Thanks so much, everyone!!!

I found a ski jacket by Nils that has a waist (see picture below), but it proved insufficiently waterproof when skiing in driving rain the other day, so I'm stuck with my Obermeyer Zermatt for very wet conditions. Not very keen on that one though, because apart from how boxy it is shapeless, it has a lot of velcro, which rips out my hair, and the top part of it is very stiff and scratches and pokes me around my chin (and yet more velcro catches part of my helmet). I hate velcro!

I saw a very beautiful ski jacket on a friend of a friend, by Emmegi, but I have my doubts about how it would stand up to extreme conditions.

Meanwhile, I have discovered that none of my 3 pairs of allegedly waterproof ski trousers are sufficiently waterproof for extreme weather, so if anyone knows of any truly waterproof ones (Gore-Tex, do you think??) WITH LOTS OF POCKETS, and not low-waisted, let me know. Considering buying men's snowboard trousers for the higher waist and large number of generous pockets! Do you think Gore-Tex ones would ACTUALLY be waterproof? It is so frustrating to buy stuff labelled 'waterproof' and then find oneself completely drenched in it. Long and loose snowboarding attire begins to appeal!!

My 5'1" daughters wear LL Bean ski pants. They're tiny girls and wear petite sizes but they don't have that low-waist problem in their ski pants. They're just called "Women's Waterproof Snow Pants."

Thanks for your very useful replies everyone. I started wearing a helmet this year too, so I'm with you on the fixed hood thing.

I tried on the Obermeyer Zermatt because it is clearly designed for actual skiers, but my goodness it's ugly (boxy). Not keen on the excess space around my waist. I am not looking for tight, exactly, just a bit less shapeless, like the Killy Chic II (see http://www.theski-shop.co.uk/1.....white.aspx), which does go in at the waist -- but not down, because in extreme conditions earlier this season I ended up dangerously wet and cold in my down jacket.

I'm also on the hunt for high-waisted waterproof ski trousers, which seem to be very hard to come by these days. I would rather go back to my old-style up-to-the-chest salopettes than stick with the low-rise ones that are everywhere now. No wonder ski jackets need a powder skirt now. Any tips?!

One thing that eliminates some ski jackets from consideration for me is a fixed hood. I wear a helmet, so the hood has to be detachable--I don't want a useless pouch flapping at the back of my neck.

I wonder how much of snowboarding's influence is happening. I haven't been to whistler in a few years & didn't really see form fitting gear.
I've seen plenty of jackets with tech pockets, but trying to get a iPhone 6plus fitting in a tight jacket is a tall order

Lole clothes are great and well made (my parka is by them) but more for urban wear than actual sport (except yoga). A few styles might work as ski jackets and all definitely have gear features but the emphasis is on sporty luxe for urban settings, coming and going from or to the gym vs. skiing.

No specific Obermeyer recs; I'm not in the market as my 8-year-old jacket is still going strong. My SIL, a ski writer, swears by the brand. Another brand she introduced me to is Lole: http://www.lolewomen.com/whitebylole/ski/
Theirs look sleeker and also have pockets, but I'm not sure if they're internal.

Love your pic, UtahDesert! What a breathtaking vista.

Thanks for the suggestions! Any particular Obermeyer? I had an Obermeyer that I absolutely loved, but the current ones (at least, the ones I looked at in person the other day) seem to have much thicker waists and fewer internal pockets. My old one was very close-fitting and compact rather than bulky or boxy.

I second the Obermeyer recommendation. I've been skiing in one for nine years, and although I'm looking around for a new one myself (I've lost weight, I need a change), I do love my old one. The most flattering designs seem to use a different color (especially white or cream) to create an hourglass illusion. Please post the ones you consider and decide upon!

If you're looking for actual skiing, try Obermeyer. They are made for serious weather (high necks for cold lift journeys, ski skirts, etc.) and temp adjust beautifully. I never feel like I get overheated, but then I do run cold. Their jackets have tech or large pockets, though often outside. I tend to prefer that myself as I don't fancy unzipping just when I'm finally warm.

Can anyone recommend a flattering, stylish, hourglass-shaped (i.e., not bulky around the waist) ski jacket that is also warm and has several internal pockets including one big enough to fit an iPhone 6+?
