I don't have a burberry (one day!) but for my other trench coats I try to go for a fit that will accomodate either a blazer or a medium-weight sweater. That's usually what I wear under my wool coats too in any case. My underlayers (blouse, tee, cami, etc) are either fitted or thin and don't add much bulk. Many of my blazers do have shoulder pads so I make sure to try the coat with a shoulder padded blazer to make sure it will fit. If I get a size that fits my hips I usually have plenty of room up top; I do have problems sometimes with the bicep area being too tight with the layers so I pay attention to that as well.

At the last YLF meetup, Jeanne and I tried on a bunch of Burberrys at a fancy consignment store. The sizing was all over the place (maybe because they were different styles, some older) but we both felt like they ran pretty large. I think the newer, more fitted styles might run smaller. Oh! And make sure you know whether it's US or UK sizing. UK sizing runs around 2 sizes smaller (so I wear a 12UK, which is 8US).

I'm living my dreams through you, Elle I'm very happy for you that you have money from "nowhere" and can make a real investment. I've tried a Burberry trench once and the fit and quality was amazing, but too expensive. Have you considered one of those trenches with a layer inside that can be removed? It could fit you well and you didn't have to layer as much yourself

Your burberry is gorgeous Caro. I have a zara trench and I just like it to fit a shirt and cradigan underneath. nothing more because in sydney its more about the wind and rain than the temperature. And if its unusaly cold I wear a woolly coat.
I tried on a burberry once and it was fab. very nice details. I'd love one. Those shiny metallic ones they have are delicious, but would date.

Rae I've only just started to buy XS & 2 in jackets since I lost weight but you always have been that size. Anyway if you prefer 6 in Burberry then maybe I should too. The 4 in the classic fit Kensington allows layers more comfortably than the 4 in slimfit Newforest or Queenshouse where I need a 6 for layers or 4 without. I'm wondering whether to get roomier style in 4 or fitted style in 6 or fitted style in 4 & wear with only 2 thin layers. The Kensington 4 has roomier body while maintaining shoulder seams for a 4. I hear how everyone loves the way their Burberry fits which is one reason they think it is worth the price. I can see other reasons but for that price I want to look like those models.

When I tried on Burberry trenches (my godfather wanted to buy me one) in HK, they said that they can tailor them to fit you if you find that you're between sizes or if you want that slim fit you see on the celebs.

I guess if you're a celeb you can have a looser one for layers, and a tighter one for no layers? :p

I prefer a slim fit myself, and I buy my trench coats pretty small and tight - I take of my blazer when I have to wear one.

That being said, I didn't get the Burberry. It's too expensive for me right now (or him!)

Hm, maybe they do. Or maybe they are clipped for the photo shoots? I had no idea I wore smaller jackets than you, always thought you were smaller than me! I can dig up the pics I took, but I wont be home for over a week. :T

Claire it fits well if I don't allow for cami plus sweater plus blazer & then try to button all the way up. I think maybe I should try cami plus sweater or blazer.

Rae maybe I'm wanting it too fitted because I prefer the 4 in the slim fit but you usually buy smaller jackets than me. Look at the Burberry models & celebs though. Maybe they get theirs altered to fit them.

I actually did research one recently. A water resistant cotton kind with a slim fit. I preferred the look with an underlayer and cashmere sweater which is as thick as I layer under my wool coats, too. I wouldn't say it was a size up, though. The 4 didn't fit my bust and the six looked good both with and without layers.

Gorgeous!! Caro, I think this is where the classic cut of a Burberry coat comes into play. It may be several years old and not the "current" fit, but it still looks amazing! I'd keep it exactly as is!

I did drool over the shiny metallic Burberry trench coats earlier this season, but I don't think I could justify one as I rarely need a coat here.

Enjoy your special purchase, Elle!

I like the way caro has wrapped hers instead of buttoning it to get a closer fit without layers. A very stylish approach. Also remember that layers work best when there's a little air space in between them. Or maybe I couldn't feel my hands last winter because my sweater sleeves made my moto really, really tight on the arms, lol!

side note: Do you mean to tell me that when one *finally* gets to go try on the luxury coat they've been dreaming about, the fit is not all one hoped it would be? This is most distressing to my daydreams. :/

Wow Caro. Is that Burberry? You can see the good quality whatever it is! Or is that me justifying a Burberry for myself. No it does look really good. Maybe you could get it altered instead of purging, if the YLFers say fit is dated.

Probably not helpful as I've had mine for ages & bought it when the ideal fit was looser & longer. I've pulled it out again for this winter & need to do a keep or not post. It was bought to fit over winter suit jackets. The only shots I have are from the movie poster challenge.

I was thinking maybe I need to try it with layers not buttoned all the way to the throat. I did that with all layers to check fit & it was snug in better fitted coats. I figured if cold or rainy I might need to button all the way but maybe not. Maybe a scarf & umbrella take care of that area. Kim Kardashian has a fitted one & doesn't button that part due to her large bust I think.

Both my trenches layer well over a lightweight jacket/blazer or heavy sweater. Layering under a trench depends on the roominess of the underarm area. One of my trenches has raglan sleeves and this is by far the easier of the 2 to layer under, and it doesn't compete with the shoulder line of a jacket worn underneath.

I got some birthday money & returned some new with tags items I didn't love & sold some things I don't wear & decided with my girl math that all that money came from nowhere, outside of normal budget, so I justified a Burberry trench.

I want to know how they should fit. I want mine to look good with & without layers. I'm having trouble making that happen with the ones I have tried on.

I have read other posts on here including Angie's ones on how to fit a coat & pics of Angie in her trenches. Hers look perfect. Not too big. They look too baggy on me without layers if I get them to fit layers. How many layers should a trench fit? If it is really cold you would just wear your wool coat right? I guess I want to wear some layers because I am buying a rainproof one. It could be cold & wet at the same time.

Pics of Burberry models & celebs show a much better fit than I am able to achieve. Maybe I should just try to fit lighter layers, not the most I think I would wear.
