Yes you are right, opaque tights allows you to wear shorter skirts without looking cheap.

I think you could totally work this look - it's fun & hip and the opaque tights keep it modest. The only thing to watch out for is the length - that it's not hitting you where your thighs are widest which would draw attention to them, especially in contrasting colors. I had this happen with a couple of short dresses and it wasn't until I saw the pictures that I realized how unflattering this was - another inch or two would have been fine.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone!

Heh heh, I thought Angie might be unsure. I can definitely see how it's a look you need to think about and plan first (to keep it looking purposeful and classy). I think for my personal style, I'd stick to an A-line dress (as apposed to a shorter skirt) and I'd still want to keep the look very clean. In the case of the dress I posted above, I'd pair it with black opaque tights and either black boots, or black booties (the kind meant to be worn with dresses), or possibly a stacked heel oxford. I may or may not add a belt, I'd have to play with it a bit. I think that style might be okay over skinnies as well?

Absolutely yes! I can definitely see you in the dress, and I agree that skirts and dresses can be shorter when worn over opaque tights - either with boots, or footless tights and pumps with chuny heels, booties etc. I wear the look and have a couple fall and winter skirts in my wardrobe whose length would be too short for summer skirts.

I bought a sweater dress from H&M that I thought I would only wear over skinnies because it is on the short side. But Angie gave it the thumbs up to wear with opaque tops and boots so maybe the tights make the difference.

Ana, I think you can pull this look off very well. I'll be doing something similar and I'm curious to see how it works and what kind of feedback I'll get I LOVE that dress (especially the way it shows wearing the long sleeves under the dress). I think it would be very versatile.

I like the idea of it Ana for sure. would you wear that with boots or shoes? And the dress you linked to is great.

I will personally not do this. The combo emphasizes the skinniness of my calves and I do indeed look like a chicken (or turkey).

Thanks Nicole! The idea is to definitely keep it classy. This is the dress I was looking at when I formulated this question:

http://www.net-a-porter.com/product/25865

Not sure if I would actually get this dress or not (it would come down farther on me than on the mannequin), but this is sort of the style I had in mind--a shift/a-line type dress like you mentioned the Nordies sales person wearing.

Ana, I love the look of a shorter length skirt worn with opaque tights. When I was in Nordies last weekend, the girl in the Petite department had on this adorable shift that stopped several inches above her knee, with black opaque tights. I loved her look and complimented her on it. If she didn't have the opaques on, the dress would have been too short, for sure. And if she chose to wear the dress with skinnies it would have totally worked. So, I agree with your line of thought.

Hi Everybody!

I've been online browsing clothes the past few days (aah, the weekend), especially dresses, and a trend I've noticed is to have a mid-thigh or so length dress with opaque black tights. I was wondering about this--is it acceptable to wear a slightly shorter skirt length (3"-4" above knee, not showing your business when you sit down) with very opaque tights (we're talking close to 80 denier)? If it is, then my thinking was if you get the right dress you could also pair it with skinny jeans, and then get more ROI out of it. Does that make sense?

Anyway, thanks everyone!
