I don't have a large chest so it's never an issue for me. But I do tend to either zip or button (depending on the jacket) to just under my bust or at my ribcage. I find it more flattering and possibly visually enlarging to my bustline.

Ooh, I didn't know you'd already declaimed about this, Angie - think that was before my time on YLF. Thanks for the link.

Now that I've thought about it, I think my own position is somewhere between the two extremes - I prefer for my jackets to button, if a little snug, just so I can button for weather reasons, but like the look of jackets that are a little smaller when opened.

I follow Angie's rule, too. In fact, I'd venture to guess that most of my jackets don't button. (I make sure they look like it's at least a possibility, though!)

Laura - I follow Angie's rule....and have found that most of the women that I know tend to leave their jackets open rathered than buttoned.

What Not to Wear's edict is that if you can't button a jacket, it doesn't fit and you can't buy it. Makes sense, but I recently thrifted a blazer that although it will button, it's a bit snugger than I'd prefer if I were going to wear it buttoned all the time. But I've noticed it looks a lot more flattering unbuttoned than most of my jackets, which look a little big when open and therefore are less slimming. Same with my cardigans, although it's less pronounced since they stretch.

Let's face it, I wear my jackets (blazer-type, not outer jackets/coats) open the vast majority of the time. Shouldn't I buy primarily for flattery in that case? Is it OK to buy things that are intentionally snug when buttoned, if you are not planning on wearing them that way very much?

What do you do? Do you follow WNTW to the letter or modify the rule?
