I prefer little shops in general! They're friendlier, treat employees better, and often have nicer things than big retail. Whenever possible I'll buy local produce, small restaurants, crafts from artisans, clothes from little boutiques, and use the mom and pop pharmacy instead of the chain. I also like to give back by donating to local organizations.

As part of a business that amongst other things deals with hospitality I am very aware that there are real lives here at stake. Although I am trying not to get into panic mode and alter my habits drastically regarding the at large community my biggest concern are the people who work with me in different capacities.
I think that we are all finding ways in which we can help and understand that we are all in this together.

Everyone has to do what is best for them and their situations. Full stop.

I am not in a "no-shopping-mode". My shopping habits are staying 100% the same for now. I feel absolutely desperate for retail and how those poor SA's in stores are suffering because of no fault of their own. So I am keeping the economy going in my own small but meaningful to me way - for as long as I can.

Judy, I live downtown, and like you, am supporting as many little businesses as I can in my neighbourhood.

As both of my sources of income are very much in jeopardy right now , I’m only buying groceries for the time being . I did go through with a scheduled hair appt yesterday but have no intention to venture into a mall or to buy anything , period . This heath crisis has really put things into even greater perspective . I’m worried for my independent retailer friends , but can’t see buying just to buy . If I had unlimited disposable income , then yes I would , but that’s not the case right now .

Yes to supporting local food banks etc. in our communities. The only reason I posted here on this forum about this was that people were posting about what they were buying here. I buy very little now that I am retired, compared with what I used to. But I still do buy things. My message was more a call to myself and all to notice, which I guess we always should be, that where and when we spend money has important impact. I'm noticing today...things change so quickly... that many brick and mortar shops and restaurants will be shutting down for a while, or go to appointment only, so how this is going to play out is very much unknown. We have very little precedent, if any, for to know how to help one another. I feel like I am very much on a learning curve!

Yes, good ideas all of them. I know a small business owner who is quite anxious trying to figure out how to stay open, pay staff, and pay his personal bills. I plan to go online and see if I can buy a gift certificate.

What a great idea. Next week will be hard. Both DH and I are in the most vulnerable group and have dear friend and relatives that are even more at risk. Everything...even the library and church..,,has been closed. The weather is cold damp and dreary. It is a great time to edit my wardrobe. DH wants to buy a free- standing wardrobe to clear up closet space. I think I just have too much and need to get rid of stuff ASAP.
We are still in a 4 season place but it is not as hot in summer...yet, and each year can be different. The dominant season has changed from hot summer to long winter.

We have had reminders from local businesses that if they don’t get supported now they might not be there when all this is past.A sobering thought of the impact on people other than just health.

i plan to continue to support my local businesses, as i am thinking forward to waiting to insure they are here when this event is over, as they continue to help drive economic opputunity.

Good idea, Judy. I like the idea of gift cards for local restaurants and businesses so we can support them in the meantime. I'm with Staysfit -- as much as I am tempted to practice retail therapy in times like this, I'm going to resist and divert what I can to helping people in my area who are put at further risk by the current situation.

Judy, I appreciate your thoughtfulness. I have not seen many small local shops with as nice an online site as in your example. It’s a good idea to support local small business. The web of ramifications of this event are complex and far reaching. My children attend colleges that are switching to distance learning, and my husband is a professor who is scrambling to prepare because his college is doing the same. Not every college student will leave their college town. Many of them rent apartments and can stay in their college community. Students in dorms are the ones who need to quickly plan for a new living situation. They are being forced to adapt at a time when many of them lack confidence in their self reliance. They will lose direct social connection and support of peers and mentors. My son’s program typically has a capstone project presentation day that draws potential employers from all over the country. Most students end the day with a job offer and confidence of employment after graduation. Plans for that event are suspended leaving an entire group of seniors at his college extra anxious about finding future employment. My coworkers daughter is a senior and also feels anxious to be without proximity to the job placement resources of her campus.

In my community, many businesses large and small, are closing temporarily or greatly reducing personnel and hours. This will lead to reduced disposable income. People are worried about making mortgage payments and having enough money for food, Public schools in two local counties so far have opted to close for a full month. A large percent of the children in these public schools receive free breakfast and lunch. Purchasing extra food for an entire month, unexpectedly, when already at the low income/poverty level is going to create undue stress. I am well aware that this is a fashion forum, and in generally agree that if possible, I would support small local businesses ahead of large conglomerates who are better able to survive the economic impact of such an event. However, if the federal and local government do not come up with a viable way to provide food to the children effected by school closures, my spare cash will be going to the local food banks, and to programs that will get food to the families most in need.

Judy, a great reminder that we are part of the community and to help those small businesses around us. I have been thinking similar thoughts and want to keep supporting my local gym, karate school, hairdresser and shops, because I know that people are freaking out and just staying locked away. I don't want to catch anything or worse spread germs, but I do think there is a way of helping the local community to keep functioning. It seems the economic fallout is what is likely to really hurt most people.

With all of our social distancing going on lately to contain the virus, smaller retail clothing shops are really being challenged. Especially in college towns where they have sent everyone home. I went online tonight to buy from a local shop that I visited near my son last fall in Massachusetts. The big retailers will probably survive all of this okay but if there is something you need that you can get from a small or even local shop online, now might be a very good time to help them out!

(Restaurants too...people are doing take out or gift cards for later use)
