I know it seems like it could help to see the IRL looks, and I so appreciate that and am not trying to be coy at all, but I'll have to stick with just working on the outfits. Reasons could be (a) You can hardly see an outfit under coat and accouterments (b) Tools of the trade belong where they belong (c) I'm delusional and have never left my cabin in Kennebunkport (d) All of the above.

Unfrumped, you made me spit my tea out with the Kennebunkport comment! So funny -- and so easy to fall into, I know! But you are far away from that here. I really like both these skirts and think you wear the length well, even with flats, and I also prefer them with a tucked top.

You can get the same effect with the sweaters by "faux" tucking with a belt at the waist, or even (sometimes) just by folding them under at the front and letting them drape at the sides. This is a trick I tried in the summer and with knits it works surprisingly well. (I thought it would lead to endless fiddling, but it seemed to stay put pretty well and didn't bother me. Who knew?)

You could go with a shoe that bookends your hair (like the darker footwear or a dark taupe or grey) or you can go with a nude type shoe and nude hose.

And Claire has a fabulous idea! Let's see some of these outfits with the coat, since that is so often a worry! I'll bet with your fab style you can start a pinterest trend in lab coats!

My pleasure! Ya know, I would love to see your lab coat, since that's the way all of these outfits come together at work. Do you think you could bring one home sometime and show us? I wouldn't be above having one tailored to fit exactly if I lived in one everyday.

Adelfa, thanks for your comments! I think I will play SYC some more before making the final decision. I would like to see how “effortless” it is to utilize it.

clearlyclaire, I know, I envision waking up to loons calling. I love your outfits and how you are so willing to analyze what’s working. Shoes are the Achilles heel, no pun intended. I think that's why I've tended to stick with the "uniform" of short pencil skirt--to my eye, it's more tolerant of flats, proportion-wise.

Angie, thank you for your votes! I will also do some more rummaging through more tops to see what other options I have.

Wendi, that is a great thought that also makes me want to think about good skirt colors to target. I do find black flats with “nude” legs very jarring on me (don’t have the same problem with dressy pumps), This skirt can be worn with opaque tights, and I think it’s a bit frumpier with the dark sheer hose, for some reason. When I wear shoes in mid-tones, or my nude ballet flats, I feel less librarian-esque. That might mean that with a longer skirt especially, I might want to get a color that is more medium so that the whole leg line is more tonal.

I like both skirts! Have you tried a lighter or even nude flat with the longer skirt?

I think you look fantastic in both skirts. Definitely keep the midi length with a tucked top. I like #4 best of the lot.

Oh Unfrumped, you crack me up! I could really relate to your comments, as I have the ability to look "Kennebunkport" in a nano-second. I also need to wear flats. So what is it about skirts in general? Do we always have to wear super trendy tops and stilettos to make them work? One observation: you are not going to ever look like a tramp in a tighter skirt, so just put that thought out of your head.

Now that we have that out of the way, I love the first skirt, full stop. The second one really appeals to me too. It has a trim 40's military vibe to me. Something about the belt in pic. 4 looks a tiny bit L.L.Bean to me (which I actually have a secret, preppy love for). If you keep this one, I wouldn't shorten it right away. I like the length. That said, there is something undoubtedly current about the knit tube skirts. Wow, I'm just a great big help this morning. Let's see what everyone else says!

Great leopard skirt!

The second is a nice skirt and you look great in it. I like it best in #6. Somehow the tucking with the belt looks less modern to me. I would love to see you in a midi that's even longer. I'm wondering if that would look more intentional with respect to the current styles.

Ann Taylor sale led me to try on some pencil skirts.

Skirt #1 (pic 1-3) is a keeper—I think it’s called leopard, but it’s more abstract so to me it evokes a floral pattern. It’s a “happy” skirt. Have some other top options to try.

Skirt #2 (pic 4-6) is the question: I have wanted to try a longer or tube-like length but usually can’t get flattering fit in those. This fabric, a nubby wool-cotton blend, is more forgiving somehow, so I’m getting a better vibe. But, I have length problems and questions.

On one hand, I like the longer length, thinking it’s more current and can look sort of ‘40’s/elegant, and at sale price I can dabble in that. OTOH, it can read as Kennebunkport in a hurry, on me at least, especially with flats. I think it calls for a very short top proportion, and even then, since I am long-waisted, the proportions may be off. I don’t have the right boxy short/cropped sweater—I think I would want short boxy without a welt so it just skims the skirt top. Tucking in thin knits is another solution (as shown with the JC merino sweater) but is more fussy to do the belting.

I also tried on the 6P size—it is the perfect “normal” knee length on me, but is more body con than this one –looks “good” but might be too knit-tight for what I want for work. So if I want this skirt but shorter, I would probably have to hem the size 4 regular.

So, fabbers, here’s what I’m noodling on: try #2 for a “midi” style? (Caution: may lead to buying items just to go with it).Buy #2, but hem to more classic length for my usual "formula" ? Start out midi, and then chop it off when I realize I look like a frump? Or pass because I’ll get frustrated trying to style it. Or, this is not the right tubey/midi yet.
