Really happy to hear you figured out the culprit. I always kind of wanted to try that cheek stain.

Theresa--what was the preservative in the wine? I am so curious. I don't think of wine as having preservatives, but is that what they always mean by "contains sulfites"?

Fantastic!! You are not the only one to break out from BM. Like most skin products, some people love it to death and some people can't get it to work for them. I'm so glad you found a Tarte you like! I, personally, love the cheek stains.

njw, I'm not sure how much coverage you want but if you like fuller coverage, you probably won't like the Tarte "foundation." It feels more like a tinted moisturizer. I guess if you really did a thick application it could be more foundation-like, but I have never tried it because I don't like the look or feel of heavy makeup. It also has a bit of shimmer to it, which some of the reviews on Sephora complain about, but I like it. It's very subtle and gives an overall illuminating look rather than making your face look sparkly.

NK: I've been told by my dermatologist that sunscreens in things (like makeup, moisturizers) have little efficacy, and that I should be wearing SPF 30 separately every day... (and I'm brown skinned and have never sunburned in my life even though I never really wore any sunscreen beyond SPF 15 in moisturizer...but sun damage does show up as wrinkles later) she recommended Blue Lizard and I've had a good experience with it over the last several months of using it. It actually does a reasonably good job at moisturizing (at least when it's warm), so I don't need to apply anything else...

I'm so glad that you figured out your skin issue. Skin issues are SUCH a drag!! Also very happy you've got a makeup you're happy with. I do like the Tarte cheek stain, esp. good for summer. Very subtle, too. If it doesn't bother your skin I think you'll like it because it's simple and understated.

That makes sense. I've heard of others having similar skin issues from Bare Minerals. Hopefully you've found the culprit.

I found out last week that part of my own skin problems could be due to wearing makeup with sunscreen in it. For years I've worn a light oil-free moisturizer with sunscreen followed by makeup with sunscreen thinking I was doing my skin a favor. A dermatologist informed me I wasn't.

Oh Maya that is great news!

I recently worked out that my evening wine (which was a new one that contained a preservative I don't tolerate well), not only set off my asthma, but also my skin flare ups too.

Good to hear that. There is nothing as frustrating as skin issues.
Sometimes cosmetic products behave badly on my skin too. Several times I even had an allergic reaction - got all red and puffy. Awful!

My skin has improved massively and I think I figured out why so I thought I'd post a followup:

I realized that my skin issues roughly corresponded with the time that I have been using Bare Minerals. I was liking it less and less by the day. It seemed to emphasize my large pores and looked rather cakey in certain areas (even though I used a miniscule amount and buffed like mad). I stopped using it, and my skin improved within days. It isn't perfect and never will be, but it's back to normal at any rate. I'm not dissing BM. Obviously a lot of women love it and have success with it, but I guess it wasn't meant for my skin type.

I have gone back to Tarte, having found my compatible shade. I just took a bunch of samples and matched myself instead of relying on someone else and it seemed to do the trick. Thinking of trying the cheek stain next...but baby steps for now...

Anyway, thanks to everyone for putting up with my whining. It was really bad at the time but seems to have improved considerably and I'm relieved.
