It was around 1979, and I was working my first job in the toy department of a small department store on Greenwich Ave (just stationery, office supplies, some home goods, and toys). I worked inventory one weekend, where we got paid in cash - $40!!!! - for counting stock all day. I drove to the local flea market and bought (probably fake) GV jeans with my entire $40. I felt reckless and also very stylish.
