Thank you Kary ! I had never heard of that. I will investigate. And I too, am planning on budgeting less for clothes. I am in a really good state with my clothes and footwear and want to divert as much of my budget as possible toward my skin. Good Luck to all those wanting to try it too. : )

KG, My husband doesn't care as long as it is not another line item for the budget ( which I handle anyway ) but we are not willing to cut back on savings so the best place is my wardrobe line item.

thanks for the tip on the peel . . . I have melasma too, that didn't do so well with the IPL as the little sunspots do. Might have to see about Melanage this winter.

Ugh, melasma, the bane of my skin. Ten years back I had two erbium laser procedures, but they ended up leaving hyper pigmentation marks and areas of unevenness. Very painful. Would not recommend. I felt light therapy like IPL only made it worse too.

THEN I discovered the Melanage Peel and haven't looked back. It gets rid of the brown, is painless and is chemical, not laser.

I go in every 5-6 months. My lady paints on a mask and I wear it home for 6 hours. I wash it off. I look pink. I peel for days. I look fresh! the brown is gone!

I also like the Vbeam laser for redness once in awhile.

Soon I will try out Titan laser for tightening,

At 50 I am pulling out the big guns now. My wardrobe will have to be sacrificed for beauty I am afraid, so I am only buying classic pieces now....

I've been lurking, reading with interest. I'm very spotty -- always have been -- and I seriously can't tell what's an age spot, what's a freckle, and what's a mole sometimes. But I do see some patches on my face and hands that I'd be interested in treating if there is a good chance of lasting results. Thanks for sharing.

There are many different kinds of laser treatments, so make sure the one you're looking at addresses your concerns. I recently had 3 Fraxel laser treatments for rejuvenation. Fraxel is also used for sun damage. I elected to have anesthesia because it can be painful. The rejuvenation treatments go deeper than the resurfacing treatments.I am very pleased with the results. Some lines have softened, others are gone. My overall skintone is better, also. I plan to have a treatment every 8 or so months for maintenance. Cost was $800 per treatment plus $300 for anesthesia. Good luck!

Thank you so much everyone !!

I have a lot of sun damage on one side of my face from a decade of a long commute, despite my vigilance with sunscreen. My treatments would be 3 for around $2500. I use tinted sunscreen now and it gives me a little coverage. I don't do a lot either for grooming services. I have started going to a great stylist and he is only $50. That is it. Though I do want to start doing a facial a couple of times a year.

I am definitely going to save up for this and shop around a little to price compare. : )

I won't do lasers but I have had good success with salicylic acid on raised dark spots. I use a 20% that I order online -- it can burn if you have sensitive skin so you have to be very careful. The directions say to only leave it on like 10-30 seconds and then rinse off, but I actually leave it on my spots (applied very carefully with a Q-tip) much longer. After two treatments I give it a rest and usually within another day the skin flakes off where the spots are and reduces them. I find that for me it helps to use a mild exfoliating agent or washcloth at least. I repeat as needed every couple of weeks. I got rid of a very large dark area that was near one of my ears using this and also using Lugol's Iodine. I alternated treatments. Iodine kind of burns too and it of course is bright orange for several hours so you need to do it overnight or on an off day. I'm in the sun quite a lot and have been most of my life living in Texas and loving the outdoors.

I tried the Obagi first, too. Marginal results.
My treatments were 2 @ $500 and a last partial one at prorated $250. $1250 total. But I also do no salon services beyond a haircut 3 or 4 times a year. I think I could do xmas treatments every year at the $350 if I used gift money towards half of it. That would fit into my idea of a normal budget.

I have lots of freckles and brown spots due to a childhood in Los Angeles and no sunscreen (what was my mom thinking? I blistered every year!) Plus some redness around my nose and a bit on my chin (second pregnancy)...

Finally, last March/April, I had 2 ExcelV laser treatments to treat brown spots and capillaries--different settings target the two, tho' there is overlap. A week after the second treatment, I thought: I wish I did this 10 years ago! My face was so much clearer and brighter without being weird in any way. Plus there was a little bit of swelling which means lines were less visible. I had no bruising.

Maybe 6 weeks afterwards, I felt my face still looked better than before treatments. However, like Mo, I am outside a lot. I wear hats + high SPF, but I'm still out in the brightness. The brown spots will come back if you are outside a lot; my capillaries are not completely gone.

I had two treatments and a follow-up (total: $550). I do not do facials, or treatments, or services (massages); this was a splurge. If money was no object, I'd do this once a year to keep my skin bright. I'd recommend this treatment, but with the caveats mentioned above (not necessarily permanent).

I've had two types of treatment. I had 3 laser treatments on my face for brown spots and rosacea. This was several years ago, and the dermatologist used two different types of lasers with each treatment. At the time the clinic offered four treatments for a set price, but I couldn't believe it would take that long. I probably should have had the 4th. It did lighten the spots and dim the redness, but since it wasn't so bad in the first place, I can't really say. I'd have to look through my old files and see if I have any before and after, or what type lasers, if any of you are that interested.

The second time was a routine visit to my regular dermatologist. I had a lot of brown freckles and spots on the backs of my hands and said something in passing that I wanted to get them layered. She told me should could treat them. It took two treatments and the improvement was great. I should go back and have more done on the fingers and sides of my thumb knuckles--they weren't really treated before. This was only a couple of years ago.

Before I had the lasers I did the Obagi on the face and back of hands. I should have just done the lasers to start, but at that time I wanted to start easy.

The pain during treatment was tolerable--annoying more than painful.

I also use the tretinoin cream but like Mo, can only tolerate it 3X a week, and I often forget that. Of course, you have to stop using it for a week or so before any face treatment. My doctor tells me they don't really know for sure if the cream helps with preventing cancers or pre-cancers, but there is enough evidence in favor to keep using it.

I'm happy I've done both. I still have to deal with pre-cancers (actinic keratosis) and that is much worse to suffer through.

My results were good, but not WOW. That said, I am still in the sun many days a week, running and biking and swimming. So maybe if I'd done it in winter and hid indoors it would be more noticeable.
I'm glad I did it, while we have the extra $$$ but would not have laid out that kind of money with our Tahoe incomes. I am debating doing a yearly 'maintenance' session each winter. (FL pricing was $500 per session, and Tahoe pricing is $350. Your area may vary)
Two things that did not change much - the melasma, which is separate from sun spots, and the red capillaries near the nose. The red looks great at first, and then a few weeks later it reverts more to what it looked like before.
I am on tretinoin cream as a follow up treatment and I can only tolerate using it every 3rd or 4th day so far. Will be curious how I respond to it once I'm acclimated.

I want to know too! I had the kind for redness/broken caps done about 5 years ago and it seems time for a re-treat. At the time, for the last one they went up on the strength and I had some bruising...enough to freak me out a bit. It went away just fine and the results were pretty good, but it has made me scared to repeat, so I'm in a stall pattern. I want it/I'm scared to do it again.

I'd also really like to know about the brown spot kind of laser. I had some brown spots zapped on my arms and the darker ones had good success while the medium to light ones didn't change much. The brown spots on my face are light, so does that mean they won't do much?

Very eager to hear about some experiences!
