I got to try all this out tonight, because while I was biking home from the pool, feeling ooky because I’d forgotten my shampoo (got the bottle mixed up with lotion), IT SNOWED ON ME. Big, sloppy wet flakes. Not fun.

I came home, mixed my potions, ate my Greek carry-out, and spent over an hour in the bathroom. Henna in strong tea in my hair, covered with a plastic bag & eventually rinsed out cold, turmeric & honey in coddled milk on my skin (including under my eyes because I’ve read that it’s good against allergic circles). I used a scrub made of coffee grounds & sugar in yogurt, then rubbed on argon oil as Synne suggested and used an IKEA rubber scraper (for the side of a mixing bowl when you’re cooking) to take it off. Nomad, you weren’t kidding about the sludge that comes off a supposedly-clean body!

Now I’m all cozy warm and sleepy. When this bag of turmeric is used up, I’ll get the good stuff LaPed mentioned, but even the run-of-the-mill stuff makes my skin feel a bit softer. And I don’t look like a school bus! Thanks, everyone who commented.

LaPed, I have read that there is other tumeric that’s pricier, less likely to stain, and not conveniently available to me (though I suppose all this isn’t convenient either). Dairy products seem to be the “one weird trick” to keep the regular stuff from staining, but doesn’t seem to be working. I’ll be over here playing my sax.

I'm pretty sure there's a variety of turmeric that's marketed specifically for skincare applications because it is less likely to stain. Wild turmeric maybe? I've also read that mixing the powder with milk, honey, or yogurt instead of water will help keep it from staining skin. I have no direct experience, so can't vouch, and maybe you're already using those tips. :)

There are a bunch of suggestions online, but most of them sound like they would undo any treatment benefit. The least abrasive and acidic looks like a sugar scrub. I would vote for skipping the turmeric.

Thanks Nomad! I’ve never heard of that but want to try it. I’m trying to think of a way I can test the idea without putting out that much money for a trial run. Maybe I’ll try it on my legs & torso with dental floss, or look if the backs of any of my combs might work. Or maybe a table knife…?

Jumping on to the oil discussion, I don't know for sure if it'd help clean off the turmeric, but it might... I recently bought this thing and love it: https://eskerbeauty.com/products/body-plane

It's a modern take on the ancient Greek/Roman strigil (I'm sure there are other versions out there). 1-2 times a week, immediately after a bath or shower and light towel drying, apply oil all over the body (I've just been using food-grade sweet almond or olive oil), then scrape it off with the body plane. It takes most of the oil off so you won't be greasy after, and gently exfoliates. My skin feels extra smooth and soft for a few days after using, and I could imagine it might take off the turmeric as well.

So nothing on your skin elsewhere? I’m convinced lifelong habits of serious skin moisturizing are the reason “Black don’t crack”. I’m late on the bandwagon (& obviously not Black) but I want to slow the damage as much as I can.

I apply oil to my face immediately after showering. Any excess oil I gently dab away with my towel, but there's really no excess oil, it absorbs so quickly. That's pretty much it. I don't wash or do anything else until the next shower, that maybe sounds gross, but it's what works best for my very sensitive and acne prone skin. If I have used eye makeup I wash with a clean washcloth, just where the makeup is. I change oils depending on my mood and the season. Some of my favourites are argan and hemp seed. Food grade organic cold pressed pure oils.

Synne, I was hoping you’d come along with your oils! What kind do you use for your body? I can’t imagine putting it on my face, but I’m starting to notice old lady wrinkly skin. It’s mostly at my knees and elbows right now.

Interesting about your skin & shower temps. When I wash my hair, I always do the final rinse in the coldest water I can stand, and I know I like showers and hair washing at cooler temps than many.

Oil cleansing will probably remove the colour? A digression, but I have never used body lotion. If I end my shower with cold water the moisture seems to lock in. And when I use too hot showers too long my skin really takes a beating, it cracks and itches, especially my feet and heels.. don't know the science behind this, but that's my own experience.

Rachylou, yep—pure diy. My son just shakes his head. “I don’t understand why you do this”. There are tons of recipes involving turmeric online. From the preambles, I gather that it’s a thing in S Asia, but some other places use it too, like brides in Malaysia.

Sorry for flooding the forum lately. Bizarrely for as much as I’ve been posting, my phone says I’m spending less time on ylf.

Angie’s post today mentions lotion. I am happy with the Nivea I use once or twice a day, but I occasionally enjoy using a tumeric treatment. I like the way it feels later, but the visuals are not so great—stained sheets & undies (including my pink Stella McCartney bra) and for a couple days I look like my friend Lisa S here.

I’ve tried following up with coffee grounds in yogurt, but it doesn’t do a great job.

Does anyone have either a tumeric body mask recipe that won’t stain my skin or a good way to get the color off my skin afterwards, before I move on to stain everything else?
