100% with rabbit and Laura. Jackets/toppers that fit in the shoulder might be a good place to start. Something like a good denim jacket that you can rescue from your stash? If you are starting uni, your high school clothes may feel a bit young anyway...what is your tolerance for repeating outfits for the first few months. If the weight loss was a goal, congrats. And most people at school won't notice if you wear the same thing everyday, unless you are pledging a sorority or smell. Clothes should be fun at your age, not another stressor. And beware the freshman 15 lbs/dunno if they call it the freshman 5kg or 10 kg, but they are real. Too much food, too little activity, too much homesickness piles on the excess weight. Don't go there if you can help it.

Get rid of the items that cannot be altered and put together o capsule of your best fitting things plus whatever you need to make the outfits until you can replace them. I had to replace my whole wardrobe after weight loss and you are wise to proceed slowly. Resale shops were a huge help to me to find things that fit and that I wanted to wear. Don't but anything just because it fits.

I agree with rabbit and laura on planning a cohesive capsule. I used to live in a college town and thrifting and consignment/resell shops were awesome...like a $3 DVF pencil and $12 AG coated skinnies! Hopefully, your college town is similar!!

I wouldn't bother to bring anything that doesn't fit you to the dorms, unless you will be literally naked without it. Could you sell some of it and get a little extra cash for new items? Otherwise I'd just leave everything that is too big at home and focus on putting together a small set of clothes that work well.

As others have mentioned, college is a great time to vary and develop your style, so you may find that you want to wear different looks anyway. This situation would be ideal for a capsule wardrobe that is mix and match. Into mind did a college capsule wardrobe a while ago that might be a useful reference - ETA, apparently she's relaunching her site so the page isn't up any more.

I totally understand where you're coming from ALeigh! I've recently lost a lot of baby weight (15 lbs in 2014 and another 15 lbs in 2015), and just moved across the country, too. My wardrobe has for the first time in my life become a source of frustration, which is how I ended up here at YLF!

I don't have any super useful advice. Personally, I've found it easier to go slowly, rather than get rid of everything at once and start from scratch -- I just don't have the energy or money for that and I suspect I'd choose things I'd regret later.

I purged a moderate amount prior to my move (though it was company sponsored, so I didn't feel too bad about keeping stuff, either). Now that I'm in a place I plan to stay awhile, and at a weight I'm comfortable with, I feel freer to shop for things I really love, but still taking it slow -- PPP, as Angie says. When purging, I think PPP can be a good thing too. It's really important to go item by item and reflect on how much work each garment does for you, and what you like/dislike about it. It can be hard to embrace the notion of placeholders, but I've found them quite necessary.

It sounds like you might need to identify specific wardrobe holes -- like Rabbit mentioned, one pair of great-fitting jeans can do so much -- and focus on those. Also, evaluate what items you have that can be tricked into fitting -- e.g. belting a shirt that's too voluminous, or experimenting with layers.

You might find that your style and the looks you want to try out change when you get on campus and are surrounded by other students 24-7. Therefore I might wait to do a shop even if time and $ weren't an issue.

It's good though in my mind to have at least a few outfits you feel really comfortable and confident in, and if one or two key pieces (like one pair of jeans that fit really well) can make that happen it might be worth looking for that one key thing.

I wouldn't bring a whole ton of ill-fitting clothes with you, although I might not get rid of them all either (are you a freshman?)

I'm keen to see, do you think it would be better just to keep all I have - too big as it may be - or to get rid of it? I feel like a frump in these too big clothes, but I don't exactly have any other options.

I've lost over 10kgs in the last year. Which means most of my clothes don't fit. I should be purging & replacing, but I'm about to move out of home and into university Halls. Which means I have neither the time or money. I've altered and shrunk what I can but some things just can't be fixed.

Either way, it may be a while before I can save enough for replacements. I'll try post some pics of some Things later on.
