Sunita, thanks, I'll keep my eyes open.

A, now that I can wear Cleo's sizes, I'll have a look there too. I am busy discovering a host of new retailers too.

Angie, here's to enjoying being petite. :o) I've never minded being short, myself. No matter what size or shape you are, there are things that work and things that don't. And the things that don't, sometimes do if you tweak the right details. And that's why I'm here, so I can figure those things out again. Thanks for all the help and encouragement!

Angie, you're an angel! Thank you for the encouragement, the examples and the reminder!

I've been guilty of imposing a whole slateful of restrictions on myself because of being 4'10" --- but somewhere down the line, I (thankfully!) just got bored enough and rebellious enough to decide I would wear what I thought I looked good or felt comfy in even if I didn't look T-A-L-L in it! Yes, I need to work on keeping the silhouette streamlined sometimes, but mostly, I don't say 'it won't work because I'm too short' anymore --- SO freeing!

Also, a salute from a former 2-incher and now mostly flats-wearing gal.

Wow. Thank you, Angie. Honestly, the pictorials of your three clients did much more to sell these looks to 5'3" me than what you see typically, an extremely tall model. I can't relate to that look at all (in terms of thinking it might work for me)... There should be room for images of shorter women stylishly wearing the clothes manufacturers want to sell to us!

I'm 5'1" and love flats. I might let my height keep me away from boyfriend jeans--my short legs are a proportion issue--but overall, I like my height or lack thereof.

Thank you, Angie! Not really petite at 5' 4" (like Rae) but also always conscious of proportion. And, opposite to your clients, I weirdly find that shopping in the petites department (where it exists) can often be better for me - at least for jackets, button downs, and dresses. I guess that's because I'm short waisted.

I agree that size (in either direction) should be no barrier to style!! Just bought a new midi skirt today!

Here where I live, the so-called petite departments carry a very small inventory of "old women tourists from Florida" clothing that I refuse to wear. I call it that because I grew up in Florida and know from whence I speak.

Because of this, I shop online where the selection is much better. If the department stores ever want me to darken their doors again, they need to listen up. My message to retailers is:

There are plenty of petite women in the U.S. and all over the world who want to wear stylish clothing. The stuff you're displaying at the local malls is not stylish. I'd love to be able to go in a dressing room and try the clothing on before buying it; but, alas, there's nothing at the mall that I even want to take to the dressing room, much less try on.

For some idiotic reason, the very same department stores who have practically non-existent petite departments at the mall have a wide assortment of petite clothing on their websites. So, like it or not, I have to order my clothing online and hope it fits.

Hooray, petites! I eek into "average" height at 5'4", but I still feel very conscious of leg length and body width because of my stature. It is so nice to file away stylish, flattering outfits to copy without having to re-calculate and re-imagine how the look will change after removing 6" heels and another 4" of leg. I very much enjoy viewing outfits on tall, leggy, heeled models, too, but it's so much easier to envision on gals closer to my size.

Sunita, no, I've rarely ordered anything, even from within Canada. I will slowly venture out in that area in the future, but I'll probably start with Canadian companies, to keep the complexities down. Thanks for the suggestion though. Do they have retail outlets? I do get down to the States now and again. I'm not the most fashion forward person - classic would suit me just fine, especially in coats.

Angie, I've been very happily surprised in recent years to see how much more is available for petites. It was a blissful day when I bought my first pair of pants that didn't have to be hemmed, let me tell you. The coats, at least at a reasonable price point, just seem to be lagging behind. Hopefully the selection will continue to widen. I've never been a standard size and shape, and have been settling for ill-fitting for way too long.

Thanks for the boost, Angie!

It probably seems like I whine all the time about being petite, but actually I'm very comfortable with my stature and I agree with you that it's certainly not an obstacle to style. Being small is part of my identity. What I'm really whining about is the frustration of, time after time, finding awesome clothes that do not fit my body! But in this frustration, petite women are not alone -- if you're tall, plus-size, full-busted, etc, you've got similar problems. :-)

I also agree with you about manipulating the variables to make a look work on a petite frame. At first I thought I wouldn't be able to do the midi skirt because it would make me look stumpy. Well, it turns out that if I keep the length to not too far below my knee, and I wear the right shoes, both narrow and full midi skirts can look great!

JR: Have you looked at Land's End for coats & blazers? Their stuff isn't terribly cutting-edge, but they make good quality stuff, have decent petite options, and ship to Canada.

I bought a nice magenta wool swing coat there, and it's still going strong 4-5 years later. I'm pretty sure others here have tried & liked their puffer coats.

If you sign up for their e-mails, they often have great deals (their free shipping deals may only apply to the US though).

:0) @ JR!

I know we always want more stuff to fit us straight off the rack ladies, but I have to really stick up for US retail here. It's the country that gives petites it's own department and the widest assortment. Nowhere in the world is the petite more looked after than in US retail.

:o)

I just wish manufacturers would make more coats and blazers in petite sizes, especially when there is cuff detailing. Even Reitman's, which has a great petite section, doesn't carry petite coats. I'm afraid I can't buy the really high-end stuff, just don't have that kind of budget.

Thanks for the boost Angie...ha, ha! It can be harder to find styles and sizes that work for petites. A good tailor helps. Plus a certain je ne sais quoi attitude to carry it all off.
