Hi BrieN,

It actually is long enough to put into a ponytail/pigtails. I can braid it as well, but it's (understandably) a very short braid.

But I'm still going with the plan to grow it out until September/October and then get it cut and donate the longer hair. Even if I did get it cut into a pixie cut now, some of the hair would still have the dyed highlights on the tips, which I think would actually look worse than if I just left it, like I am planning on doing. Hopefully there should be a few more inches of natural hair after September, because I am planning on going for a longer pixie cut than the style that I used to go for (which was basically just Ginnifer Goodwin's pixie from season 1 of Once Upon A Time).

Hi Sarah! Glad you were able to add photos! You have such lovely features, wow. It sounds like you are set on donating your hair, so my thoughts are in that vein.

It sounds to me like you are in the "tough" middle of the grow out phase where you've got neither the positives of the short hairdo nor the positives of a longer 'do. My suggestion would be to not cut the back right now (not even the highlights) until you get some length so you can pull your hair back into a pony tail (or pigtails). I would also suggest for your consideration getting your bangs/fringe cut as that will make it easier to keep the hair out of your eyes and they can also frame your face a bit like your pixie did.

Welcome, Sarah!

You are so lucky to be able to wear your hair at any length. I can see from your pictures that a pixie will suit you beautifully, and it sounds as if your hair grows really quickly - lucky you! I'd go ahead with your plan to crop it short when it's long enough to donate. That is a lovely gesture, by the way, and the best incentive for going for the chop. Good luck, and keep us posted.

It sounds like you need to sit down and give yourself the time to experiment with your length. Ponytails are the obvious, easy way to wear it but it isn't really. You need to find products that will suit you, and maybe a fresher cut - not short, just trimmed. Maybe your stylist needs to shape it straight, blunt blob (long bob) style. Or you need bangs and layers in the front to frame your face.

Long hair is versatile, but it works for you if you know what to do with it. Morning rush is not a time to experiment. So it has to be done during a calm moment, when you have some time, and with new products.

Thanks smittie :) I don't hate the length of my hair at the moment, but I would still like to get my pixie back eventually. I just felt more like myself with that style, if that makes sense. Also, I just find that longer hair just gets in my way, especially seeing as I do archery and ballet. Even tying it up doesn't work all the time, because I still get stray hairs that decide to fall out of the tie or the kirby grips, and then they end up getting in my eyes when I really don't want them to.

Ah, right, thanks for clearing that up Astrid :)

I also figured out how to add photos instead of putting links, so I added some photos of me with my hair completely down. That should hopefully give a better idea of the length of my hair at the moment than the link of the photo that I originally posted.

But it will take a while to get rid of these highlights, I think. Unless I just get it cut into a pixie cut without donating the dyed parts of my hair (because the highlights are only at the sides of my hair, the back of my hair isn't dyed at all, so I could still donate that). But I guess I'll just have to wait and see what it looks like within four or five months.

At the moment, my thoughts are that I should let it grow out for another few months (I'd say until late October, possibly a week or so before Halloween), and see how long it takes for some length to appear between the highlights and my roots. There is already some length there. I'd say around an inch. I realise that it will not grow at an inhuman rate, and I will also need to leave a few inches of hair on my head if I want to have a pixie cut. If it seems that it is taking too long to grow out (as in, if there is no or very little visible difference in the length of my hair at all after around five months), I will probably just go and get it cut into a pixie, because I am not really prepared to wait longer than two years for it to grow to a considerable length.

Besides, I'll need to wait until I can get it cut into a pixie without having the dyed highlights at the ends of my hair anyway, so I might as well leave it for another few months.

Thank you for all of your replies :) I did try to reply to all of you individually, but there doesn't seem to be an option for that... I am pretty new to this forum. I think I've figured out how to put photos in this post. There is a photo option in this reply feature that was not there when I submitted this thread, for some reason...

Not sure if I already said this in my previous post, but my face is more of an oval shape, and my hair is very thick. I also have relatively high cheekbones. I have had a pixie cut before (I'm pretty sure I already said that, but I'll say it again just in case), and, in my opinion, it was the best hairstyle that I've ever had. I think it looked really good with my facial structure and features (and I got compliments from a lot of other girls who were at school with me at the time), and it was pretty low-maintenance, so I didn't really need to do anything with it, unless I had a horribly bad hair day. And I kept it that short for around three years, so I think it's safe to say that I'm comfortable with having my hair that short ^^

I do still want to donate my hair to charity though. I realise that it will take way longer to do that now, because I made the mistake of putting highlights into it, so I'll have to wait until it's at a considerable length when the highlights have eventually been cut off. I have dyed over them with my natural hair colour (or at least a dye that is very similar to my natural hair colour), but the highlights are still lighter than the rest of my hair, so obviously they will not be able to be used in a wig, as the ends will be lighter than the rest of the hair. Unless I cut multiple ponytails and give the charity the ponytails from the back of my hair... But it will still take at least a year and a half, possibly even two years to grow it to a reasonable length, I think. Especially seeing as it is layered, and the layers will need to grow out too.

It's actually pretty long at the moment, considering that I only started to grow it out a year ago. It's shoulder-length, but not a short shoulder-length, if that makes sense. As in it does actually touch my shoulders.

I am also currently taking biotin, which has been making my hair grow a bit faster, but of course it isn't a miracle pill, so I don't expect it to be at my waist within a year or anything. Honestly, if I can get it past my shoulder blades without the highlights, I think that should be long enough. The minimum length for the ponytails should be at least seven inches, according to the website, so it would be good if I could get it longer than that, but I don't really want to spend ages growing it out. So, if I can get the hair to seven or eight inches to contribute to a shorter wig, that would also be good. And yeah, I have been told that some of the hair that is contributed doesn't even go into any of the wigs. But there is still a chance that my hair will be contributed to a wig, so I think it's still worth doing it.

When I do eventually get my hair cut back into a pixie - and I think I will do it, but I'll have to wait around two years (maybe less, but it really depends on how fast my hair grows. And my hair does grow pretty fast) - I'll probably ask for a longer pixie than what I usually got in the past (the first photo of me with my shorter hair actually shows my pixie when it was starting to grow out, so it looked different when it was newly cut). There is one particular pixie cut that I am seriously considering at the moment, which I will also put below.
Or possibly a style similar to Audrey Tautou's hair, because I've always loved her pixie :) Although I can already see quite a lot of similarities between the pixie in that photo and Tautou's hair (except Tautou's hair is maybe shorter at the sides and the front).

I have attached a photo of what I looked like with my pixie cut. I think the photo is around 2 or 3 years old, but my face hasn't really changed that much since then.

And I have also attached photos of me with my longer hair. I turned my head slightly in one of these photos, so hopefully you can get an idea of how far up my hair the highlights go. Hopefully you should be able to see them, as they are still lighter than my natural hair.

I also feel that this is way too long in advance to ask this question! I think either go for the short hair if you want it right now, or let it grow and decide what to do when they're longer. You might feel completely different then. I know absolutely nothing about donating hair btw, but from what the others said it seems to be not that clear cut.

Oh and I have one bad hair day after the other - I also have a pixie and love it, but it needs water EVERY morning. But I don't care, it doesn't take long and I feel so much better with my short hair.

If the last time you had any dye put in was only 6 months ago, why not cut off the processed length and start from scratch. I'm not sure how much the hair growth aid speeds up the process but I really don't think 2 years will be enough to get the length required. In order to donate hair it needs to be healthy and that requires regular trims. I grew my hair out from a very short pixie and after 3 years I doubt it was long enough to donate. It was 'long' by my standards but not really long, as in, half way down my back.
Reading what Mochi just posted is very disheartening. Maybe there is a different way you can make a difference in the lives of these girls you wish to help.

I strongly reiterate what BrieN is saying. Also I just hopped online to read up on hair donation, and even though you wouldn't be giving them dyed hair, apparently half of all hair donations are unsuitable for various reasons, and get thrown out. In any case, it's noble of you to want to help, but it does sound like putting your life on hold for way too long.

Well, if you look at my avatar, you know what I will say. :)

Welcome to the forum.

I think BrieN makes good sense. If you want to cut it now, cut it. You don't need to earn the right. But if you're not sure, then leave it long for a while. It sounds as if you enjoyed short hair and have the right hair and features for it.

I believe that thick or thin hair can work in a pixie, but as someone who has thick, I can vouch for its suitability. For me, long hair gets hot and heavy and short means I almost never have a bad hair day.

First I want to say "hi" as I think you are pretty new to the forum. So HI!

The thing is, that is a long time to wait to feel like you are the best version of yourself. Body image can be such a minefield for so many of us, but (at least for me) self-care is the first step away from the negative voices. A new lipstick or self-pedicure are powerful weapons against the enemy as is a new haircut. The one you want. now. You don't have to wait to "earn" the new look by donating your hair, you don't have to worry about what anyone else might think about it, you just have to decide if you want it and if you can maintain it. That is all.

If you need a little momentum, I suggest you post a photo of yourself and let us get a sense of your bone structure. We are a very convincing bunch.

I used to have a pixie cut back in 2012, and I had it for around 3 years until I grew it out in 2015. At the moment it is shoulder-length, and I think I'm going to continue to grow it until it reaches the bottom of my ribcage (which may take a year or two, but I actually take biotin to help it grow, so it does tend to grow pretty quickly). I don't hate my longer hair, but I just can't help noticing that I really preferred having it shorter...

My longer hair gets in my way all the time. It keeps getting caught in things if it's not up in a ponytail, I've found stray hairs all over my apartment, it gets tangled really easily... and it isn't even that long at the moment. It's shoulder-length. Which is making me wonder how bad it will be when it gets much longer. And I'm not really that great at styling my own hair, so it's basically a low-ish ponytail or a semi-okay updo. So it doesn't really seem worth it to have longer hair if I can't even do that much with it. Oh, also, I can't braid it. Apparently it isn't long enough yet.

At the moment, I can only really see two downsides to having a pixie cut again. And that is having to go to the hairdresser regularly (which would cost a lot of money, and I am not made of money), and having bad hair days. Because past experience has taught me that when you have a bad hair day with a pixie cut, there really isn't very much that you can do about it. Whenever I had a bad hair day with my pixie cut a few years ago, I basically had to wash it to get it to look normal again :/ Or put hair wax in my hair and try to make the rest of my hair kind of rough to match that one patch that was refusing to flatten against the rest of my hair. Or to go with the "I'm having a bad hair day so I'm going to wear a hat all day" option.

I've also noticed that my longer hair just makes me look... I don't want to say "larger", but that's honestly the only way that I can put it. My jawline looked much more clean cut with shorter hair. And my facial features were emphasised more effectively (because you're kind of forced to look at the face when there isn't much hair to look at). And I've been facing a lot of body image issues this year that I just didn't have when my hair was shorter, and I haven't really gained any weight (or at the very least, not a considerable amount, or an amount that would actually change my appearance too much), so I think it might be because of the hair... Basically, I just don't think I look as attractive with longer hair than I did with my pixie cut. Sounds conceited, I know, but it's true.

My plan for now is to grow it very long, and then get it cut and sent to a charity that makes wigs for little girls with cancer, so they can have hair again. I haven't decided exactly which charity to go for, as I know that there are a few who do this. I want to do some research into it first before I choose one (just in case one charity has a major flaw or something), and my hair will be growing while I do this. After I have cut the ponytail/braid off, I will get my hair cut into a pixie cut again. It might take a while to grow it out though, because I had highlights put into my hair around half a year ago, and I know that these charities don't take dyed hair. So I will have to wait for it to grow to a considerable length without the dyed parts, even though they have been dyed to my natural hair colour again. But there is still a difference in the colour (the highlights are a lighter shade of brown to the rest of my hair, but not too much lighter. Enough for people to notice though).

I would say that my face shape is an oval shape. So it should suit most hairstyles (although I personally feel that anyone can pull off a pixie, as long as the hairdresser doesn't do a terrible job).

I don't have a boyfriend at the moment, although I have someone who is very close to possibly being my boyfriend. And I honestly don't think he would care if I got my hair cut into a pixie cut, because he has very long hair himself, and he is not a very judgemental person. I'm honestly more worried about how my parents will react, but it's my hair, so they can't really do anything about it if I do decide to get it cut :)

Obviously I won't get it cut into a pixie until around late-2017, or maybe even mid-2018. It really depends on how long it takes for my hair to grow out long enough to be made into a wig for the charity, honestly. So I still have a long time to think over this properly, but I would also like some feedback from other people on this.

I would add photos (because I still have photos on my laptop of when my hair was shorter), but I can't for some reason. Sorry about that :( I've been told that I looked a lot like Ginnifer Goodwin from the first season of Once Upon a Time when I had shorter hair, so try to imagine that? But keep in mind that I'm not an exact double of her, and my face is more of an oval shape, while hers is rounder. My hair is also very thick, which is good for pixie cuts, according to many of the hairdressers that I have had over the past few years. Not having photos really isn't very helpful, I know. I would add them if I could, but I can't copy and paste.

But yeah, let me know what you think :) I'm seriously considering getting it cut back to a shorter hairstyle anyway. Possibly something like Abby Maitland's hair from season 3 of Primeval? You can find photos on Google Images if you haven't seen the show before. Or possibly Goodwin's season 1 hair from Once Upon a Time. Because I miss having my short hair.
