Maya, I missed this when you posted!! I think your new cut looks awesome! It's very fun and youthful, and falls into the brave category, because it's different. I know you have not had luck with product, but there is something out there that will work for your hair. You just have to keep trying. Maybe look for samples, or ask friends if you can try some of theirs.

I'd love to see photos of it after you used the flat iron!!!

I really like the haircut too, Maya. I'm far from a hair expert so I can't offer up any advice. But being a makeup and hair n00b (okay I've never heard of this spelling before) I'm finding that incremental steps are the way to go.

I think it's a touch shorter than I wanted to go, but I'm pretty satisfied overall. In a couple of weeks I think it will be right where I want it. But I love how low maintenance it is, and how I'm not constantly THINKING about it. I think I still need the right product though--it won't stay in place otherwise. Also, Shiny might be right that the layers in the back need to go a bit shorter. I'll sort that out next time I go.

Tomorrow I'm going to head out to the Aveda store, and on Friday when I get out of work early, I'm thinking of swinging by Sephora and asking them to please tutor this makeup n00b.

Two steps ahead of you Brianna! I have the Phomollient and the volumizing spray already. I'm keen on the hair potion because it seems to give both volume and texture in one shot. I'll be getting it tomorrow hopefully. It's crazy expensive but I think it's probably worth it.

I've been away for a few days but I love the cut, Maya. Good luck with the experimentation and keep us posted. You might want to give Aveda's Phomollient foam a try, too. It makes my very fine thin hair feel a little more dry and texturized, somehow, and it adds volume.

Maya, I am late and can't offer any styling help, and Angie has already spoken, but I also wanted to add that I really like it on you, and it doesn't make your features more prominent at all. I think you could go even shorter if you wanted. I also don't think you'd need additional makeup, you have gorgeous eyes and skin already

I did start using a flat iron and it definitely helps, though I doubt I will use it every day. I think I got the answer to my choice of product from here:

http://www.aveda.com/looks/gal.....brary.tmpl

I don't know if that link will work. There should be a blonde woman with a piecey cut at the bottom. It's a bit like what I have, though shorter. The one above that has the same texture. Both use the hair potion that I was thinking of getting originally. It will do double duty to get both volume and texture. After I get my hands on this miracle stuff I will post the new pictures. I'm also going to swing by Anthropologie and see if they have any headbands that are on sale.

I haven't read anyone else’s comments, but I LOVE the new cut! It looks stylish, mod and effortless. Very pretty. Love the longer side-swept fringe. I vehemently disagree that your facial features are too large for this cut. Utter cods wollup.

Now, if you’re after an edgier look, you need “straighter, choppier pieces” that don’t flip. Does that make sense? It’s a more “piece-y look”. That’s easy. Enter flat iron and a bit of goo. I have wavy fine hair that does not behave. I feel I can offer sound suggestions too. I like to put on the goo after flat ironing. Is that something you do too?

Maya, good for you for trying a new hairstyle! I think it looks great on you, but it may take a little while for your eye to adjust to it. I got my hair trimmed recently and my stylist cut it the way I wanted it, but I still didn't love it. It actually took about a week for it to kind of settle down and look the way I wanted it to.

Definitely experiment with different styling techniques and hair products until you find something you like. I know what you mean about wanting a messier look. I have found that when I have more layers in my hair that helps with the messiness factor.

As for hair products, I like Paul Mitchell's Spray Wax. It only takes a little bit and isn't too heavy for my fine textured hair. It adds a bit of texture and helps me mess it up a little bit.

I don't know why but I just can't seem to smile when I'm taking pictures of myself. If there's someone else there, it's fine, but when I'm alone I just can't do it (and I'm bad at fake smiles anyway).

This is taking a lot of adjustment in ways that I hadn't thought of. I keep trying to shampoo hair that isn't there anymore, and I used to have this habit of pulling my hair back as if to make a ponytail, twisting it around my finger, and then releasing it. I keep forgetting I can't do that anymore. Also, I used to wrap my scarf around my neck and hair and have to pull it out once I was done tying the scarf, and now I don't need to but I still go through the motions anyway.

Yesterday it dried naturally but with some help. I just ran the blowdryer over the top to speed up the process. Today I'm going to see what it's like when it dries completely on its own. Every day I'm going to try a new combination of things and see what works best.

Now I'm off to go through Inge's headband links, hehe.

I LOVE it Maya! And I strongly disagree: your features are definitely not too large for short hair. I was amazed at how your beautiful eyes and eyebrows are accentuated even more now (and I bet that bright smile from the NY photos will make it even more gorgeous;-)

Maya -- I think that the cut looks great on you and frames your features really nicely. You've gotten lots of good styling advice so I'll just say that not only does your eye have to adjust to the new look but your hair has to adjust to the new cut. I always feel that my hair takes 5-7 days to really settle in to a new cut, of course part of that is that I have to learn how to style the new cut. So despite your concerns about this style on you, I'll just reiterate that I think you look amazingly good in it.

I had a very similar haircut, and I couldn't make my hair flip out. It's weird because it always wants to do that with other styles. Shiny gave you lots of great advice about styling. Sounds like you're on the right path with the flat iron. Good luck! And get well soon.

I took Shiny's advice and dusted off my flat iron. It really helped. I don't even need product at the moment because I already got the definition I needed from randomly flipping out different sections. Unfortunately I slept in it (I have a terrible cold) so it doesn't look so great but tomorrow there will probably be pictures. I'm still not too sure about it but perhaps I just need to get over the shock.

I also put a ribbon on just to get an idea of what it will look like with a headband, and I have a feeling headbands will be my new accessory of choice.

Maya, I think it this length looks great on you! You just need to play with it and yes, you will probably need to find some product to work with as well. I can see the choppy layers in there and I think maybe the Aveda control paste is the way to go and like Shiny said - maybe blow drying with a large round brush to get some volume too. A good stylish should really work with you to find the right products to recreate your look at home. I think you look lovely with or without makeup and I don't think the cut exaggerates your features - let's see a smile instead of that dour expression!!

I like it but have been a short hair wearer for some time. Look at the Short Sexy Hair line for styling products too. They have a spray in Texturizer and something called Shattered which you spray in after dry to give a piece-y look.
Neither weigh down my fine hair.

Shiny, that is what it looks like air-dried. I came home and took a shower right after to see what it would do. I'm not crazy about it behind the ears because it just looks like I don't have a lot of hair when I do that. It's pretty short in the back. Maybe 5 inches? I'm not sure how short it should be.

I'm thinking of giving this a try (I use all Aveda products, if that isn't already clear):

http://www.aveda.com/templates.....D=PROD6054

It seems to be getting good reviews from people with fine hair. I guess using it sparingly is key.

I really think makeup might just be the key in this case. There is so much more emphasis on the face with short hair. I know NOTHING about makeup. At all. I'm going to feel like a n00b walking in the store and asking for help (Angie already knows this: I absolutely hate asking for help), but I guess it must be done.

I think it's cute - and I love the sweep bang!!! Really shows off your lovely eyes. How does it look tucked behind your ears?

How short is it in the back? I'm wondering if it's too long in the back, and if it would've worked better with more dramatic angle from back towards front, to give you more lift at the crown and more movement in the front. After much trial and error, and different hairdressers, I've learned this is THE secret with my own haircut. It's all about the angle from front to back.

As for products, my hair is *incredibly* fine and also quite thin. I have very little hair; it just looks like I have more than I do because of the cut. I also can't use products that are too greasy or heavy. But I have good success with Goldwell Mousse Wax. Try it!!! You need to use it very very judiciously, just a dollop... about 1/4 of what you would use for a usual mousse. I usually smash it into the back of my hair and rub it all around to get the messy bed-head look you may have noticed in my recent photos. Then with the tips of my fingers, I apply it to just the ends in the front - but I focus on the underlayers more than the top layers. The underlayers like to go piecey.

I also use pomades - you just have to use a teeny tiny amount, and just on the tips of the hair only. That's how you get the pieceyness. You kinda squeeze small sections of hair together, if that makes sense.

A flat iron can also come in handy - just flat iron and when you get to the last 1/2 inch or so of hair, bend your wrist outwards to get a little crimp at the end. You can flat iron the ends so they go in different directions too.

Also: my hair usually looks more piecey between washes, when it is a bit dirty. The first day after a shampoo it is more likely to want to go soft and smooth (and flyaway), instead of piecey.

Do you have a big round vented metal brush for blow drying? That will add a lot of volume too. I use the biggest roundest brush I can find. Blow dry the underlayers first, pulling straight out. Then blow dry the top most layers pulling straight up. For the back, bend over and blow dry that way.

One last idea: Try parting it more deeply and dramatically. Do you know how to make an assymetrical part? That would add some edge to it.

What I like about this cut is that you can play with it and do a lot. Tuck it behind your ears, flat iron it straight, do a dramatic part, an assymetrical part... I would even be curious what happens when you let it air dry naturally.

Ana, this is what it looked like after messing with it myself. I tried to make it more messy but it just won't work. I'm reluctant to use a heavy product because my hair is very fine and it tends to just get greasy and stringy when I put ANYTHING in it, even a lightweight mousse. The girl who did my hair advised me not to use any at all, but that is clearly not working for me.

This one sounded good but the top review on the page sounds like what will happen to me:

http://www.aveda.com/templates.....D=PROD5932

Wearing makeup was not a resolution but something I had been thinking about. I'm too lazy to do much, but I guess evening out my skin tone might help. I guess I'll add Sephora to my list of stops this week.

Recently I spoke with my stylist about the cute short choppy cuts that everyone is getting and she said you have to be willing to wear more makeup to counter balance. I'm not so sure you in particular need more makeup because you already have large and dramatic eyes.
I absolutely love this cut on you. I hope you will like it when your eyes adjust. It looks perfect to me. If your hair is like mine t won't do the choppy thing. I have had the razor cut and asked for the choppy look many times but each individual hair is fine in texture and it doesn't want to stand up and make a statement. Hopefully with the right products you can get the results you want. I do think the cut itself is beautiful on you. It is so less heavy, and pretty. You have many features that other women would die/kill for.

Maya, I'm at work and I'm also studying for my Calculus test this week, but I just had to chime in on this topic. First of all, I think the cut is great! To me, it looks very similar to the BR model cut you wanted. I have found that my hair never quite looks "right" until I get home and wash it and have a chance to mess with it myself, so don't give up hope yet. My hair is naturally curly, so I have to work to get it to be very sleek and lay down nicely. Your hair seems to be opposite--it's very sleek all on its own, so you're going to have to work a little to get it to do what you want. You might even need to invest in a curling iron to flip out the ends and make it more piecey. Get some texturizing cream or molding wax just for the ends of your hair. This will help give it the "choppy" texture you want.

Secondly, about having shorter hair and not feeling as pretty, or like your face is big, etc: I've found that I feel best putting on a little more makeup with short hair. I think having long hair, it's easy to overdo makeup, you know? I think having short hair is the opposite, it's easy to underdo it. Some people don't need as much makeup and it's a personal thing I guess. But I always feel better with a little more eyeshadow and possibly eyeliner. I also put on more blush that I did when my hair was long. I don't think I look overdone either, but if my hair were longer, I could do. Does that make sense? I know you're not currently wearing any makeup, but one of your resolutions was to wear more (I think)? Anyway, I would try those things first before you give up on the cut completely. I just love it on you, I think you look more grown up, but also still really fun and youthful. You don't look like a kid anymore, and I mean that in a very good way.

Well the deed is done. I'm not really crazy about it but I still need to play around with it more. I'm going to look for some headbands and Aveda hair potion this week and maybe that will make me like it more. I'm glad I did it anyway so at least I can say I tried it, but I just don't think I have the right face for short hair. I think my features are just too large and having short hair makes me feel like my face is under 2x magnification.

http://img.photobucket.com/alb.....G_1579.jpg

It's also not as messy as I wanted it. I'm hoping some product will help with that, but I specifically told my stylist that I did NOT want a sleek, sophisticated bob. I wanted it to be messy and playful, and I showed her some pictures. She cut it with a razor because she said that would give it the choppiness I was seeking, but it seems to have had the opposite effect. No matter how much I try to scrunch it or mess it up, it all just falls right back in place. I might grow it out for a couple of months, and revisit a different stylist to see if they can give it the right texture.

Well, at least I'll be spending a lot less time on it in the morning!
