I slather on Egyptian Magic every night. It's really intense - almost like putting solid butter on your face, though it melts into an oil - but it really works and in the morning my skin is smooth and fresh. I also use it when I get on a plane flight with the same effect. I think I read about it when some celebrity recommended it for air travel - but for my superdry skin in a cold dry climate, it works wonders.

My friend and I got "mini facials" at the la mer counter during an event and were chuckling at all the rich little old ladies coming by for the their re-fills. We followed our facials up with a cocktail at an old-school hotel bar (Oliver's in the Mayflower Park), to keep the theme going. LOL.

Back to skincare, though, my go-to affordable brand is Paula's Choice. So might want to check that out as well. They are online only; not sure if they ship international...but I've had pretty good experiences with their Resist line. My skin is dry, so if your is less so you might take a look at their skin recovery line, which I've tried and found to not be quite thick enough for me.

jenava, according to many derms, women who use la mer tend to preserve their looks the longest. of course this is sampling bias, women who can afford la mer can also afford lots of other stuff to preserve their looks or just care more about their looks and go the extra effort to baby their skin/self.

I recently got a tiny sample of Creme de la Mer:
http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/la.....am/3057002

VERY spendy, but my tiny sample actually lasted for two weeks. I used it only every other night and each time I did, I would wake up to lovely, hydrated skin! So I may budget in some money next month to get a jar for winter only. It is very stiff; you have to rub it between your fingers vigorously first and then press it into your skin.

Ditto for the coconut oil. I use it occasionally and it really does plump up my skin. In winter I like to add Weleda Skin Food (available at Target) to Atopalm, which is a super year round moisturizer for dry skin. In the morning, my skin is still hydrated. People with oily skin should probably stay far away from this stuff. Also love Cerave. I mix it with Tazarac, a retin A cream, a few nights a week.

I actually like Dramatically Different but I liked it a lot more a few years ago when my skin was less dry. Then I got the 30something skin change and also moved somewhere with extremely hard water, and now my skin is parched all the time.

I have finally, finally found a daily sunscreen moisturizer that doesn't make me feel sick at all and actually moisturizes pretty well, so I either just use that or put on a few drops of oil then later add the sunscreen. (The sunscreen is Devita, but it's probably annoying for anyone without my multiple chemical sensitivities - it's all zinc and it makes you look like a ghost at first until you rub it in really well.)

I, too, am dramatically unimpressed with Clinique's Dramatically Different lotion. And I will add another endorsement to Cerave lotion. I use a bit on top of other moisturizers to fill in the wrinkles and laugh lines. It is great because it is not at all greasy or oily or even smelly. Jojoba oil is not really an oil; I think it's a wax ester and basically replaces oils the skin has lost. I think I would put on a drop or two of jojoba, then seal it in with Cerave or Eucerin. Angie had a blog post maybe two years ago on her skin care and she mentioned the Eucerin that comes in a tub. I got the stuff for DD who has bad eczema and I think it was effective. (She is away at college so I don't get to inspect her skin very often!)

I use grape seed oil, just a few drops. Argan oil makes me break out eventually. Grape seed is a little lighter, and much cheaper. You can find charts online of the mix of fatty acid chain lengths in different oils. Dry or oily skin respond differently to different mixes, so it's worth trying a few different types if your first try doesn't work out.

i've been rejiggering my skin care too. what worked last year, worked last year!

i've been layering history of whoo serum and eucerin hyaluron filler day cream with spf then mederma scar eraser especially on the dry spots. the hyaluric acid in eucerin and allantoin in mederma are very hydrophilic and seem to suck water out of the air and keep it in my skin.

probably will skip the serum from now on. it was part of my summer routine.

Dr Hauschka has some lovely products, though I never completely bought their approach of not moisturizing at night. A bit of their facial oil mixed in with my base used to get me through the day. It's not cheap, but made by monks singing Bavarian lullabies to baby flying squirrels as they gently stir rare plant essences in golden cauldrons, or something like that.

These days, carter's coconut oil trick is my fallback. Works as eye makeup remover too, but I'm not sure what a dermatologist would say about that.

I also change to an SPF moisturizer to one without -- I know I probably need it all year round, but sometimes I need a break from at least one extra ingredient. My daily moisturizer is sooo basic. It's the $3 Trader Joe' brand moisturizer, it sinks in quick and plays well with makeup.

At night though, I use my Clarisonic, and put on an extra layer of something. Sometimes it's a bit of coconut oil, sometimes it's shea butter. Either way, it gets to soak in overnight so that I can wear my usual in the morning. Heavy moisturizers give me the shines during the day.

Edited to echo love for the Trader Joe's coconut oil...It's no more than $6 for a jar and it's really keep dry skin at bay this fall for me. Some days I use it to take off makeup, sometimes it's at night, and daily for all over moisturizing. I've been using it on my son as well, who gets really dry itchy skin when the weather gets cooler, so far it's working. TJ's also has cheap Jojoba!

You may think I'm nuts, but Coconut Oil is amazing! This is the same stuff I use for cooking, so I get it at the grocery store. I use the organic, pure unrefined, cold pressed version. Super cheap at Trader Joe's but most stores should have it. Google it for skin moisturizing...huge following. I also use it on my hands. Haven't tried it on my hair, but I keep meaning to. A little goes a long way, so I just scoop out a bit from my kitchen jar and keep it in a small jar in my vanity. It's solid at room temperature but melts very quickly with body heat. Plus...reminds me of the smell of suntan lotion when I put it on. The smell goes away very quickly once it soaks in:-)

My dermatologist recommend CeraVe. I have super sensitive skin and it is perfect. Something about ceramides repairing the skin barrier so it can retain moisture...healing too for things like excema.

Best part...drugstore, not high end. You can get a lotion or a cream...I use the cream in the winter. Don't get the sunscreen one...not the same, feels heavy.

Ornella -- I have oily facial skin but dry hands and feet. I love avocado oil. It's super hydrating because it's a humectant. I even use it on my hair because my hair is very dry. I think a few drops on your fingertips to mix with your current moisturizer would be enough. Avacado oil is about the same price as jojoba (which I am allergic to). But I think that will help. Also when my oily skin is feeling dry I do a honey lemon sugar scrub (be gentle!). Honey is also a humectant and pulls moisture out of the air to hydrate dry skin. There are so many natural recipes for using honey to hydrate dry skin. Some people even use baking soda mixed with honey to clean their face instead of soap. Here's a link where I read about most of this stuff. Enjoy!

Thanks ladies. I think I have to start with better night regime.

Jude :: this is interesting discovery and I'll check the product.

Ceit, Diane :: I find DDML to be fantastic for fast rehydration, but probably not very deep. It suits my skin in the summer.

Joyce :: thanks for the reminder of Ahava, I'll check their products as well.

Ornella, I'll be watching this with interest. My daughter (7) is having a terrible time adjusting to the winter. I've been slathering her with lotion, but she's itching terribly. Several people have suggested olive oil, so that's what we tried this morning. She was very happy! Fingers crossed that will be our solution.

I second the humidifiers at home, I have mine on all night long. Not only does it keep your skin looking great but it aids in keeping your nasal passages moist, a must if you have a cold.

Drink plenty of water, and make sure to moisturize all over before you go to bed. I use this gentle spray toner http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/es.....er/2810231 if my skin is dry during the day, spritz it on and add a little lotion.

Also, you may need to switch to a cream based moisturizer, not a lotion. I use philosophy skin care, Hope in a Jar works great.
