A great question. I am a fan of duplicating items, especially when they are my hard to fit pieces. However, I never do an exact duplicate. I will purchase two of the same style of item, but it has to have some difference between the two pieces, usually a different color or different wash. Even with my workhorse pieces, I have found when the item is 100% identical, I get tired of it twice as fast.

Wow, thank you all!! I still have not absolutely decided. I'm wearing the taupe ones today and loving those just as much as the blue ones....so, honestly, it's still tempting me. I almost never duplicate and almost never want to duplicate. So the fact that I am even considering it sort of interests me.

Rae...I did see the jean comes in lighter washes. But, here's the thing -- it's a different fabrication. And if there's one thing I've learned it is that when it comes to me and jeans, fabrication is next only to cut in importance. If it's the wrong material, it won't work. Plus, as Catnip so intelligently points out, I won't want to wear skinnies in the summer anyway (and I want the light wash for summer.) Truth is, I won't want to wear JEANS in summer, but BFs are slightly more likely to get wear then.

Well, I'm still pondering. Thank you all for your thoughts; I have found it a very interesting read.

For once, I have no opinion :)

But this thread is such an interesting read because it lists so many arguments for duplicating, and for not duplicating, that I'm really starting to question my own duplication inclinations. Historically sometimes duplicating has worked out well for me, but at other times it was a waste of money, so I guess my decision is always on which scenario is uppermost in my mind when I'm facing the decision to duplicate, or not!

I duplicate frequently and never get full use of the second item (unless it's something like underwear or tee shirts). Five years ago I bought two bright blue cashmere turtlenecks because I loved the color and was afraid the first sweater would wear out. I've never worn the second sweater. I don't know why I keep doing this.

If it is true that skinnies are on the way out, then buying two pairs may not be the best use of your funds (even at a very good price). I hate wearing skinnies in the summer because they are too hot, and summer is not far away. Unless you have purchased everything else on your spring and summer shopping lists, I would hold off.

Now if I could only follow my own advice.

I have been tempted to duplicate my current favorite skinnies as well, but I am waiting because Angie's right, soon we'll be out of jeans, and by the time the Fall rolls around, it's VERY possible that trends will change away from skinnies and towards boot cuts and even flares. I am thinking about the runway images and all those super wide legs. Not saying skinnies will disappear -- just saying that you may find yourself craving and ISO the perfect wide leg jeans instead.

Suz, the length was the other reason I didn't get them. A 29" inseam is definitely an ankle length on me, and these don't come in a tall size. I do like the ankle length in pants, but not so much in jeans - I prefer those to be either full length or rolled BF length.

And, "substantial thighs?" Where are you hiding them? You're too teeny tiny to have substantial thighs! Now me, on the other hand...

Karie, it's hard to say because the lowness of the rise will depend on your own rise. If you know what I mean.

Mine is long proportionately for my height.

And these jeans have a low rise by anybody's standards -- about 7 inches in front.

But for some reason it works. That's because the waistband is contoured. It's 12 inches or more in the back. And they never feel like they are falling down. Mind you, they probably couldn't fall down over my substantial thighs.

With other low rise jeans I sometimes got the "it's cutting into my hip bone" feeling. Even if they fit, technically speaking -- they felt awful. But not these.

ETA: I should add, these would be really short on you. Definite ankle jeans.

I would wait, at least until summer gets going and then see if you are still interested in duplicating for fall.

On another note, these are the very same jeans I was thinking of ordering a few days ago. What stopped me was the low rise. I don't mind low rise, but I prefer an inch below my natural waist. Are these lower than that? Sometimes low rise jeans feel like they're falling down on me.

YES YES YES. I have duplicated magic jeans in the past. Although you'd prefer a lighter wash, I don't think you'll ever regret having an extra pair of these -- you can always add your light washed jeans but you'll get more wear & pleasure out of a second pair of these.

I have panicked and duplicated stuff that has been a waste (see the BF jeans I should never have bought at my skinniest moment). But in a different color I would get the same style if it worked. Sounds like you have decided!

For those who duplicate - I've asked this before - do you put both in rotation or hoard the spare till the first item is done for?

Honestly, when I look at them, I see straight leg, not skinny. Probably because they're not calf-sucking. I'd so buy another pair.

This is a hard one. I was going for duplicating with the half price ones but Angie is so wise about these things. I'm thinking that in your climate you may need them in future winters to tuck into boots. Will you be looking for skinny jeans next winter?
I duplicated a pair of a Lucky jeans soon after losing weight but the duplicate pair had little wear. I gave them to someone who needed them more than I did.

How often are you in the situation of wanting to wear your skinnies but finding that they are in the wash? If it is weekly, then I think you could make a good argument for duplication. But if it is more that you love the jeans you have and are wearing them a lot, I think wait and allow room for the possibility of a new love.

Suz - I am a big fan of duplication. But it's your thoughts that count. You only need to ask yourself one queston: If those jeans were destroyed tomorrow and you could not get another pair would you be heartbroken? If the answer is yes, get them immediately. If your stomach does not hit your feet, if you do not start to sweat and hyperventilate, then you might want to wait. I would have already hit "buy." When else will have find a low rise that gives you a fab long torso and still makes your legs look a mile long. It's the mother of all sweet spots. But only you can know best. Good luck, whatever call you make will be for the best!

I probably would not duplicate. As someone else pointed out, jeans generally last a long time, and you can wear them a few times before washing. So it's not the same as, say, a form-fitting top that might easily get soiled at the underarms and neck after one wearing, leaving you without a valuable staple to use in creating outfits.

I duplicated a pair of jeans early in my style journey, and I haven't ever worn the duplicate pair! It's just sitting in my closet. I have found that I have enough other pants and jeans that I am not forced to wear the duplicate pair, plus the original pair can be worn enough between wash cycles as to make the need for a dupe unnecessary.

I am like you, Suz, in that I too want variety in my closet. If I duplicate something, it makes me feel like I need to wear the thing even more often to justify the dupe pair. So it's actually less freeing to me emotionally. Also, with pieces that I have duplicated, I invariably come across something else that I would rather have purchased instead.

I think you look fabulous in those jeans.
I would probably go for the ebay ones at half price as long as they are returnable. At that price your size may sell-out.
Even if you don't duplicate you still have a perfect pair so you cannot lose here.

Sounds like you have a decision ---- I'm finding myself a bit flummoxed by the late spring. It makes it harder to imagine and prepare for warmer seasons. Someone cue the leaves and grass and flowers now, please! They're late for their entrance!

Well I've often admired those on you. They are pretty much perfect. And if the predictions are correct, we might be in skinnies for another 2 months if not more. At the eBay price, I'd do it. Mostly because I almost got burned when I delayed duplicating my perfect jeans and they stopped making them (I eventually found stock and bought two pairs, no regrets whatsoever although I now have 3 pairs).
In our climate, I really hope skinnies are never going away for winter. They just make so much more sense than bootcuts or even straights, which just don't tuck into boots as well.

Based on what you're saying, I say wait and just spend some time stalking them on ebay (set up a saved search for that model in your size and it will email you if the item gets listed. You can then see if the price is cheap enough to merit buying and bid/buy accordingly). I do this all the time and it's how I've obtained several pairs of AG stilt crop BF jeans in a few different finishes for around $30 each).

Janet that is a great point! I NEVER find jeans that fit so I would duplicate pair. If you don't have as many problems finding jeans then that is a whole different story.

I triplicated (?) a pair of jeans this winter because I have such a hard time fitting jeans.

Thank you all!! I'm going to sit on this decision for today...Isabel, you're right that the money can go towards something else for the summer, and if I found these on ebay now I will probably find them again. No need to pounce this minute, anyway. Thank you for offering good counsel!
