Late to the party...some examples below.

Tennis shoes for running around town. I’m hoping the Seibels go on sale at NAS this year - they are almost worn out!

Rothys are my go to travel shoe - great for running through airports.

Tory flats and Botkier booties were both surprises. Can stand up to 6 mile days without blisters.

Style Fan, yes I had docs in the 90’s too. I bought these 2 years ago when I badly rolled my ankle and needed shoes with good ankle support. They have been unexpected workhorses and just as good as I remembered.

For "real" walking, i.e. travel or rambling downtown, I call on my Cobb Hill Bethany boots in cold weather and my Fidelio sandals in the heat (Bethany pictured in one of the responses above).

For everything in between, I love my Ecco High tops (2 different styles, in black and in white) and my Born side zip low sneakers. They have arch support, resilient, bouncy soles, and just enough breathability. I have Clark's sneakers that look great but make my feet hot quickly. The born sneakers are now on sale at Nordstrom.

I will take the Borns and the black Eccos with me next month when the Boy and I roam bits of the Baltic. The boots would better on cobblestones but I think they will be too warm.

I have pretty much given up wearing regular shoes and usually go barefoot or wear sneakers. My sneakers of choice are Nike because they fit my foot the best. I wear cross trainers when I work out and runners for outside walking and running errands. When I need a casual walking shoe I love "Grasshoppers". When I need something a bit more dressy or somewhat casual I love Bare Traps because they fit my foot like a glove and are comfortable for walking and standing.

I am enjoying reading this post. I love walking but live in southern california where everyone drives. A really bad day is 3,000 steps and a good day is 10,000. However, I walk 3 times as much when I travel. I really like seeing everyone's shoes and responses. When I select "walking shoes" its more with travel in mind. Here are the one's that work for me. Also, I recently took the plunge and purchased the eco 7 soft sneaker and am enjoying it tremendously.

I've been wearing Reebok Club C85s on my daily walking commute (7km round trip) for the last six months: http://https//www.reebok.ca/en....._id=CN0905

I really love them, although they're starting to get a bit smelly from all of the wear they get. If anyone has tips for how to deal with that safely, let me know.

I could walk forever in the Naturalizer Blair booties. So glad I duplicated them. Strangely enough, the white leather is more comfortable than the black leather, as I have both.

I'm not sure that I've ever owned a pair of shoes that doesn't start hurting after about 2-3 miles, and I've tried everything under the sun, including orthotics. When doing extensive walking, I'm usually wearing running shoes chosen with guidance from the staff at a serious running shoe store, but even those hurt eventually. So I'm wildly envious of those of you who can wear nice-looking shoes for miles. Somewhat surprisingly, these two pairs of ankle boots may be my best bets at present. The Rieker ones (home photo in Finds) initially made me miserable, but I persevered and after about three years they wore in well. The Eccos were comfortable from the start, so long as I wear orthotics.

I walk a lot. I don't really keep track of my steps. I have a hiking trail in front of my house that is quite steep and challenging. I also try to walk around town as much as possible.
Name a foot problem and I probably have it. I don't wear orthotics. They made my feet scream in pain. For serious walking, I wear New Balance and Finn Comfort. My El Naturalista Chelsea Boots are pretty amazing too. All of these have cushioning, great support and a built-in orthotic that molds to your foot. Well, I put a Birks insert in the New Balance ones.

Here goes.

1. My two pairs of Think! Aida shoes--the d'Orsay style, in gray below, and the sling-back style, in black--have been wonderful. The gray ones especially, because they are newer. They took me all over Paris the summer of a heat wave there.

2. The Mephisto Yael sneaker, shown below in black and white with snake print. These were the other pair of shoes I wore all over Paris in the heat wave. They are frequent travelers with me.

3. Naot Kedma oxfords. I no longer wear these, because I've moved on to other styles. But they were super comfortable for lots of city walking. I still look for other Naots with the same footbed. (You can research the types here, on the Naot website; all the shoes in the same collection should fit the same.)

4. Mephisto Sabatinas are my latest comfy oxfords. I will say they aren't s perfect a fit on my feet as the Naots were, but these are still very comfy and excellent for walking.

5. Mephisto Korie flat is one of my newest sneakers. I think they might be made on the same last as the Yael. They were very comfy right out of the box.

6. Blondo Vinita moto boot. They have zero arch support, so I like to wear them with SuperFeet 3/4 inserts. They will go the distance, AND they are waterproof. They have traveled New York City with me more than once. I bought the . . .

7. Born ROA bootie as an update to the Blondo moto bootie, but the Borns aren't waterproof, so I still wear the Blondos when I need protection from water.

8. Blondo Volley tall boot. More comfortable footbed than the Vinita, so I don't have to use the SuperFeet, although sometimes I do use them. These boots are comfy and warm enough for wet weather.

9. Munro Bradley is a great, casual walking bootie. I bought these to replace my Born Troye, which were great long-distance city walkers, but which had just gotten too beat-up looking for my style.

10. Jo Ghost lace-up booties are great for walking, because they conformed to my feet and feel like they were made for me. They don't have a lot of inner support, but somehow they just work.

11. Cole Haan Grand Pro tennis shoe is a recent addition to my sneaker capsule. Love them. They are so light! They don't have a ton of support, but they have it just where I need it, and I love that the insole is fabric-covered, so you can wear them without socks, and your feet don't stick to the insoles.

12. Converse Chuck Taylor All Star Platform sneakers in gold joined my sneaker capsule the same day as the Cole Haans. I thought these would be mainly for looks--not an all-day walker. But wow, they are giving the "comfort" shoes a run for their money. Surprisingly good for walking. I haven't tested them for very long distance, and frankly, on a trip, I'd probably grab the Cole Haans first.

I'm sorry to say I don't have a sandal recommendation for walking lots of distance! My Think! options have to fill that role for now.

Total non sports footwear = 11 pair. 3 pair are Converse low top canvas sneakers. They are the shoes that I've reached for the most this past year and what I wear when I go for walks. More important than the shoe though, is the insert. I use a 'hard' insert by Superfeet, a gel insert from Dr. Scholl, and a hybrid gel insert with a rigid arch support.

I don't track steps, but I've used my Garmin to track walks DH and I take 2-3 times a week. We stop at the library, and for coffee and a treat afterwards, but still manage 7-10km. I've worn my Nine West loafers (kitted out with gel inserts) for a 12 hour shopping day in the big city - tired feet and legs, but no injuries!

Shoes with a rubber sole or heel seem to be better at traction and shock absorption than leather or other hard materials. The loafers have a veneer of rubber that makes all the difference.
