Thanks for sharing, Texstyle.
I would say that for some, more than just being a lifestyle, fashion itself is a process of self-branding; the lifestyle needs an audience and in producing for this audience, you brand and market yourself in particular ways.

*smiling and hugging Denise and Diane*

It's an interesting perspective, and I was nodding along with many of the points.

There is nothing wrong with lemming or fitting into something mainstream. In fact, it can be sooooo right. I don't like it when people turn their noses up at the mainstream, nor do I like it when noses are turned up at edginess and eccentricity. Both lifestyle and style preferences are brilliant in different ways, and neither is more special than the other.

Fashion today seems to be whatever you want to wear, and however you want to throw things together. The problem is that there are so many choices that, without guidance from loving experts like Angie, most of us won't know how to put things together and achieve the looks we like and that best suit us and our respective lifestyles. You have to know how to put things together to create a style. Otherwise, it's just fashion.

Yes I thought of YLF too.

But I don't know, sometimes the lifestyle focus feels more exclusive. Like, not only do I need to be up on fashion (which is my pleasure, not a chore), but now to be "cool" I have to be all in-the-know about food, design, beauty, hair, music …

Or is it just the nature of blogging that inspires the lifestyle approach. More products to pitch that way. Aren't they all trying to be "it" makers -- be the ones behind the "it" face cream, the "it" song, etc.

Maybe I need to give Garance Dore more of a chance, but I really appreciate Angie and Greg's straight-forward, unpretentious approach.

Hehe, for me it's more that they are impractical for being at home with the hems dragging on the floor, as they always need heels of some sort...not slippers Otherwise I probably would give them a whirl. oh well

I have to admit I wonder sometimes how anyone can stand flared pants. I mean even back when they were popular in the 70's everyone was stepping all over each other's hems. I guess that's why the new cropped versions are said to be fresh.

Good point Tex, I have to keep reminding myself that I don't work in a corporate environment and don't need lots of handbags or to wear flared pants etc. etc.

yes rachylou, I think people want to belong to a group.

Diane - yes, that's exactly what came to my mind. But I couldn't help but thinking too, the lemming effect can be a good or a bad thing via social media - because we don't really know each others' lifestyles and habits all that much. So, for example, I do have to stop myself sometimes from getting caught up in an item of clothing I see that seems great on others, but often is not going to be right for my own lifestyle. Sometimes it is a quick fashion fix like the super cheap leather moto many of us scooped up for like $30 - I did wear it several times last year, but this year the winter weather was far too cold for such a short leather jacket so I'm not sure it's right for me.

I guess that's why I really like to try and follow those with similar lifestyles - casual, non urban in my case. That way I at least know that I'm not buying something that's way out of my daily grind.

Interesting. She's right, it's not just about the runway shows and trends anymore. I liked this sentence :

"Now that we’re all making our own media, we don’t really look at the big ones for inspiration anymore – we look at the people in our newsfeed And we take turns inspiring each other.

Like fashion communities."

Reminds me of how we are on YLF :)

I thought this brief post on Garance Dore was interesting to ponder...thinking about how fashion isn't just about clothes, but about lifestyle, activities, etc.
