Fashintern - LOL - how on earth did that end up as Bidungsroman??? I have no idea what I typed. You made me burst out laughing. If I want to change my user name, I am keeping that one as an option (Bijou is after my dog, I could pretend to be an Australian with German heritage).

Vildy, it is great that you like it both ways. I do think it will definitely work as a shorter dress, so this is likely how it will end up.

Brooklyn, thanks for your feedback. I am planning to wear it as a maxi initially, it will be a fun Christmas dress. However, if Ifind it hard to wear as a maxi, then I will give it the chop.

I like it very much as it is BUT Angie's right that the shorter version is a total WoW, Very nice combination of innocence (the check) and sexiness. Shorter gives the flounces attitude.

L’Abielle thanks for your comments. It is good to know that if the maxi is not working for me, I can convert the dress to a shorter version. You do make a very good point about air-con in summer.

This dress is a win-win for you because you look stunning in it at both lengths. The original length on you looks as if it's meant to be worn at that length, whereas the model looks like she's making do with an above-ankle length because the dress is too short for her (spoken as another tallish person).

The two-tier version also works -- in fact you look amazing in it. Rarely can layered tiers look so perfect in both iterations.

So my suggestion is to wear it as a maxi, for fun and novelty, until you get bored with it, then give it the chop knowing it will still look super. (I chopped off a tiered maxi sun dress remotely and the chopped version rarely got any wear.)

Btw summer maxis are great in air conditioning.

Mm. I was thinking of shortening the top two as “cosmetic” only because, as you say in the original post, they get progressively longer, and taking length off the bottom one and leaving the others as they are would take that away.
Enjoy your maxi a couple times, and then your “new” sundress.

Hi FashIntern, the frills sit on a layer, so if I shortened the top two frills, it would make no difference to the bottom tier. My weather is still too cold to wear this dress, so I have not done anything with it yet. I think I will wear it one or two times as a maxi dress and then have it shortened. Looking at the photos, I like the dress shorter on me because as you say, such a bold dress, it overwhelm me. In addition, whilst it is still too cold for this dress, come Mid December to the end of March, it will be extremely hot and this dress shortened, will be far cooler to wear.

Thanks for your post!

You will keep us posted on changes you make to it, right?
It’s cute as a 2-tier sundress, but that’s not as unique as the swooshiness of wearing it long. On first glance, I really did see the dress and had to look for you, so I’m for altering all three tiers. Why do you say you’d have to restructure the whole thing to do that? It looks like you could just hem each one a little shorter.

Texstyle - I am so glad that there are people preferring the shorter version because if/when I do this, at least I won't feel like I have ruined the dress, just morphed it into something different.

Deb - you are in the majority and I am pleased that the long version is liked.

Sara L - this may be the best option, to bite the bullet and get it altered so it fits as it was designed. The only draw back is the cost, so I will have to ponder whether it is worth the considerable cost of a remodel of the skirt.

Thank you for your input.

I would leave it long but hemmed. I like the three tiers but I think you should hem it shorter. I would see if you could hem all three tiers so it wouldn't look off-balanced. If you decide to hack the bottom layer off, I think the dress is cute, just not quite as dramatic as the three tier version.

Lynn - when I first put on the dress I thought it was overwhelming too. I think I will convert it to a sundress after a few wears as a maxi.

Angie - smiling- this is why you are the expert.

Diana - I am glad you think the maxi look could work.

I just thought of something: what if you could make the dress convertible from sundress to maxi? I think it could be done with buttons, snaps or a zipper, maybe. It’s something to think about, anyway.

Mia Blue - Chopping really does change the dress, thank you for your thoughts.

The Cat - I think you are right, the shorter dress is able to be more casual, a sundress that I can wear as casually as walking my dogs, the longer version good for summer night BBQs with friends. Thank you for chiming in, as I always appreciate your insights.

I thought chopping would spoil the proportions, but this dress actually looks GORGEOUS on you in both versions, so I can't decide. The long version would be fun for a party, but you might get more wear out of the shorter version.

Cindy Smith and SarahD - potentially I could get the skirt resized, but I do think that is a big alteration and would probably cost double the price I paid for the dress. It is a shame that my sewing skills are limited, so any alteration would need to be done professionally.

Isabel - it is a nice dress and I currently don’t own any maxi dresses, so maybe inadvertently I now have got my maxi dress.

Efbgen and Anne, you both make a good point about the chopped version being cooler to wear in the summer heat. Whilst the bodice of the dress is fitted, the skirt is more A-line and roomy, so I could wear it on hot days, maybe not on 40C plus days. Luckily, we only get a handful of those each summer.

Barbara Diane, finally someone on team hack!

Karen13 - the dilemma of the maxi! I think your strategy is a sound one. Try it as a maxi and if I am not wearing it, convert to a sun dress.

Rachy, thanks for chiming in.

Angie, now you throwing a spanned in the works. Initially I was undecided, then going to keep as a maxi and now I am uncertain again. Given my climate, the sundress option is the most wearable. Glad you like the hacked version, because I think eventually this is what I will end up doing with the dress.
Thanks for commenting on the new maxi skirt, the asymmetrical hem and side split, only up to my knees, makes all the difference in wearability and gives this skirt a nice swoosh factor when I walk.

Katerina, great tip on the belt and glad you like the dress in both forms.

Cardiff Girl, this dress is quite different from others I own and I hope it woks at the longer length, at least I have an option if it languishes unworn in my closet.

Marilyn, another team hack member, you are definitely in good company. You are absolutely right that the details are what can make or break an item in terms of whether it works or not.

Sal, you are wise and I think this is what I will do. Wear it as a maxi a few times, just for fun and to summer Christmas parties and then hack it in February when the weather gets incredibly hot and I am thoroughly over the hot weather.

I like it long (unabashed maxi fan!). I agree the in-between is not worth it. It is fun short but even more fun long. I would definitely give it a whirl long for a couple of wears and then chop if you don't feel right....

I'm on team hack as well. Love pics 4 and 5. I think you'll get more wear from it that way.

Love the maxi skirt! The asymmetrical hem is fantastic. It's all in the details.

FWIW, I like it the best as is in the maxi length and probably more without the belt. The shortest version is cute, but it is an entirely different dress then. You look beautiful in both, Bijou.

I'm 100% on Team Hack. GORGEOUS shorter, and you have the climate. You wear it better than Mary.

Bijou, the maxi skirt is KILLER at that length because of the asymmetrical hem. You look SUBLIME.
