A lot of wisdom here. Thanks everyone for the insight. Like Janet and Approprio I'm sick of the treadmill and prefer to just please myself. I suppose a signature style does take stress off the treadmill. But how do you keep a signature style without being dated. I used to like stevie nicks signature look...long Prairie dresses of lace etc. I reckon if she's still dressing like that she'd look dated. And you're right Rachylou...a hairstyle is not a whole signature look however I do think Anna Wintour does have a definite signature style. She doesn't wear the exact same thing like Steve Jobs but she wears what suits her and identifies her...bit like ines de la fressange.
And I'm feeling less blah....I've got an addiction to colored jeans.

Great article, thank you for sharing. I get bored easily and like to follow trends, and thus a signature style , even without a uniform, may be constricting for me, However, despite enjoying variety, I find that most of of what I wear fits well with my style moniker (Sleek Urban princess).

Thanks for the article! Great read.
I think I do have a loose signature but I'm unsure if I can verbally distill it yet. I've made note of some adjectives as Angie recommends but I not sure that's my current actual or my aspiration.

Nice article, interesting thread. I've thought about it a bit over the years and I feel I'm approaching not one but several signature styles, which is probably inevitable as my life progresses. It's a good aspiration.

I'm much like Janet insofar as I don't see the way I approach dressing changing much but I do like to keep it moving and stay reasonably current. That said, as I age I find this treadmill of change ever more absurd. I've always been much happier dressing for myself rather than someone else's idea of what I should be wearing.

I totally get it, Sally. I feel sort of the same... not down, but not feeling my usual interest in clothing and style. For me, I think it is about stress of holidays, job and family demands, weird weather patterns and feeling like I am juggling too many things right now. I manage to dress appropriately for my day's schedule -- and that is enough for me right now.

You know -- Sometimes interest in "style" just has to take a back seat for a while so we can focus on other priorities... like a fitness routine. (Yay for you with that!)

Anyway -- it was great to read the article. It got me to ponder a bit about signature style... and whether or not I even have one. Food for (later) thought.

I read this over the weekend too Sally. I thought it was interesting and relevant.

I can see I am on the way to getting a signature style, I won't ever be as precise about it as Anna Wintour or Judith Baragwanath.

I have just had a blah patch with clothing too. In my case the weather has not helped - spring has been so erratic and windy, and I have needed extra layers and covered toes. Great that the exercising is going well though!

Rachy- think of color palette, silhouettes or styles that flatter, and a style personna. You can mix things up within that, but if at least two of those things are consistent from outfit to outfit I think you have a signature style.
Like Janet says, it will evolve over time yet still be consistent.
I enjoyed this article, and I feel like I am developing a signature style.

Interesting, thanks for sharing.

The older I get, the closer I feel I'm getting to a "signature style," meaning my own personal way of dressing that incorporates but also transcends trends. I can see it evolving and adjusting over time to stay current, but honestly, I can envision the way I dress now continuing to work for me throughout the rest of my 50s and into my 60s, 70s, etc. I'm sure there will be adjustments and shifts along the way, but when I consider the elements of my style that have been consistent through my adult life (my color palette, fondness for denim and leather, what flatters my body type, etc), I don't see venturing far from the style I've adopted.

I feel much the same as you about my clothes. I aim to look presentable and put together, but I don't want the way I dress to rule my life.
Now that I'm older I have a better idea of what suits my body shape and my colouring, and I do tend to use the "uniform" approach to dressing, but I'm not sure I could call it a signature style: that sounds a bit too pretentious, if that makes sense.

El Cee I have missed the forum but haven't felt I had much to say... I'm not down about clothes just not interested. Barbara I know the feeling when you feel you can forget about your clothes but in a good way. I think I have a couple of signature styles I float between.

I looked at myself in the mirror this morning and thought, although nothing about my outfit stood out as striking, I looked well put together. I felt confident about what I was wearing, in both style and appropriateness for the activity.

A few years ago I would not have been able to say that.
