See update in OP re: Uniqlo.
Carla you are right- I had actually ordered 2 sizes, and kept the smaller one, as despite being boxy, it’s soft and slightly body- molding if not sized for a generous fit.

The Uniqlo micro-puffer vests don’t have any shapely tailoring, but the right size (vs oversized) can fit quite nicely.

Brookie, I’m a bit hesitant also, as my past goals for down or fleece vests were for minimizing that look, getting slightly fitted ( I actually do best in ones that have that slight fit and “ flare” to fit over hips without sizing up) and hip- length, not too bulky. So the shorter “ fashion “ styles are a boxier, puffier look. Hence why wished I had some local store versions to try on.

I like it for tall and thin people but not suitable to my 5’, round body type. I look like the Michelin Man. Happy for those that can enjoy the look.

I was looking at the Aritzia ones. I have ordered several pieces from them. Returns are easy, but they do charge $8.00 in Canada.

Try Aritzia or J. Crew. Aritzia has a cropped vest (shorty Super Puff) but that would be too warm for you. But this packable one might work:

Angie, that one looks about the right length but may be too puffy for me. Irina, thanks, sizing is tricky, because for the vest I want it to layer over but not hang too loosely, so not sure about my “ usual size” because I like my sweaters from Uniqlo to fit loosely but then vest to rein things in a bit.
Food for thought!

I tried Uniqlo long and short puffer vests, thin ones. I don't find them bulky or maybe try also a size down. I picked a wrong size in a short puffer vest but might give it another go.

I like vests for style particularly as a casual “ third piece ” , but since I run cold, I seldom can use a vest for warmth as in typical photos of someone wearing puffed vest over a LS T or a plaid shirt. I do fine it useful to layer a fleece of thin down under a jacket, as warming core but less constricted at arms.
That said, I was considering whether I might enjoy a shorter length puffy vest just as a styling piece, meaning, I’d wear a warm enough top, depending on temperature indoors or out. Maybe more indoors as could wear a coat over everything for going to and fro in really cold weather.
I had noticed last winter I tried wearing a typical mid- hip down vest with a midi skirt and top and was just not happy with proportions- it was too long. And o have several skirts and higher- waist pants that I’d tuck top & try vest that was just at high hip.
I was considering a Uniqlo short vest - some reviews said was too bulky , but I’m not sure I’d feel that way for styling.
Unfortunately there aren’t a lot of retail stores nearby that carry “ fashion “ vests for me to try, so I’d be having to do the size- guessing &ship & return cycle .
I’d want to be able to wear over an untucked shirt or knit top also for some versatility, but it wouldn’t have to be a totally universal item.
I did browse Nordstrom online a bit— a bit amazed that one can pay $2k for a down vest ! Probably would not want to try a really short or architectural version as I think it would be too much on me.

Anyone have any success with specific brands of short but not too out- there puffer vests, sort of along the same proportions idea as wearing shorter tops with skirts and pants?

UPDATE: I decided to go with Iniqlo short vest in the Khaki color, which I was hoping looked like a taupe color. It does and the length and fit are good , and a bit different from my Hiking Grandma proportions with more gearish vests.
I had also tried a Joules vest from Nordstrom- it was a good color but too small, and it’s in numerical sizes so didn’t know whether to go one or 2 sizes up. But, more the issue, it was stiffer and more plasticky than the Uniqlo, which helped me realize I was this type of vest to feel very soft, light, and squishy. I think the Aritzia still might be good, but I like this one quite well and decided not to do more ordering. I think on me it might be a tad shorter than the Aritzia, based on photos only though.
