For some reason I think this would look better short sleeve though. But maybe if you shortened it a lot, the long sleeves would be fine.

Anyway - that is what I would do. I'd get it some major tailoring and reinvent it, to wear over a sheath dress. It would probably cost a lot of $, and I would only do it if the quality of the fabric merited it. If the quality is there, then it could definetly be worth the tailoring. And of course, I'm assuming you have a sheath dress.

Thanks, Maya and Nicole. I'm bumping because I'm still a little unsure about this question. And may actually be two 1) should I keep this jacket and 2) are there skinnies that can work for work settings.

Nicole, I haven't tried wearing it with a dress. Interesting idea. Maybe something flouncy would be fun. I'll have to think about that. I don't know if shortening it would work with the slight flair that it has. Hmmm. Things to think about.

I think you can find skinny or cigarette pants that are work appropriate, but I'd try it out with that jacket (I thought it was a dress, actually) before you committ. I think the jacket is just too overwhelming for you, and I'm not sure if skinny pants will change the swalloping up effect that jacket has on you.

Maybe there is somehing you can do to make the jacket work? Have you tried wearing it as a dress? Or maybe you can shorten it to above the knee if you're really interested in wearing it with pants?

I'll be interested in hearing the answer to that question, having been out of the workforce a couple of years and a few more since I worked in your sort of work environment. Back then I would have thought they weren't appropriate.

You cancertainly find skinny pants. Try esprit first. I remember seeing some there. Some jeans brands also make pants. I'm sure others can give you more specific details but they definitely exist.

In my last "what I wore" post, I had the following outfit.

http://i508.photobucket.com/al.....0_9219.jpg

I wondered if it was something I should keep the jacket or pass on. A couple ladies suggested that it required skinnies. My question is whether there are any skinnies that are appropriate for work? As you have seen, I work in a place where I where suits and that kind of business attire. When I think of skinnies, I think of jeans which wouldn't be appropriate. Have you seen slim pants in a business attire fabric?

Does the jacket really only work with skinnies? Are there other ways I could make it work?
