My new Eddie Bauer MacKenzie trench is my new favorite thing! It has all the weather-resistant features of gear, but the cut and color are subtle enough to work with dressier outfits. I got the dark smoke, which is nice, but also liked the mushroom when I saw it in the store. Available in petites, too, so the sleeves aren't ridiculously long on me. I should note that I am pear shaped, and often between a small and medium for that reason, but the small fit fine. And it's on sale right now!

I've also seen great reviews of Eddie Bauer's Girl on the Go trench. It's a bit more casual, but also a little longer, which might matter to you if you're out in the rain a lot.

I have one by Calvin Klein, and it looks like the one Sarah posted. (But I don't look as chic in it!) I got it last year at Nordstrom, and it came in several colors.

Umm, my arm holding a file folder or magazine over my head while dashing to the car? or if I've actually remembered to bring an umbrella, that's it for me! Just teasing. Although I love Seatlle and Vancouver, I am quite glad I'm not dealing with rain :)

If you are interested in something more casual, perhaps an unstructured anorak style like mine? It obviously has no waist definition, so maybe no good if that's one of the things you like about your lovely trench.

Mine is from the French brand Areline, and it's sort of modelled after a trench, but more fluid and relaxed. A coat like this is designed to be roomy, so you can even though it's not warm you can layer up underneath it.

And it has a big hood. I live in a city where umbrellas get blown inside out, so it's all about the hood!

Joy - I really like the white on you. It gives a simple coat pizzaz.
Diana - I like that trench. It's shorter than mine. I, too, have several gear coats, and find them convenient.
ma342 - classic! Bummer about the buttons.
Linda - Yours is similar to mine, but I like how it doesn't look bulky like mine does
greycat6 - I agree about a raincoat needing to cover your bum, but I always remove the hoods if I can. I'm not sure why, as I rarely carry an umbrella, but perhaps it feels too bulky to me. I will check out the Laundry coats. BTW, I was in South Lake Union in the sideways rain this morning. There was standing water (and rivers) everywhere. Perhaps I should ask about rain boots on my next post! Regarding NF, I like the style of their trenches, but not the branding.

I will be watching this thread closely as I also need a new MOTG raincoat this year. What are your criteria? For me, it has to have a hood and cover my bum when I sit down. Not too gearish, preferably with some waist definition. Would be GREAT if I could find a lined version to wear when it gets below 50 degrees.

Have you looked at Laundry by Shelli Segal raincoats? They are light weight and more fashion than gear. I have one which has been going strong for 4 years. I wear a Marmot vest underneath mine on days like today. (I also live in Seattle and it is raining sideways right now). My last Laundry coat came from BlueFly.com so it was a good deal.

Would love a North Face trench coat that was lined. Alas, the SA in the local store told me the NF women's trenches are seasonal and come out in the spring and are not lined. Seems like an opportunity for NF for those of us in the PNW.

bettycrocker, that's interesting about metal buttons. I think mine are just plastic with a metallic finish, but I'll check.

Here in Maryland, a raincoat is an essential wardrobe item. I recently purchased the one below, with a slight difference, and that is the buttons are a shiny silver. I purchased the black. The things I like about it are: it is single breasted, it has a removable hood and lining, and the length looks good over skirts and dresses as well as pants. On the whole, I'm pretty happy with it.

Are they metal buttons? If so, I'm not surprised. That happens a lot with metal buttons. You need to find some strong thread or something to sew them back on with - something that won't be cut by the metal.

I have two water-resistant trenches. A classic styled black one with gold hardware (pictured below), and a lighter weight navy one with a fuller skirt, which is quite old. The navy has lost some of its water resistance by now but I have some waterproofing spray from LL Bean that helps.

ETA: I also have a gear rain jacket that is completely waterproof and super lightweight (like you can roll it into a tiny ball and stuff it in the bottom of your purse). It's not warm so is good for summer storms and stuff. It's similar to this one:

I have a casual life style and am using this one from REI bought last spring. I think it is REI brand. I am traveling and don't have it with me
This one works in rain and has a detachable hood,

I need a new raincoat this year. I've lost some weight, and my black Burberry trench is too big. I still wear it, but I'd like something for everyday (I live in Seattle, so it will be used almost everyday!) that I feel fabulous in. I'm open to a trench style, but I'm also wondering if I should consider something less conservative, since as a MOTG, my style is more casual.

What are you wearing? Does it work for you?

I'm about to go to a spin class and then to run errands, so I'll be offline for the morning.

Thanks in advance!
