Thanks Sunee. I'm in Toronto, unfortunately but I'll definitely keep this in mind!

Thanks for the online tip, LAR101. I'll check it out!

Diana G and Laurie, thanks for that info. I know nothing about how garments are put together, so that's really helpful to know!

It's an expensive alteration, and one that some tailors wouldn't touch. The proportion of the sleeve may be off if you shorten from the shoulder. (SeeDianne's comment.) Usually, the only kind of sleeve that can't be shortened is one with working buttons or true buttonholes. I usually have to have my sleeves lengthened, and it seems that lots of jackets come with working buttonholes now.

Laurie is right, You do risk altering the place where the sleeve is shaped for the elbow bend. Sleeves get narrower gradually towards the wrist so when you lift from the top you are in effect, moving the sleeve 'head' down to a narrower area also. However, if you have plenty of sleeve width this would not be a problem. It is do-able and it's something I've done for customers, but you need someone who knows what they're doing.

I have short arms, and I also sew. So I know that my shortness occurs in the upper part of my arm, not the forearm. That said, it depends on the sleeve. If the sleeve is a two piece sleeve, there is a built-in shaping for the elbow usually. If you removed from the top, there is potential to put that shaping in the wrong place - too high up. Also, if you remove from the top of a set-in sleeve, there is usually ease built into the sleeve cap that helps the sleeve fall nicely over the shoulder joint. Shoulders and sleeves - the armscye area - can be tricky to alter, mainly because the body needs to move so many different ways right in that area. So much depends on the sleeve type, how much ease there is in it to begin with, and how well the jacket fits you in the shoulders without the alteration.

Depending on your budget and your shape, I might recommend getting a jacket made to measure for you.
I work with some menswear companies that will make clothing for women but truthfully they do a better job on rectangular frames. The womenswear designers that I know who do custom work are all in NYC so I don't know how helpful that is for you. But if you want some names / suggestions for custom made, just let me know!

I am a total fusspot on this, too, kerry. I think any men's tailor should be able to do it (or quote a price). It's more costly than taking it from the bottom because they have to undo the lining and such, and take off the sleeve itself. So there is some work involved, but it need not be terribly complex. Just more labour.

The real trick may not be the money but finding someone who can do it well. I'm going to look into it because I don't think I can find a blazer, off the rack, that'll fit in the sleeve (I buy petite for jackets). I like scrunching and rolling sleeves but still want the sleeve to not overwhelm when down.

Yes. It's not a cheap alteration...unless your jacket happens to come from Danier leather, where they will do it for $25!!!!

But it's worth it, in my view, if the jacket/ coat has real buttonholes or other details at the wrist that could be lost.

I haven't tried it, but know it would be quite expensive. I'm assuming you can't shorten the sleeves at the cuff. Sometimes stitching to resemble a buttonhole can be successfully removed by a good tailor. Of course this won't work with a real buttonhole.

Has anyone tried shortening blazer sleeves at the shoulder? If so, how did it turn out and how expensive was it?
