You guys gave some great info & insights. I'm really glad I posted this. Ele, I think you are right on about spending where it counts. I am going to try the Aveeno Ultra Calming cleanser. I formerly used a Nelly De Vuyst serum (very liberally) but I'm going save up, try being more stingy with it and see if it makes me as happy as it used to. As for a moisturizer I am going to experiment with the Philosophy brand and see where it takes me. Olay products haven't delivered for my skin, which I'm bummed about because they are so readily available and very affordable. I'll post an update in a few weeks or so. Thanks again!!!

I have a similar skin type (and hate spending huge bucks on cleanser - it just washes down the drain after all).
Aveeno has quite a few options and I have liked the Ultra Calming that Kari suggested. Currently I use Zia Herbal Recovery cleansing gel - it is mild yet effective and no parabens or sulfates. I buy at Whole Foods.

I am not much help on serums but I have been using Aveeno Clear Complexion moisturizer very successfully all summer. It has a small amount of salicylic acid to help keep the breakouts down.

In the daytime I use Eucerin spf 30 and have never had breakouts from that one. Other sunscreens are really rough on my skn.

Let us know if you find something that works!

I like Aveeno, Neutrogena and Olay for cheap moisturizers. I just use a cold cream type of cleanser, and I love the Queen Helene Mint Julep mask. Of course, I've never had a spa facial in my life, so I can't compare. But, I do get surprised looks when I say that I have a teenaged son.

The last time someone asked a similar question on another journal site, all my friends and I rushed in and almost uniformly used Aveeno ultra-calming foaming cleanser, and we pretty much have every skin type imaginable. It's not drying, it's gentle, and it doesn't smell. Plus, it's foamy so it lasts a long time.

http://www.drugstore.com/qxp14.....alming.htm

I also use several of the Regenerist products for my neck and eyes, and the Aveeno tinted moisturizer is working great for me this summer.

Wilson, I think my skin is a lot like yours. It sounds like you've received some great suggestions. I want to caution you, though. Before trying a new skincare line, pick a time when you don't have to be in the spotlight for a few days. I've had some unhappy experiences.

One memorable time, I went into Nordstrom's for a makeover and ended up with some of the Philosophy Purity wash. It seemed REALLY nice...the first couple of days. Then, trouble happened. I broke out...not just a little bit, but huge, cyst-like acne appeared all over my face. Of course, this happened right before a big event at work for which I had been trying to spruce up my appearance, lol. Murphy's Law...

Just for the record, I like a lot of the Philosophy products...I just can't use that wash.

wilson, which products did you use before? It would be helpful to hear them, as we can then try to think of any less-expensive versions of the same for you.

When it comes to beauty, I'm a fan of "spending where it counts". For instance, I would never buy an expensive cleanser as I don't see the difference from brand-to-brand. Sure, some might feel nicer than others, but it's on your face for such a short amount of time, so any fancy, "active" ingredients don't get much time to work on your skin, anyway. For me, the most important thing is that it cleans off the dirt and makeup from my face without stripping it of natural oils or irritating it. I use a Canadian product called Spectro Jel (drugstore) which I bring over suitcases of when I fly home. It's most similar to the US product Cetaphil, but more gel-like, and far superior, in my opinion (I've used both).

Treatments, or anything that you leave on your skin to "work", I think it's worth spending money on. I have a hunch that finding a good serum is going to be trickiest for you. Serums tend to be very high-end in themselves (as they contain lots of expensive essential oils and other fancy stuff), and it's actually pretty rare to find one in a lower-priced line. If a serum is a must, could you consider using your old one, and just scaling back your use of it? Even using something every other day can make a difference.

As for a moisturizer, what specifically are you looking for, a day lotion with SPF, or a night cream? Let us know and we'll try to help more!

I have used the Philosophy products Sarah mentioned, specifically Purity, Hope in a Jar, and Hope in a Tube, and the Microdermabrasion stuff. I liked it, but I didn't love it. The cleanser does last forever and ever and ever. I still have some and use it occasionally.

I have acne-prone combination skin with dry patches and started having eczema this winter. Currently I use Noxema to cleanse. I know people say it's terrible, but it really did help clear up the eczema and it hasn't had a negative effect on the rest of my skin so I'm gonna stick with it. I have prescriptions for a topical antibiotic (can't think of the name right now) and Differin and I use both of those. In the a.m., I use an Aveeno moisturizer with SPF. At night, I use coconut oil to moisturize.

My skin's not perfect, but it's certainly is not terrible. No more dry patches! And very few acne flare ups now.

Rute mentioned Olay products. I have used Olay Regenerist night cream in the past and loved it, but I wanted to try something cheaper so switched to the cocont oil. I'll probably return to the Regenerist someday.

wilson, I hear you! For the past several months or so I've been using philosophy products. My husband also uses them, and he has had skin issues as well. They have their regular line (hope collection) and then an acne (completely clear) line. I actually like the regular line because it's so soothing - even the wash. The completely clear wash is a foam and tends to be drying.
Purity (wash) is so smooth. It's like a cream, and is non scented.
http://sephora.com/browse/prod.....oryId=3866
Hope in a Jar (moisturizer) is really soft. It is non scented and comes in an SPF also.
http://sephora.com/browse/prod.....oryId=3866
Hope in a Tube (eye and lip line cream). Love this stuff!
http://sephora.com/browse/prod.....oryId=3866
These are all of the products I use, but it looks like they have a wide assortment available. It lasts a long time, too. I've had the same stuff since before Christmas and there's still plenty left. And I bought the trial size collection.
This also came in the collection and I use it once or twice a week as needed:
http://sephora.com/browse/prod.....oryId=3866

Here are the serums:
http://sephora.com/browse/prod.....oryId=3866

And here is the travel kit I got:
http://sephora.com/browse/prod.....oryId=3866

And the Completely Clear:
http://sephora.com/browse/prod.....oryId=3866

When I was much younger my dermatologist recommended Neutrogena products. http://www.neutrogena.com/econ.....ment=women
My husband has used their Complete Acne Therapy System and liked it.

This question rides on the tail of yesterday's topic. My financial picture changed drastically and I have had to stop using spas and the expensive skin care products I've relied on for years. I'm having a difficult time finding inexpensive products to replace my favorites. I am 33 and have acne prone skin but it is more dry than oily. Also, I am allergic to products with strong fragrances. Can anyone reccomend some products in the $20 max range to try? I need a good moisturizer and a good serum especially.
