Great news! Agree with Helena that the younger generation has such a different attitude from what I have seen (living with a few of them). Thank goodness.

It's a great move to more inclusive sizes - I only wish for inclusive fits in different rise right now. So far it's mid rise ( a little bit available in the stores with more on-line ), high and sky high rises .
Some time ago - a year or two - I was able to find low rise pants at ON .
None exists now unfortunately. Hope that will change in the upcoming seasons.

Well done Old Navy, and hoping others follow suit. It's just common sense, but of course we all know common sense isn't always common! :D

DD (13) and I were chatting about some of the teen oriented stores and she noted that the practice of catering to one (small) body type seems totally outdated ... Hopefully the next gen of fashion lovers will insist on proper representation for all body sizes.

Micro grading sounds like a real improvement in some ways. But there are other ways body sizes differ too—in a certain size range, there’s always a question if a bigger number means longer or wider. Eventually the height concern ends (or else how tall would a size 22 be, lol) but differences in what part needs a different size certainly don’t. In my case, size 14 often was too roomy in the chest. Other women may put on weight there first. I may have misunderstood, but it sounds to me like ON’s old system of having two options in some sizes—extended “straight” size patterns *and* starting plus sizes—allowed for more diversity of body shapes.

Good on Old Navy. Interesting about grading and the term ‘straight sizes.’ I was wondering why there was crossover in the sizes between categories.

Blast, Khris :(

Anna linked to an excellent article, if you missed it. It explains the grading rules that have to change across a large assortment of sizes:

"Waldman and co-founder Polina Veksler self-developed a technique for constructing plus-sized clothing called micrograding. They recognised the weakness of the standard formula for grading towards bigger sizes, which they compare to making a photocopy of a photocopy. “After a while, the pattern becomes distorted (a pair of culottes in a size 4 becomes a pair of palazzo pants by the time you reach a US size 24), so we started grading between every size, and using fit models across our entire size range whenever developing a new garment.”

It works. “When you have 11 models (representing alpha sizing) standing shoulder to shoulder, you can see right away if a dress meant to stop at the knee does so on a size 4XS as well as a XL,” they say"

This is the care and control that is needed to create a good fit across ALL the sizes!

The idea of showing a garment on different models is brilliant. I’ve shopped a site that did this (described their models height and body measurements) and it really help me figure out what size would work best for me.

I HOPE they sort out the fit challenges because it means making extra patterns that comply with different grading rules in order to ensure a good fit in ALL the sizes. My fingers are crossed!

I am surprised you’re in favor of not having two different cuts to choose from in those 16-20 sizes. Seems to me we need more, not less, of that.

My favorite store, Old Navy, has announced that they are bringing back their plus sizes to all brick and mortar stores and doing away with separate pricing for plus sizes as well.
This is a really great step, and I'm glad they're doing it. I hope this is as profitable for them as I think it will be and that other retailers follow suit. I used to like that Old Navy went up to size 20 in straight sizes, and started plus sizes at 16, I had two different size versions to try from. Sometimes, a straight size fit better and sometimes a plus did. Now, they have done away with that break and gone straight from 00 to 30 (so they added sizes down, as well as up). I have noticed lately as they were implementing these changes that the sizing has been less consistent. I hope they can iron this issue out going forward. They have also changed their website to include a more varied range of models in all kinds of ways (including size). Now, when you are viewinga specific item, you can choose from three different model sizes.
Go Old Navy!
