I know! I wore one every day for about a year, when I was a grocery store cashier, while in school. Registers were between the doors and open ‘frigerators! I was so cute…

Thanks for all the feedback everyone. I cut the tags on this pair and pulled the trigger on the same size in green, which arrive next week. I have a feeling I am well on the way to a fully functional wardrobe again!

rachylou: that is the saddest thing I have ever heard. Why in the world would you, Queen of the Puffy, have no call for a quilted vest?

Bijou, thanks! As everyone knows here on YLF, it takes a lot of effort to make it look this effortless. My friends all hate it when I say that.

Jonesy, I am pretty sold on that vest. I have an old one here that no longer fits and Uniqlo now take part exchange.

JAileen: Yes! Wardrobe did a brilliant job on that show. It felt very authentic. My favorite Keeley Hawes moment is as Lindsay Denton in Line of Duty. A stunning performance.

Yes, Keeley Hawes is in Ashes to Ashes. Each season she has a different look. In the first season she had extreme curly hair, second season she had soft curls, and in the third season (what we’ve seen so far) she has straight hair. The white jacket was originally from a dead person or arrested person, and was given to her so she would have something to wear besides her undercover hooker outfit. She wore that jacket through the first two seasons. In the third season she’s wearing a dark boyfriend jacket. I first saw her in Durrells in Corfu, then saw her in her long running part in MI5 (originally titled Spooks, I think). Her outfits in that were kind of ordinary. In Corfu she played the mother and wore mostly linen dresses.

I love the pants and their inspiration! The AD jacket is seriously gorgeous and special--I think I would wear it with everything! I love it with those pants, but I also dig the quilted vest and the other looks (the new Jil Sander/Uniqlo vest possibly coming down the pike looks awesome--can one have too may vests?). I personally love all sorts of layering--the more creative the better!--which is what makes fall and winter so fun.

The blazers are spot on with the pants IMO. Love the addition of a quilted vest. I don’t have cause to wear quilted vests anymore, but I seriously lust after the one in 10. Seriously!

Star: that could be a solution, yes. There will be many, assuming the need arises. I can always tighten the drawstring.

Reading your comment re waistband construction and alterations I have had pants that are getting too big altered only from the inner seam and the crotch area, all the way round, the same amount. Usually 2 cms although up to 5 cms has also worked out well. The waistband drops a little but usually fits fine then and everything just reduces equally to fit a bit snugger.

Minaminu, Irina, shiny, thanks! Re blazers, I’m steadily working my way back to the “dressed up” mindset. Trying to get my head around how I want to look.

CarolaS, Ginger, heh. You’re both reinforcing all my arguments for and against sizing down.

Random notes on fit. I often find Uniqlo’s trousers run a bit large on my frame. Compared to the picture below, I am two inches shorter, wearing um, three sizes larger. Sizing down would fit differently, but might look neither here nor there. Waistband construction suggests alterations would be awkward but not impossible.

Here’s a link to the product. Can’t seem to add to the finds right now. Not sure they’ll be there much longer. I should make a decision soon.

Sloper, ach, sorry for my dreadful selfies. Black’s hard to photograph at the best of times, and yesterday was a gloomy day.

Firecracker: Good point about the vest. I like it when I can make a star into a team player.

Shevia, oh thank you! To be honest, I don’t feel like I’m compromising, just looking at new solutions. It’s really very interesting working with a stripped down wardrobe and a slightly different body shape.

And those Frankie Shop quilties are everywhere! They are super cool, but if I’m ever that trendy, it’s probably by accident.

Suz: so lovely to see you again! Was hoping you’d show up. Yes, I have every intention of trying that vest. I will probably end up buying it at this rate.

Stag: I was joking. You can come back now.

For the uninitiated, here is a primer on Bowie’s iconic gigantic pants. Aged 14, I made something a bit like them, but with not so many pleats. In a similar shade of green to those now available at Uniqlo, coincidentally. Back then, the words “Bowie” and “trousers” meant something quite specific when spoken together.

I think they are great with the blazers. Like Janet, I support the wearing of blazers as an everyday dressed down item and try to do that whenever possible. Why not?

That vest in the photo looks amazing! I think you should give it a try. It would also be super practical, I would imagine.

Yay! Please do not see your outfits as a compromise. You are an artist working with certain materials yes, but these are outstanding. Ann D. blazer is, of course, eye boggling, but I do like it under the puffer too. The big shoulder, volume on bottom is standout for me (#5).
Repeat pants in green. Yes. Anticipating weight loss is not a fun game - you will want to wear them right away, no? Wearable but snug if that is an option.
Puffy vest. Yes. Reminds me of the very blogger popular Frankie Shop puffer https://thefrankieshop.com/pro.....moss-green in silhouette and I love the drama of that silhouette. Not the same as other puffer vests.
Finally blazers any day, all day, to the thrift store, to the supermarket, doing errands. I would never wear them otherwise.

Oh, my goodness, yes! I adore these pants on you, and the way you're wearing them. #5 is just so great! It oozes that sophisticated, arty, slouchy style that you wear with such ease. Also #3. That kind of clothes-inspired confidence is something I can aspire to; not sure I have anything like what you describe with your Ann D blazer. I like the puffer vest over the blazers, too. The new puffer vest (10) looks like it might need to be more the star, though, rather than adding it to a blazer.

I also really like your chic sweatshirt and jogger looks.

YES to Bowie, YES to volume, and double-plus YES to velvet blazers.

Structure vs. Volume is where it's at - always.

Pix are coming up a bit dark on my screen, so can't see too many details - but the silhouettes work great.

Long time fan of voluminous pants here giving you a big 'hell yeah'.

I am especially drawn to 5 and 6, but I don't know if you have to totally stick with small over wide.

The new puffer you are contemplating (photo 10 if I understand correctly?) is fabulous-- I like the angled hem. It will be a given with narrow bottoms, but I think it might also be fun with the voluminous pant. Sometimes volume over volume works, and the angled hem might make for a striking effect.

I'm not sure what to suggest re sizing up or down if you get them in green. Unless you are into buying for weight aspirations, I would suggest you get a size you will enjoy wearing at your current weight -- with wearability at a lower weight as a secondary factor (I like it now and I think I will still like it when I lose 10 lbs....). If you're already losing weight, another option might be to wait a few weeks before ordering a second pair -- if you feel the black ones getting more voluminous than you want them to be, you'll know to size down!

Thanks for sharing!

This is fascinating! I love your process. Definitely get the green pants, and I'm thinking to stick with the gigantic size. When you lose, they may be tailored, but you'll get the fun and swoosh of them now. (Though it's a good point from slim cat that the green may be more visible than the corresponding size in black, so that's worth considering. I just hate to delay on something that brings such joy.) And I'm with Angie about the blazers. Wear them!

Ok. I will spell it out.

Bowie is my Fairy Godfather. He wore tailored jackets with gigantic pants. And I come from London. I grew up on that stuff.

Happy now?

Janet, thanks! Lovely to see you too yeah, I think if I go with the green I should size down, as slim cat pointed out. And suntiger, as I recall, I cribbed the vest over blazer idea from a menswear blog. It’s a good way to wear them in cooler weather. ETA Katerina, I look forward to seeing your version!

JAileen, doesn’t that show feature Keeley Hawes serving serious 80s wardrobe? A white leather jacket and some incredible boots? The shoes and the laces deserve a post of their own. One day I may get around to it.

Angie, you remembered! Perhaps there is a picture somewhere Much as I love the Ann D, I think I agree, the other jacket is working better here. I can see that combination being a go-to in mild weather.

Neon pink laces, you say? Are they … elasticated?

Phoebe, kind of you to say so. I am enjoying a minimal approach right now, but I do love a bit of colour and contrast. I think I will be needing more of it before too long.

Stag, that is an excellent question. It started with seeing how the blazers were fitting differently. Some better, some worse. I’d had to ditch a load of trousers, and I was asking myself, what would work? And I thought, big and baggy. Just like my Fairy Godfather. I wasn’t expecting to find a candidate so soon though.

You have found a great new silhouette! I really like the voluminous trousers with the blazers - 3 and 5 are my favorites. The puffer vests over the blazers is a great idea. I will copy that shamelessly :-)
YES to wearing blazers everywhere! Not too dressy for anything (well, almost …)

I’ve got to ask—did you see that pic and decide that was the direction you wanted to go, or did you have the outfits and then go looking for something that matches them?

I almost never have an idea of the finished look in my head when I start getting dressed, just go with what works best by entirely nebulous measures. When I try to “do” a certain look, results tend to be comical. I could probably recreate a single outfit by slavishly copying it, but I wouldn’t know what outfit to pick. The way people here see a thing, know it would work for them, and then to do it blows me away.

Your posts are so not like anyone else I don't think you really can "flood the forum" except in a good way, I'm really enjoying every second

Volume on the bottom, closer fit on top looks great on you, and yes to an additional vest, this outfit formula seems so versatile and flattering, plus the down vests really help to buffer the "fancy" of the jackets and make them look "now".

As a naturally color averse dresser, even pre current times, I love to see how you create interest and drama almost entirely with shape

YES to the new pants Ms. Bowie, and my faves with them are #5 and #6. I like a bit of tailoring with their volume!

WEAR THE BLAZERS ANYWHERE! Why not :)

Fun pants - total love! Great outfit collection- slight preference for lighter vest but purely personal. Your shoes are fab - work very well with your pieces.
For the duplication of black pants in green color - sizing down seems like a right approach ( black works better in big volume pieces - green may overwhelm a bit ). In any case - fab and inspiring looks!

I like the big pants look. I adore your shoes.

So right now we’re watching Ashes to Ashes on Britbox. It is a sequel to Life on Mars, which we watched just before. The clothes are of the era (80s for A2A, 70s for LOM) and the music is from the era, too. There’s a lot of variety, but last night they played Under Pressure, which I love. They don’t dress like Bowie, obviously, because they’re cops.
