Fathenry I dont know if that's part of the problem - I wore the shorter style shorts last summer and got compliments that I look nice in them (which personally I am not that keen on I think I have fat knees!) and I am wondering if maybe the reason I cant find anything to go with the longer length shorts is maybe because they just dont suit me? Skirts & dresses are items on my to buy list as I'm determined after reading through all the helpful advice here to get some variety happening!

Maya I had a few of the voluminous top in my wardrobe from last summer and now I think about it the ones that were most flattering is anything without a high neck and something either nipped in a bit at the waist or with some elastic ruching around the bottom to bring in the silhouette. Maybe this is the way to go with a shorter leg length?

Chewy I've considered the clamdiggers but I just cant seem to make them work and I just feel so dumpy in them. I do agree about the floaty top being cooler though so that's what I'm aiming towards.

I live in the desert, where it's really hot all summer long. I also am an hourglass with short legs. I wore a lot of clamdiggers this year- with voluminous tops, and dresses. I especially like them with tunics. I agree with Maya about finding the right fit. There is nothing like a floaty garment on a hot day.

Hmm I haven't seen you but I have a hunch you just think voluminous tops look awful on you when they do not! You may just need to find the right silhouette and fit!

That said, a sleeveless top (thick straps to cover the bra straps) in a lightweight fabric or mesh would be my default. But I'm hooked on voluminous tops for summer. They are just so breezy and ventilating in a way that fitted tops aren't. It's nice to have a top that floats AWAY from the body instead of clinging towards it when it gets THAT hot.

Welcome! I'm not an expert but I think mid-thigh shorts are flattering on everyone. For your walking shorts, I defer to the experts. Have you tried some nice cool summer dresses?

Ok this is my first post after lurking around on this site for a while and I'm already addicted! I have a question about shorts, last summer mainly wore shorter style of shorts (something that would finish about 2-3 inches above my knee) but after reading some of the blog posts about "walk shorts" falling just above the knee thought I would give them a try. They dont look too bad on me but I am having trouble with what tops to wear with them. It's incredibly hot here at the moment 35c degrees here today (I think that's about 95F?) so no layering options are available. I'm trying to get away from the t-shirt look and go for nice tops but everything here in Australia seems to be big voluminous tops that just look awful on me!
