Lyn- I use measurements when I order things online. I've shied away from ordering if I cant return. If I get something from Ebay, I will ask for measuements if they are not given.
Diana- button downs never fit me either, too tight in the arms. Hedev never has to buy clothes 2 sizes away from his norm. He never tries on anything in the store and never has to return anything because it doesn't fit.

I'm not sure men's sizing is any better. Yes, they are sized by measurements, but my husband was trying to explain shirt sizing to me the other day and it just seemed ridiculous. Basically, men's shirts are sized according to neck size and arm length, which seem like really arbitrary measurements to me. Supposedly neck size is proportional to chest size, or something like that, and different fits (like relaxed, slim, etc) give you different amounts of ease. Sleeve length determines overall length. But what if you have a really muscular neck? Or you are a gorilla with long arms but normal length body? Anyway, you also often can't try on shirts because they come pre-packaged. So you just kind of have to know what brands/styles fit you, or you have to trust the SA's eye. J. recently went three rounds at Brooks Brothers before he found the right fit in shirts there. (It was ridiculous, they have four fits and he had to go to the second slimmest to get something that didn't look like he had wings. And he is on the heavier side of average.)

Yeah, it's just crazy - I'm a UK10 to 14 depending on the brand, and then US 0 to 6, also brand dependent. I have to go by measurements!! :)

Like Angie says, it's about how it fits!

When I shop international, I err on the side of slightly bigger.

That's a huge difference, Una. It seems that designer brands are especially guilty of crazy sizing.
Ingunn, I'm kinda scared to even try to buy somethi foreign for that reason. I just cant translate sizing.
Thistle, our clothes should be sized like mens, or Miss Me- by measurements.

I wish clothes had a standard size chart like shoes. Yeah, you may be off a little based on cut, but at least there is a standard!

I know! International size converters are completely unreliable. I'm going quite a lot down in US sizes, then way up in French ones, compared to the charts.

Yeah, I'm apparently an American 12 in the Topshop dress I just returned, while I'm a 4 or 6 in most store brands (Gap, BR, j. crew). So cray-cray!

Here's a practical application of Angies fit post from the other day.
WIW
top- Ginger G
jeans- Almost Famous
shoes- Levis
WIB
top- Lush, I've been buying mostly mediums lately, but tried on a small and the sleeves were really long, the sleeves on this XS are still long enough to scrunch a little
jeans- See Thru Soul, I usually wear a lot of 5s, I took a 5 and a 7 into the dressing room, the 7 was slightly tight, got a 9.
TR Casey in my regular size, the color is kind of a dirty teal
