Hi Jennell,

I have the same problem. Just yesterday I discovered a video on the Bridgette Raes blog that addresses this very issue. Bridgette discusses aging gracefully and states that older women, even though they may weigh the same as when they were younger, have a slightly different shape from much younger women. There are designers that cut for this shape, and she names eight of them. A few examples are Lafayette 148, Tahiri and Vince Camuto. Here's the link.

http://bridgetteraes.com/

Hope this helps!

do you shop at Beall's or Belk's at all? They strike me as too old for me, and I'm almost 44 but dress more like a 30 something if I'm honest.

Hi, Jennell. KKards asks great questions, and really, they cut to the heart of it. So ideally, we will need more info to help you out.

Most stores in your size range offer wearable pieces at any age if you know what you're looking for. The only items that I feel are pretty lacking at the moment are casual dresses with sleeves and sufficient hem length.

I provide top picks every week of very wearable pieces - most of which I have seen on the bodies of clients that vary in age, size, and body type. Those lists are a good place to start.

Well do I know that feeling of being overwhelmed in a department store! Sometimes it can help to go with a shopping savvy friend (if you have one) -- or maybe with a specific item that you need in mind.

Angie always says to start your style journey with a hair and specs and underwear update -- that is a terrific, confidence-boosting first step.

Next, maybe consider what you would like to wear. You mentioned that jeans and tees are not what you want to wear every day. What WOULD you like? Angie's MOTG or casual ensembles (on the blog) offer lots of options. Her latest is just one example.

Like you, I live a fairly casual lifestyle -- although my preference is actually for more polished looks, I can't get too dressy for my work-from-home life. My climate is quite different from yours (I live in Canada) but over the last two years, I've built a very workable closet of items mostly from: Nordstrom's, the Bay, Banana Republic, J. Crew., Club Monaco, and Zara. I do wear a lot of denim, but not every day, and my regular rotation of clothing includes casual skirts/ dresses, different kinds of pants and shorts, and non-t-shirt tops.

One thing that helps is trying stuff on. Going into the stores and just bringing a pile of things to see which manufacturers cut their clothes for your type of body.

You might also want to start with a body type identification here, and then read Angie's body type guidelines.

Good luck, and we are here to help!

jennell, when you say "older figures" is this because you are having fit issues? if so, what are they? that will help us fabbers give suggestions.
if the issue is styling, i agree with golden, i think its really less about the store and more about finding pieces that work for your lifestyle and style.
that being said, i find nordstroms has a lot of pieces that work for me, as does BR, the Gap, and White House/Black Market. i used to find a lot at AT and AT Loft, but not much lately, but that's probably me.

Banana republic has some good options. Nordstrom and Macy's, but I think it has less to do about the store and more about finding what is right for you personally in fit and style. Good luck and have fun!

Dear Angie:

Would you suggest Stores or clothing brands that cater to the "older figures" . I really do not feel old, but everything I see seems to be made for much younger women. I am 56, 5'4, average figure and would like to dress in a stylish manner. I would think there are a lot of women in my situation. When I walk into a department store I am overwhelmed with all the choices, yet most are geared to the young......

I live a casual lifestyle in Florida where I wear "warm weather " clothes year round. But I don't want to wear jeans and tee shirts everyday.

I would appreciate any and all suggestions:)

Jennell
