My niece's wedding is in mid-August at an arboretum in a US middlewestern city. Activities are both inside and out. My own family knows I ALWAYS wear a hat outdoors...partly a habit from living in the Rocky Mountains where the sun is very strong. But I also enjoy wearing hats and have them for all weathers and most situations from hiking to a yearly tea at a grand hotel. </p> <p> I plan to wear a teal cotton eyelet dress and a natural straw cloche with a narrow white band . It has a wider brim than many cloches but is unlikely to impede anyone's vision. </p> <p> Perhaps I'll be the only one with a hat but I am hoping it will just add mildly to the festive atmosphere. At a very small courthouse wedding where the bride is in street clothes a sole hat might be more of a statement but if a bride, even one as self-effacing as my niece, is in a traditional white dress it is hard to upstage her.
