I've really enjoyed this thread Carter. I don't have anything to add as everyone has put it so eloquently, but suffice to say I'm coming back to re-read many times. I have slipped somewhat into 'why bother' territory lately and also lost my fashion interest a bit so this is all very helpful to me. Thank you!

Fascinating analysis, Carter. I so admire how carefully you think. You may have felt that September was a wasted month, but it sounds as if it might have been your most important month yet in terms of this style renovation.

It seems as if -- with some thanks to stylish step-mom-- you have found your "uniform" for this new phase of life. All these outfits look fantastic and could take you most places very comfortably and with panache. It looks to me as if they're actually all quite similar in terms of level of "dressiness" (I'd call all of them smart casual) -- but the "comfortably dressy" ones more often have sleeved tops (or dresses). Plus your amazing silver pendant. :)

I definitely had to rejig my work-at-home style, which had become so sloppy or gear-oriented that it basically didn't count as "style" at all. My mantra was: As comfortable as gear, but stylish enough to go out on the street. I've been largely successful in that aim and most days get dressed properly in clothes that don't embarrass me if someone comes to the door. Having said that, I am sitting here writing this...in my gear.

Continuing...

Approprio, I love your thoughts about the cultural influence. When I was growing up we dressed up for the theater, church, flying, dinner out, entertaining guests, etc. Somewhere in the past 5 decades, people seem to have stopped dressing up for these things. For me, dressing up (at least a bit) brings back a bit of the "specialness" (ok, not sure if that one's a word) and the respect for the specialness. Does that make any sense at all?

Unfrumped, I so thought that the blazer/Emmanuelle Alt look needed to be mine. Except...I really can't tolerate layers, particularly anthing that constricts my arms and shoulders. It was a dismal failure for me, but I will always admire any outfit involving a blazer:-)

Sterling...forgot to answer your pant question. In the earlier pics, I am wearing a pair of Chico's satiny stretch pants. They're about 5-6 years old and have seen a ton of wear because they are the only non-zip fly-trouser I owned. When I purged all of my trouser-style pants this Summer, I added the EF washable crepe ankle pants in black (worn 6x so far), the EF mid-weight slim knit pants from NAS in both black (worn 3x so far) and gray, a pair of temperate weather woven stretchy side zip pants in black (worn 2x so far), and finally heavier weight ponte pants in black and gray. I feel like this assortment can take me anywhere I want to go:-)

Ginger, thank you. "Intentionality" is my new favorite word, even if I didn't get to make it up;-)

Jenn, you are right! This really is a priority shift for me, but one that feels so much more me than the sloppy/who cares shift. I do think that intentionality can/will become a habit. Like any habit creation, I'll just have to be intentional about becoming intentional until I can unintentionally remain intentional:-).

Aww...thanks, Angie!

Smittie, you are so right about the simplicity. I have this frustrating habit of overthinking and insisting that things must be more complicated than they look, otherwise everyone would be doing it. Turns out the "secret formula" isn't so secret!

JAileen, thanks! Your standards made me chuckle! I wasn't even asking myself whether something needed ironing, and I'm quite sure that at least a few times, my only questions was, "is this clean enough?"

I was in NYC this past week and found that scarves really took my jeans + cotton striped top up a notch.

Loving all your comments and questions...make me really test my thinking! I want to respond to everyone, so I'll break it up so I don't lose it all in a crash.

Una, you said you "aspire to look as dressy as your [my] comfy looks". Which set do you consider my "comfy looks"? When I was working, I would have called the casual slide my comfy looks. Now that my slightly dressy looks are less buttoned up, I find them even more comfy than the casual looks.

Thanks, Jeanie. The power of the WIW pic is amazing! Just keep plugging along at it daily.

Rachylou, that's an interesting question. I think Sterling really captured the essence of it, but I'll add a couple thoughts that sort of collided into making this comfortably dressy formula. First, now that I'm not getting dressed for work, I was concerned that I was slipping into the "why bother...I don't have anything going on today anyway" schlump. I'm 51, so the thought of spending the next 40 years looking like I'd given up was horrifying. Second, I've mentioned my stepmom before...she always looks fantastic...dressier than most, always put together. For years, her simple little formula has somehow eluded me. I wanted to make it harder than it was because it seemed so unattainable. A few weeks ago, we were standing in her new closet. Off to the left were the serious dress up items. The next section to the right was hanging pants...knit and side zip only. The next section had a top and bottom row. The top row as all lower hip length sweaters. The bottom row was all lower hip length button front woven tunics/shirts. She waved her hand toward the sweater row and said, "Fall and Winter I wear something from that row with a pair of slim pants." Then onto the lower row, "Spring and Summer, I wear one of those tops with a pair of slim pants." That's when it finally hit me that it really is that easy.

Sterling...you are so inside my head, it's scary! I definitely feel better about everything when I'm put together/finished. "Intentional" and "finished" really need to be my mantras until this is an ingrained habit;-).

Carla, I think your mini refreshes in Spring and Fall were brilliant. I started the YLF journey back when I thought I had at least 3 more years of working, so although I needed a total overhaul, I did buy more than I really needed, given that my working life was shorter than expected. Your way sounds much smarter!

Sally, Helen11, CocoC...thanks!

Elizabeth, I did see your Summer cottage posts right about the time, this was all starting to percolate for me. I was purging my closet by moving the meh stuff to the "beach capsule". It finally struck me that I would soon be living at the beach permanently and had basically built an incredibly meh wardrobe for this new adventure! How ridiculous is that?

Posting before I have in internet blip...

Carter, this is an amazing analysis. I'm very impressed. And it has paid off in spades, because you look great in all of your various outfits.

Except for special occasions, such as my blue lace dress at a recent wedding, my outfits are fairly unintentional. My standards: Is it clean? Does it need ironing? Does it make me look fat (or really fat)? That's it.

I also love your diagram!. I wear a tee virtually every day.

Haha, Sterling. My closet is ridiculous. I've been purging since I got here... For *like* 4 years, and it's still idiotic, lol. I did get rid of the Cinderella dress finally ... Can't do Martha Washington Society anymore, but sometimes you just gotta draw a line, lol.

ps: Totally what Angie said about Jennifer Anniston. You beat the pants off her. She has such a consistent way of making things boring, we could all take lessons. Don't know how she does it... Ok, well, yes, I admit it's kind of impressive...

I really like your direction of being more 'intentional', and I think that's probably the goal for me, too, <sigh> more so than being fashionable. I don't like having 'off' pieces, or incomplete outfits. I feel better about myself when I look fully put together. And I like how you've pointed out that being intentional doesn't necessarily mean being dressier.

I think all of these outfits look great on you. I like that you add one or two things-- a pattern or a necklace--to create a complete look. It's simple, but it works well.

Carter, I really admire your ability to define and stick to the silhouettes that work for you. I don't see what what you're doing as a style shift so much as it is a priority shift. You've decided it's worthwhile to you to put in the extra effort to finish off your looks and are prioritizing doing so.

I wonder if this intentionality gets easier and more natural over time, or if it's something that naturally tends to slip, requiring us to refocus ourselves every now and then.

Carter, everyone's really said it all - I just want to add that I love the word intentionality. It's tricky to define for other people, but I can instantly identify it (or its lack) in my own outfits. And because of that, it's huge in determining the happiness I feel from what I wear. Go you!

This resonates with my deciding to be a little more refined for say Sat errands, but it had to be easy, quick and comfortable. For me that turned out to be mostly wearing a casual blazer- knit Blazers or linen blends- with jeans and loafers or oxfords, maybe taking time to switch to my one or 2 more
interesting seasonal handbags, but not always, and tossing on a nature- inspired necklace.
I found I was happy to repeat some
exact combos if I were in too much of a hurry to come up with something new , and this is also where I've learned not to have too many options that split
wears at this point when it's a small % of days.
Flat comfortable footwear options are key so as not to feel I'm " suffering" for the sake of fashion and because I want to walk fast! And maybe slong the lines of what rachylou said, having it be "
good enough" and not expecting to look like a fashion blogger.

Hej Sterling. It's kind of like how with salt and the way, sometimes, over time, people start using more and more until it's *whoa!*... Because the tastebuds/mind keep adjusting and don't register the kick. Sometimes at home clothes get to seeming not enough in the same way when you like fashion. So you go out and get some outfits, which you wear for awhile but then the wear rate tapers to zero because more isn't always the ticket when you think it is... Anyways, I figure it never hurts to do a double check...

I love your presentation and the flow chart! Read this earlier while I wasn't logged in and it really resonated, because I realised it applies to how I get dressed as well. Even more impressive now that I've seen the pictures.

I wonder if it has to do with the culture you live in. For instance, Dutch fashion in general is quite informal so many people dress very casually all the time, even at formal occasions! It makes sense that anyone who enjoys clothes would dress up their casual style and dress down their formal style.

Many of my more fashion conscious friends find this frustrating because they think people should make more of an effort. I have to admit I quite like it like that because it gives a lot of freedom in developing personal style and makes getting dressed that little bit easier for everyone (and makes those of us trying harder look so much better! :P)

My goodness Carter, I love and admire the way you organize your thoughts, and the way you present them. I can see that actually taking the time to THINK about this stuff is really paying off for you. I seem to have random thoughts here and there, and never actually execute them, or reach any conclusions. Posts like this definitely plant more nuggets in my head, so thank you. And I think the nugget from this one is the "finishing" thing. I can't remember/am not sure if you saw my summer post about amping up my cottage wear, but this is the same thing. Just because you are comfortable and casual, doesn't mean you can't add or do something that makes it look like you cared, rather than just got dressed. Far to easy to just get dressed.

One more comment. Having reviewed your pictures (GREAT presentation by the way), I am most impressed with the ensembles that feature full length or ankle length pants. It seems that as the pant length shortens, the style element goes down. This may be that the proportions involving the longer pants seem more correct to me? I'm not sure.

Are the longer length pants the ones you bought at NAS? They look absolutely fabulous on you (like they were designed specifically for you). Yay for you.

Hi Rachylou. I didn't read Carter's post so much as wanting to be "dressier" as more to be less "sloppy and unfinished."

I thought it was a great analysis because life changes (retirement, working from home) can all lead to periods of style shifts and frequently those style shifts are the reverse of "stylish."

What I think Carter discovered is to feel really good about ourselves we need to go the extra step and "finish" the ensemble along the same lines that we use when we are consciously appearing in public. A lot of people, including myself, don't go this extra step and they appear sloppy and unfinished. I know I do on weekends. Sometimes I am mortified when I catch myself in the window or mirror while grocery shopping. I literally can't believe I left the house that way.

So I too took a screen shot of picture number three. The words that jump out at me are "quality," "intentional," and "jewelry or scarf." Those words seem to say that the person put some thought into their outfit. They didn't wake up, reach down onto the floor, and put on the whatever their hand happened to grab.

These are lessons that I can apply to my life immediately. Not only did Carter identify that she needs to "finish" the ensemble, but she also identified silhouettes that look stylish and flatter her, yet are comfortable and appropriate for her life style.

I've often admired the older women in my community. They always seem to put together. I'm just realizing right now that they "finish" their ensembles. They are always wearing current styles. Yet they add some "intentional" piece that makes it seem both effortless and "finished."

NEW GOAL in my life. Thank you Carter.

Rachylou, what do you mean when you say that upping the fashion quotient leads to closet deadweight?

I feel I should ask why you think you might want to be dressier. Does being dressier fit with your life? I ask because, for myself, being interested in fashion means I often up the ante on myself... but that's led to some closet dead weight...

Yeah, Carter, I'm struggling to catch up after being blindsided by how I feel about my work outfits since moving to the Big City. I thought I could coast on my existing work wardrobe, but I did not count on the wear a 12 hour city day takes on clothes and footwear, as well as city fashion sense vs country fashion sense (and my desire to conform?).

There is also the resistance to over investing in new work clothing with retirement in 2 years or less.

I don't have a sure fire solution - however, the wardrobe refresh of a spring capsule ( ice blue and navy) and a fall capsule (olive, grey, purple) went a far way to making me feel better about my work outfits.

FWIW, every time I wore my white shorts or white jeans in casual settings, I felt comfortable and fab!

You are so educational for me! I am also struggling - it's almost like I've gotten too comfortable somehow. I don't need dressier but I need a change up. Love your photo series. Frankly I aspire to look as dressy as your comfy looks! Sometimes it's about how I feel in my clothes too. Yesterday I wore an outfit I hated and decided the whole thing was going straight in the giveaway pile. Maybe it has to come to that for some of us?

Thanks, abc. I know you're going through your own style shift at the moment. It's interesting the similarities and differences we all have. I'm attaching below another graphic you might find helpful once you adjust it for your goals. It's from the small notebook blog as well.

Sterling, I'm always looking for your pearls of wisdom...so DO come back to add your two cents, please!

Beth Ann...sustainable excellence sounds like a campaign slogan! We'll see if I can live up to it. Now that you make me think about it...sustainable is a very good goal for me at this time in my life. I do feel that I could dress from my closet within these parameters for a couple years if I needed to. (That was in no way a 2 year commitment to SYC!)

Aida, that's it exactly. You do such a fantastic job of dressing with intention each day, even though you're not going to an office. That, to me, is the goal. And yes...there is most definitely some boho in this 70s girl:-)

Yes, Carole! Regular WIW pics are a total game changer! I agree with you about not striving for killer outfits every single day...what I want to hit is my version of high happiness factor while looking stylish enough to be ready for whatever my day may hold.

Firecracker...I think where you have settled so comfortably is perfect. It feels like something in the dressy casual/casually dressy realm that really seem to suit you and your life so well. It's interesting that it sounds like your transition dipped into uber-casual for a bit too. It almost feels like an adrenaline release and then a re-group.

I agree, Unfrumped. It's her thought process/reasoning behind the dressing shift that really resonated with me, even though you and I might achieve it differently. And you're absolutely right about travel. I am planning quite a bit of travel in the not too distant future, and it is the comfortably dressy look that will carry me through. In fact...part of my criteria is "could I wear this to fly first class to Paris without a) the flight attendant asking to double check my seat assignment or b) being the slightest bit uncomfortable or rumpled?"

Thank you, Angie. Yes, for much of it I can shop my closet and remix. However, you know me by now...I have done some shopping. I will say that it has been very "intentional" shopping with these looks in mind. I have added a few bottoms (black and gray knit, and black side zip) in the comfortably dressy category. I have replaced a couple pairs of casual pants that just looked too tired. I have added a couple blouses (both from Anthro). I have ditched every.single.uncomfortable.shoe in my closet. I've certainly added some, but I've worked very diligently to evaluate each one to be sure that it would be my FIRST choice for more than one great outfit. I also totally appreciate what you said about ditching the tee shirts. I also (Not shown!) pulled the pics of outfits I did not like. Many of them featured just regular tee shirts. As much as I want to look like Jennifer Anniston in a tee shirt and jeans, I just can't pull it off;-).

GREAT analysis.

*applause*

My big question is - can you shop your closet by remixing outfits in order to "step it up" as you put it - or do you need different pieces in your wardrobe?

ALL these outfits are great.

To answer your question - I had a turning point in my casual style in my early 30's. (Not work style - that's always had to be dressy because I'm in the fashion biz). I was sick of not looking "grown up" and stepped up my weekend casual looks so that they looked more sophisticated. More wovens and tailoring. Less t-shirting. Now, I don't wear t-shirts at all.

Oh, how great--you are reading my mind! I just noodled on something related.
I read the Comfortably Dressy blogger's stuff awhile back and was quite taken with it also. It is not exactly my workday style perhaps, but the take-home for me is how to look for versatile pieces and be more fluid in capsules. In my ongoing edit, I'm looking for those qualities--what's something I might wear to work and also on a casual vacation? The things that kept me from overlapping in the past have largely been fear of "hurting" the work item--having to replace it--and laundering requirements . No, I'm not giving up all my dry-cleanable work-wear, but there are items that are more easy-care, and I want to "wear out" more and replace with updates rather than baby them.
I noticed this for travel for family visits. My prior decade, old-style of chinos and big sneakers is gone, but certainly I don't want to appear too chi-chi. And things have to be comfortable enough for walking and to feel "at ease", on island time if you will. So there is kind of an overlap between maybe Sporty Luxe and Comfortably Dressy or variations.

Then, at some point a few years from now, if not going in to work each day, I will be even more in this direction.
