Hmm, I've been skiing and boarding for close for 40 years now (does that make me ancient school?) and have worn almost every conceivable fit and style ranging from the hippie jeans/plaid jacket in the early 70s (wet, cold and uncomfortable), to a technical Bogner one-piece in the 80s (never again--impossible to go to the bathroom, but it helped me win a couple of races!), to baggy skater style in the 90's (pockets, fleece, and duct tape galore while I learned to board), to high-tech skinny in the 00s (can't pronounce the fabric or insulation--too many syllables), to the rather sedate fitted pants and down jacket outfit I'm currently sporting.

My thoughts: If you buy REAL slim-fit ski pants (not indoor lookalikes), they can keep you just as warm and dry as baggy pants, so it's really your choice. Style varies from location to location and within the cliques on the hill (bunny-hill style is different than black diamond style). Locals ALWAYS look different than tourists because locals spend so much on equipment that not much is left over for clothes. Boarding gear differs from ski wear, so it usually is best to decide what will be on your feet before choosing your outfit. And warm weather skiing in cement (ugh!) requires different gear than heliskiing in the powder (absolute bliss!) so that might also influence your outfit.

I've tried those slim fit pants and they aren't very warm. I now wear baggy snowboarder type pants even though I primarily ski (although I can snowboard too, I'm just not nearly as good at it as I am on skis).

Huh -I wear plain slim black pants every day, K! And I can't see myself in silver pants ever. But flattered you think so!

I am totally not cutting a stylish figure on the slopes, for sure - I get to ski one week out of every year and am wearing a 10-year-old jacket and Patagonia fleece from old web specials. I think I just want to show off my butt.

Skinny pants seem more me (voted most likely to ski in cat-eye liner and retro-sixties style) than you (most likely to have ultra cool sleek avant-garde futuristic ski style), Dana. Can you find them in metallic? I could totally see that for you. But plain black slim fits? Doesn't seem right. Honestly, slim pants are made for warm day skiing. Even I bust out the heavy duty stuff for night skiing or for snowboarding. Maybe I'm old school (I started snowboarding in '88), but I think snowboarding always requires gear with a slightly skater-chick vibe.

Since I ski in the NW, Cascade cement the snow is called.. I have to have waterproof pants, due to the heavy wet snow and sometimes even rain. I could see in the Utah powder getting away with skinny pants.

Ag, I' m a hardcore skiier - I'm sure the kiddo will eventually be boarding but it's not for me. It's possible these are more boardy pants, they're Patagonia H2nos.

Well I haven't been on the slopes in a veeeeery long time....but if I were I don't think I put much in my pockets so I'd probably enjoy the slim ones for ease of movement. The few things I would carry would go in my jacket. That is, as long as the slim pants are equally as warm, because warmth comes first for me in those situations.

I wear white North Face pants, insulated but the only pockets are up by the waist.
Are you talking about snowboarding pants which generally have cargo pockets and a baggier fit? For the record I'm a two planker.

Most of us locals in ski towns (at least here in Tahoe) find the ski bunny slim pants are worn by the sometimes well heeled tourist who comes up once a season. Don't know if that matters to you or not, but they are basically looked down upon in my crowd. You know, kind of 'poseur wear'.

I'm out on the slopes in Utah thanks to our yearly family trip, and I can't help but look longingly at ladies wearing slim-fitting spandexy body-con ski pants. Mine are super useful with bazillions of pockets, and warm, but they definitely aren't red-hot-skiing-mama wear.

What do you think? Pockets or wham-pow?
