This is an old-fashioned mindset, to think black is a bad or unflattering fashion color. Black used to be reserved for mourning and I think that with very old people, that opinion remains. It probably came from their Victorian or Edwardian-era parents.

I also think it's hilarious how old ladies wear these bright pink pantsuits etc. and feel like it is making them look more youthful. NOT.

I also think one wears black for reasons other than pure face flattery and they are JUST AS VALID. An all or mostly black outfit lets you focus on the architecture and shape of your garments; it is great for travelling; it can be edgy; it is very slimming; it is minimal; and, it lets you be in the background. Honestly sometimes it drives me crazy that flattery is like the "only" valid aspect of fashion! Here I am thinking of someone like Anna who is achieving something interesting, fun and conceptual yet doesn't always get the forum love she deserves because she is not afraid to push the envelope of conventional flattery.

OK and here's what everyone knows: all black, next to the face, can be less flattering than *some* colors. My advice is to wear a bit more make up, especially lipstick, and to have other colored accent pieces. Even if your clutch is bright white or red, the addition of color somewhere on your body makes for a more flattering look. I am sure you know all of this but it feels good to repeat it because then I am validating my own love of black (and I do NOT have the complexion nor hair color to pull off black like you do).

The other trick to wearing all black is to change your hair color: platinum blonde, red, and jet black all look amazing with black. In fact I've been wanting to go very light just so I can pull off more all-black outfits a la Odyssey Home.

/RANT OVER!

You wear black with aplomb. But people get lynched for wearing too much black in some communities, quite seriously. Sophistication is not always appreciated and not completely without reason, thugs notwithstanding. I would and do think about how much black I wear.

I have not read all the comments, so my apologies if I'm repeating...

I have had the exact same experience, only not my MIL, a good friend. I love black, it's my "comfort colour" and I can wear it. But when I started taking daily photos of my outfits, something really struck me... I wear too much black. This is not to say that I shouldn't, but that I do. My friend said it from the perspective that I also look good in colour, and in white, so I should embrace them a bit more than I do. And I agree with her - so I'm trying hard to incorporate them more, just to add variety. Your MIL could be coming from the same place.

I love the way you dress, and certainly hadn't noticed this myself. But sometimes you don't notice it when you see one outfit at a time. Looking at a whole folder of outfits tell a different story.

You wear tons of colour, and you look awesome in black! I do not, so I am avoiding black. But if I looked the way YOU do in black, it would certainly be my neutral of choice. It's figure flattering and always available, yet (unlike SSB) can make a statement when worn right - which you do!
PS I am waiting to see you in the black cleo tiered dress, if you picked it up on sale last week

You wear black to perfection (a lot of envy here). If you wear black because you are afraid on the colors or because you think it is safe and goes with everything then yes, MIL is right. But somehow I don't think it is the case. You wear a lot of colors and mix them fearlessly. I think it is perfectly alright to wear black (or other neutral) when mood strikes you if you do it stylishly.
And if it seems to much just add some white or cream...:-)

You look great in black! My only comment though is to reevaluate over time because supposedly black can look harsh when you start aging. But that's probably very individual dependent.

You look great in black and also wear plenty of color. Remember that older people may not see color the same way that you do, especially if they have any cataracts. She may be seeing "black" that isn't black. Once my dad's eye doctor let me look through some instrument that was like looking through his lenses. Yikes! And he only had mild cataracts. Everything was definitely darker and orangey.

As a younger woman I did wear a lot of black, all of the time, almost, and I looked pretty good in it. But. as I got to middle age and still had the reddish brown dyed hair, I realized that I was just another woman who looked exactly like every other one, who wore black with the idea that it was slimming, if no longer all that flattering.
I made a concerted effort to stop buying so much and really try for other colors, specifically browns and greens because they looked good with my coloring.
Then I let my hair go to it's natural gray and discovered that, AGAIN, helz yes, I do look good in black. I am also making sure that I wear lots of colors that are happy and flattering.
Short story long, Shannon. black looks great with your coloring and hair, you mix it up with lots of other bright and saturated colors and you always look terrific. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I've never noticed an over-use of black in your wardrobe either. I agree that you do color beautifully but the black is a great neutral for you and it grounds your colors and provides a great backdrop for your fab accessories.

IK - you totally made me laugh with your comment!

Alright then, I will continue to wear black because I genuinely like the colour and I think I wear it reasonably well. VC, I suspect you're right - it's "old fashion advice" that's in her head and she herself never wears black (terrible colour for her) so probably has that running through her mind as well.

She never meant it in a mean way BTW - just commenting.

Well, it was winter, and black is one of your main neutrals. It works, you feel great in it, no need to change that I see. Your MIL will likely be happy as Spring springs and you use more color.

It has never crossed my mind that you wear too much black, or much black in general. To me, it seems like your outfits always incorporate colors in one way or the other. I also think black is a great neutral for you. Forget this, and keep on doing what you do when you create outfits. You're so. very. good. at it!

I don't see any issues with wearing too much black. I do wear lots of black especially in winter and I don't see that changing anytime soon. The neutral suits you and your coloring.
