Ditto what Joy says. Even without the silicon sachets/crystals (though it certainly helps), a set of ziploc baggies is just the thing, even in my sauna-style tropical climate. Adding tissue or an outer pouch of silk helps to absorb some more moisture too, but that interferes with visibility too.

By the way, the toothpaste trick IS dependent on white paste, not gel, which doesn't work quite so well --- but it *does* take a smidge of the silver with it (it's basically reacting with the fluoride, which becomes a great sharp acid with water and reacts with the silver particles in the tarnish, dissolving them away), so I'd avoid trying it too often on something that's antique or a delicate filigree etc.

From a friend who makes jewelry I learned to keep each piece that might tarnish in a very small zip-loc bag (can buy in different sizes at craft stores) with a small packet of silicon beads to absorb moisture. I save my packets from shoe boxes for this purpose. Even if your costume jewelry is not metal, any metal parts like clasps will tarnish without protection. This method has worked well for me.

I believe they sell anti-tarnish fabric? You can wrap them in that and store in a baggie.

Thanks guys! I will put them in their own little baggies. some is costume jewelry, some is sterling. Pil, I actually did that trick with a costume tassel necklace and it worked. Until now I used a pie tin.

I've used this cleaning method on some silver flatware pieces a couple of times. It's almost like magic.

I use a polishing cloth and store in an airtight bag or whatever fabric bag the item came in, just like Una. Is this sterling silver? Rusting in silver plated or silver custom jewelry is often permanent. Slerling silver items usually have a stamp reading 925 , usually at the clasp. I buy the cloths very cheap from Amazon. You can still try it, even if the item is not sterling.

Store them in an airtight plastic box or bag. That's what I do with sterling silver. Then I poilsh with jewelry cloths as necessary.

I don't think it matters if it's paste or gel Mo - both should work.

Thanks gals! I have Colgate - does it have to be paste and not gel? (I use a polishing cloth back home but of course I forgot it!)

You can clean silver easily and inexpensively with Crest toothpaste (I suspect any toothpaste will work) and then once dry, wrap in tissue paper. The tissue helps to absorb any moisture.

I just realized, as I took my jewelry off the temporary nails I have them hanging on here, that many necklaces are tarnishing quite quickly. I've only been here 3 months! Any easy, cheap solution to storing silver to prevent tarnishing? I don't seem to have this trouble in the dry air back home, where everything hangs on a wooden rack on the wall.
