Banofi, I only purchased the cardigan, not the cropped top and skirt, but I did find myself wishing they were available in a different color that fit my palette and with a non cropped top because they would make a great sweater dress alternate!

I found a long Autumn Cashmere Cardigan online from NAS and it is different enough from the other two I own so that I think it's worth purchasing, especially at the sale price. My EF long cardigan is a black and white silk melange (Charcoal) that can be worn year round but I wear it fall/winter because the darker color goes better with my cold season wardrobe. The Vince long cardigan is very lightweight and can be worn in Spring/summer and indoors for a/c. It looks grey in the photo, but it is really taupe. The NAS cardigan color is listed as cement, and is cashmere, my favorite cold weather fabric!

I like the idea of having one light colored long cardigan and one darker colored long cardigan for fall/winter. That will give me more options for creating the low to medium contrast outfits that work best for me with my current fall/winter wardrobe. ( I also have light colors in the winter because my color type is light summer).

I'm going to go ahead and order this one item only. I know it will get good use. I'm done with the NAS and with shopping now unless one of the other items on my list happens along.

I'm surprised by how uninteresting I found the sale. I really only looked for the items on my list, and really didn't find anything that thrilled me except this sweater. I'm being very picky and if the sweater is wrong once it arrives, it's going back.

years ago when my kids were little (15+years) would buy at the NAS, and the sales were great, I feel that as Nords has expanded the variety and stylish-ness of the items at the sale has lessened.
could also be that my needs have changed too.
I bought something 2 years ago and October rolled around and I really thought "why did I buy this?", ended up donating.

Don't break your shopping break if you really don't need anything.
I have to say other than shoes, any clothing I have bought at the NAS sale has dimmed by the time it gets to be wearable in terms of the weather. It is July and in 4 months will you feel the same about the dress or pants.?

Wool sheath dresses etc will be around and at probably just as good prices.

Will you feel guilty, or like you failed at something if you break your no shopping 'till August rule? If you won't feel bad about yourself, then I would set a budget, either for the sale or for the items you want to buy and only purchase something if it's perfect - fit, style, color, price, and only if it's on your list.

Honestly, you seem to have a lot of very nice clothes. I can't imagine that you have true wardrobe holes, which means occasions you can't find anything appropriate to wear for. The reasons you mentioned why you wanted to stop shopping sound sensible. I don't know anything about NAS but from what Laura just said it doesn't make much sense to shop it anyway for most of the items on your list. As for a longer trench, have you tried your longer skirts and dresses with your shorter outerwear? Maybe take some pics and evaluate. I often like that look even better than longer outerwear. It does depend a bit on the particular styles of course.

I hear you on "overly involved in the shopping experience in a way I never had before"! If it were me, I'd head to the sale for *solely* those items on my list. No veering off course, even for "essentials" like bras. If you think you might want any essentials, put them on your list before you shop. I personally feel that looking at perfect finds and then saying, "nope, don't need that" actually exercises and builds whatever tiny part of my brain is responsible for restraint and discipline. everyones different though!

I think the problem with giving yourself permission to look at the sales for your HEWIs can be that you end up finding other things you like (or love!) but don't need and end up buying them. I think it depends on your willpower. I always find it better not to look at all if I am trying to exercise restraint.

Everyone raises excellent points!

The spending limitation was put in place for several reasons.

1. I definitely don't want to become a compulsive shopper and after building a new wardrobe over the past year, it felt like I had become overly involved with the shopping experience in a way I never had before, so I wanted to press a pause button.

2. I do not want to financially sustain the level of spending it took to rebuild my wardrobe. I want to use my money for other purposes so an imposed SYC period seemed to make sense while I consider what to do next.

The items on my list are a combination of wardrobe holes and HEWIs. the biggest priorities for me are the two dresses and the long trench. I consider them wardrobe holes. I have an occasion for the fun sweater dress, and I am hoping to find something versatile enough that I can also use it for work. The wool sheath is a replacement for an older worn out model. It sounds like I should hold off on looking for dresses until later.

The trench: I purchased midi length dresses and skirts but my trenches are all knee length. With our weather I need something. This might be one item to consider for the NAS.

Everything else can wait, and are really HEWIs.

I think you need to consider in the context of your own personal wardrobe and needs. What you've listed here as some purchases would be a big spending spree for me all at once. Are these longtime wardrobe holes or HEWIs or are you just feeling the urge to splurge because it's a sale? Are any of these items things that can't wait till after your shopping hiatus? Is there any reason for the ban? This is why I don't do shopping bans any more - they make me feel deprived and I end up spending more later.

Is there a particular reason for your SYC time period? If you're refraining in order to keep your financial status secure, then rest assured that there will be wonderful things to buy in September. Are you planning to move, change jobs or go on a trip? Ditto. Having a newer and well functioning wardrobe makes it easier to look fab while saving your $$$ for things that matter most to you.

However, if you're taking a pause in your wardrobe spending because you're in a good place with your closet, and you want to make sure you don't buy needlessly, then shopping NAS might make sense, as long as you stick to your list. I also do periodic spending pauses, but I'm not strict about them. I find that allowing exceptions occasionally actually makes me less likely to binge later -- as if knowing that I "can" buy something makes it easier to decide that I will choose not to.

I suppose it depends on the purpose of the SYC period and what you expect to happen when it's over. Is it to break a habit, to stem the flow of cash, to absorb what you currently own, etc? When the ban is over, will you be on the hunt for these same items at full retail prices?

I'm doing what I hope will be a very targeted shop at NAS this year. I have a few specific items and am open to a "love it, must have it" or two. Last year was more of a free-for-all that was pretty much useless for me, as I returned most of it after the thrill was gone.

This is a personal question you must decide, of course, but I would say no, stick to your guns if the no-spend period is important to you.

In my experience, the biggest and most unusual (ie not repeated later in the season) NAS deals are in leather jackets and winter coats, shoes and boots from higher end brands, and undergarments. Everything else tends to come around again later, or is not that hard to find at other retailers at a comparable price.

break my no spend agreement with myself to make some NAS purchases? I had originally planned to refrain from spending on clothes until August or even September. Most of my wardrobe is new in the past year. I don't need much updating, although my style sense definitely became more solid towards Spring and Summer. To use Angie's term, I want to curate my wardrobe, keeping it updated by making careful and planned choices.

My search list would include:
1. A very nice, excellent fitting, high quality wool sheath dress in my color palette, preferably with sleeves. (Yes! Another person hunting for dresses!)
2. A long cardigan (I already have a charcoal one by EF) in a second neutral or a color. I reach for the long cardigan more than a blazer.
3. A wool pencil skirt in a good color for my wardrobe
4. A fun wool sweater dress
5. A long trench to wear over midi length dresses and skirts
6. An interesting unique long sleeve blouse in my color palette

(The next three are very low priority items and I am not even sure they should be on the list)
7/8. Replacements for my Cole Hahn brown wool coat and brown leather jacket.
9. Any type of topper that would fit my style descriptors, but is not a preppy looking blazer or jean jacket, but is also not a standard/basic classic cardigan. (I guess that is a mystery description isn't it? I know what I don't want but not what I do want!)

My main question is are these items that I should look for at NAS, or is it better to wait until later? I read Angie's post about how to shop NAS and it seems like a number of my list items are good choices for the sale. I don't have much experience shopping the sale so if anyone can weigh in that would be great!
