Suz, the penny dropped when I realized that my spring needs are different from my summer needs despite the overlap. For one thing, I require a work wardrobe for spring, but I'm on vacation for most of the summer months. Doh!

Thanks, Thistle! I'm definitely moving forward with a new perspective.

shedev, a category system sounds interesting! What are your 10 categories?

Mo, I was tempted to cheat a little and "extend" the 24 items by not counting accessories, but I know I can get carried away with scarves and things like that. Plus I agree that 24 should allow for plenty of freshening up without going overboard, so I decided to play fair ;-)

MRL, I hope you find keeping a list as helpful as I have. And I hope you'll post yours when it's done. I love seeing what's on everyone's shopping list.

Coming back in to say I really think 24 items is a doable plan while still injecting plenty of newness into a wardrobe without going overboard. So excited for this!

Very well thought out plan. I also have a 24 for 12 plan, with 2 things in each of 10 categories and 4 wildcard items. I don't have exact items picked out but I do want my purchases to get me closer to my aspirational style.

Sounds like a superb plan. Sometimes things not working out the way we thought helps gives us a bit of perspective so when we try again we have a plan that better fits us. I think the 24 pieces works very well!

And how organized you are! I admire this level of planning. And how truly useful to know what pieces you need to make outfits work!

Wow, you are incredibly organized! This sounds like a superb plan. You can always adjust as needed. I really like your decision to divide spring and summer seasons. The needs can really be quite different (despite some overlaps) and because our spring is so short, I am forever forgetting that season in my own planning.

Your post gives me inspiration as I am planning a shopping list for the first time ever. Like you , my warm weather clothes seem more random and not as
pulled together as my fall/winter look. I like the idea of one or two neutrals and a limited palette of brights.

Thanks, Mo! I wouldn't have realized how badly the connector pieces were needed if I hadn't been inspired to take a look at what I have ahead of time.

Joy, experimenting with pastels sounds like fun. And I'm glad you mentioned grey jeans. I'm still new to wearing colored denim, and I hadn't thought about this color as an option. I have the same need for low heeled dressy black boots. They're on my fall list, and you've reminded me that I need a new metallic sweater to replace the silver one I recently purged... adding to my winter list right now. Thanks!

My "list" is rather vague for s/s. I want to experiment with some pastels, probably silky woven tees. I'd like some pointy-toe nude or metallic flats. A color like yellow or tomato red would also be welcomed. Maybe the perfect grey jeans.
For Fall/winter I'm still looking for replacement low heeled dressy boots in black. I also would like to find a great metallic gold top and brocade jeans on sale, and the perfect year found weight aqua blue jacket/blazer. Oh, and maybe a winter white coat. That makes 9 or 10 items for the year, but I'm sure to end up with at least twice that number.

Sounds like a smart plan to me! I hate the great pieces that don't always go in an outfit conundrum. Good for you for concentrating on connector pieces. It's not always fun, but if it makes the wardrobe work better, it becomes fun in the outfits magically coming together. Best of luck!

Last year, I tried the one item per month/twelve per year plan. I made a list of six items for spring/summer and six for fall/winter. That plan did not work out. I ended the year with 28 purchases instead of 12 (8 S/S purchases and 20 F/W purchases). In one of Mo's recent posts, we discussed a two items per month/twenty-four per year shopping plan. So, instead of six items for spring/summer, I've come up with six items for spring and six more for summer. I plan to do the same for fall and winter. I think 24 items is a more reasonable number for me. Basics (bras, undies, socks, and hosiery) won't count toward my total item count. I have a new replenishment plan for those items per Angie's recent blog post. Right now my only big exception to the item limit is belts. I need good ones, and will have to snatch them up when I find quality ones at a good price. This may add to my total item count for the year.

My biggest dilemma is that I have many pieces that are great on their own, but don't work well together. No wonder warm weather dressing is so hard for me. In prior years, I bought whatever was pretty, fit well, and fit within my budget with little thought to how it would work in my existing wardrobe. Therefore, this year I must focus on connector pieces to turn my mishmash into a cohesive capsule. My current warm weather neutrals are navy and white. My warm weather brights are purple, pink, orange, and yellow. For Christmas, I received a pink snake print clutch and a pink printed scarf that will work well with new and existing pieces.

SPRING
1. lightweight knit top (short or 3/4 sleeve, light in color)
2. orange tee (scoop or v-neck, maybe merino wool)
3. natural canvas flats (I need closed-toe warm weather shoes.)
4. pointy-toe flats for skirts and dresses
5. purple sleeveless top (to replace worn out workhorse top)
6. wrap dress (solid or printed) or denim shirt dress

SUMMER
1.metallic sandals (gold, gladiator style?)
2. gold boyfriend watch (I'm feeling inspired to wear more gold accessories.)
3. denim shorts (medium wash, Bermuda length?)
4. printed top (graphic black & white or tribal)
5. handbag (orange?)
6. fedora (I really really want one!)

Wild Card: something pastel (powder blue?) I don't wear pastels, but if I find the right item in the right color, I'm willing to swap it for one of my listed items.

I reserve the right to modify this list after I see everyone else's, especially Angie's :-)

I welcome your thoughts and suggestions.
