I support bonkers sizing! It is a HUGE plus that sizes are not standardized. If you have my line of work and you dress women of ALL body types and heights for a living, you bless bonkers sizing. It is truly a gift from the bonkers fashion industry.

I'm with Julie. I find my size very consistent actually. Perhaps THAT is bonkers!
I am going to have to do this again, since I lost my list - but the same thing is true for me with shoes. I once went on a shoe-trying-on expedition to try and determine my size in various brands. I take a size 7, 7.5, 8 and even a size 9 in a recent pair of flat booties. Meanwhile, even if I know I take 7.5 in Clark's shoes, I ordered some nice sandals last summer (loved them soooo much), but they fell off my feet at the heels. I was so disappointed. I used to have an actual list in my wallet - yes, on paper - of what brands fit me in shoes and in what size. I have trouble with shoes for some reason - they like to fall off my ankles and sometimes I can't keep a shoe on at all, no matter what the size.

Same is true for clothes too, but I don't have a clear/consistent idea of what size I am in a particular brand or store - it sometimes depends on the item and how I want the item to fit. For instance, the SA at Gap was suggesting a size 8 in their Really Skinny pants, and for a 'skinny fit' I would have chosen a size 10 - but I actually ended up buying a size 12 because I didn't want them to be as body-con as the makers intended them to be. I was looking for slim, but not super-close-fitting pants.

I've also bought petite tops to wear with skirts (untucked). I am not petite at 5', 6" tall as far as I can tell. That said,a petite-sized top/blouse or even jacket can sometimes work well for me as a top to wear specifically with skirts.

Agree with you though, that sizing is all over the map. Things don't make much sense to me at all.
Yes it is getting crazy. It is nice that different stores will fit different size ranges, otherwise we wouldn't have much options, but it's really frustrating to never know what size to get because sizing charts and measurements are usually way off.

I don't shop high end very much (only the occasional Free People sale item) , but I do think in general clothes are running bigger and bigger, even in juniors. I find some juniors XS are too large for me, and in Nordstrom brass plum I fit a 000 shorts. I just think that's silly because I'm pretty petite but I still know of smaller people than me who must have to get things altered all the time. Also, on what Liz said, I have 36 inch hips but still find myself wearing 0's when the chart says I should be a 4. It could be due to having a small waist in comparison but I still think its too much of a difference for that to be the reason.

I think the Zara issue is related to their business model--- fast fashion. If you are going to produce something fast, you are going to have to give up something. And they appear to have chosen to give up consistency. It takes a lot of time to insure that all your factories are using the same standards, and you have to be willing to pay for someone to monitor samples and then final goods, as well as taking time to correct any issues. I'm guessing they don't want to take the time, and figure it's cheaper to sell, even at a discount, then do all the momonitoring

as for the other brands, I really found the post by the CEO of dobbins on how and why they chose their fit model enlightening. It helped me to understand how the target customer can change/impact the fit, and therefore the size

I am totally on board with this! Furthermore, I hate it when they give you the measurements on the website, but when you get it home and it doesn't fit so you measure it. Way off from what was posted! It makes me wonder who was weilding the measuring tape and if they had been sipping cocktails as they were measuring.

What really gets me is the brands where the sizing is not consistent from style to style. That sizing varies so much between brands is bad enough. Men do not seem to have this problem.

Years ago Marks and Spencer used to put body measurements on their garments. I loved that.

FWIW, I think they are a little random, but I feel there are a few very general trends:

I think that stores that strictly cater to juniors market (regardless of whether they pick up non-juniors purchasers) like F21 size smaller. I feel like those with a strong presence in the European market like H&M size smaller too. UK retailers are sizing more in line with American markets now, but used to size smaller. I think very high end tends to size smaller, but I don't have a lot of experience with that, so it is just a general impression from trying on a nice piece here and there.

US focused retailers for juniors edging into adult territory size larger. The whole Gap/BR/ON family size consistently. I think they let the BR sizing drive them. BR and J Crew size close to consistently with each other. AT/ATL does too.

At least that's what I see in sizing trends.
