So nice to see how the year worked out for you! I'm trying to learn to be OK with most holes and HEWIs. Some, of course, must be filled because they're true necessities, but I'm learning that I make too many mistakes when I get too focused on the holes!

BTW -- the moment you no longer have to make sure your clothes are impervious to child-sourced stains, you have to start sharing your clothing budget with teens!

NSo nearly done with the year and this is where I stand...

1. Utility jacket or soft moto (not leather)—found a RATE overlapping black and grey felted knit lambswool at Benetton last week
2. Pants and relaxed/BF jeans, perhaps white—bought white relaxed skinnies and medium-wash indigo highwaist relaxed straight jeans, and a pair of linen wide legs in ivory; recently a pair of microcheck smart-casual straight-leg pants and denim jeggings (5 pairs there, so counts as a very good year here, even if not trendy!)
3. Full skirt—lined linen hi-low hem in ivory, and a pleated plaid (2 there)
4. Chambray shirt—still no luck, got a nice dark red-and-blue plaid for winter instead
5. Harem or slouchy pants—not much luck, though got a couple of lightweight ones, as they haven't held up as well as hoped (2 of them, beige-black and white-blue prints)
6. Fluid tees + mixed media knits—plaid-print woven short tee (coordinates with skirt to make a two-piece dress), navy tunic-length fluid tee, chinoiserie-print tank, botanical print long-sleeve in summer; quilted drop-shoulder zipper-detail ultramarine top, a woven and knit mixed media Orla Kiely-ish print batwing tee in shades of blue and white, and a lace-trimmed black sweatshirt for winter (7 so not a bad innoculation in this category)
7. Soft shirts (not crisp, possibly patterned or solid blue/grey)—ridiculously, no luck except navy linen blend so semi-crunchy and a mandarin-collared cotton so not the best shape for me (2 items)
8. Dress or three (must be nursing-and toddler chasing-friendly, so steer clear of straight-up sheaths)—LBD (score!), no luck with day dresses
9. Loafers or other slip-on flats for slushy walks, patterned or coloured—white and cobalt pointy ballet flats
10. Tan or cognac booties—no luck
11. Bag ditto—nothing I liked in my budget
12. Waterproof travel- and baby-friendly bag (grey/navy/print)—purple laptop bag! who knew?
13. Walking shoes for travel—alas, was black but a bit quirky mary janeish, so okay for now
14. Blazer/tux-type jacket (white or grey?)—again, nothing I liked that fit body or budget
15. Sweaters, zipfront or pullovers—welted fuchsia cotton sweater, one acrylic pullover bought in desperation but nothing that suited my taste or purposes in wool or tech fabrics (2 items, and big holes)

Essential basics to replenish and accessories to add (not needs or must-haves):
#blue, grey and black tights; purple?—skipped these again
#brown slim, brown wide, grey/ink slim, patterned slimmish belts—skipped again, alas
#statement necklaces, bib and pendant—hmm, the tot is not ready
# coloured thermal knits or oatmeal (I am not a neat dresser so this stuff can peek out)—magenta tissue-weight thermal t-shirt

Wildcards!
1. Tan sandals
2. Printed white and pink sneakers
3. Bone sandals
4. Bought 3 cheaper Indian tunics to partner old Indian tights and salwars that were languishing, but not happy with the quality at all (the nice ones I liked were not nursing or toddler-friendly
5. One long anarkali-style Indian tunic
6. Black stretchy pencil skirt

Did buy some warm nightwear and 3 pairs of socks which I don't count towards the total, as being too essential/basic to budget

So budget and shopping opportunities being scarce, this whole list actually went over the target at 33 items but many bare categories and underrepresented areas.

Must fill holes and stick to quality over quantity better next year.

Heh, my slush is the secondary OED meanIng of watery mud, Beth Ann. Though yes, plenty of the other kind in the higher reaches not far off. Delhi gets frost at times but no snow (yet).

But messy streets are normative here. And those are good questions!

1. Well, blue is my favourite colour and I find many shades work for me, so I chose the ones likely to be in stores because current. Grey is my less-harsh substitute for basic black and also relatively easy to find and easy to mix with other neutrals and colours in future; my hair growing greyer is a good reason to go there too. White... well, I have been afraid to choose it for years due to impracticality but always loved it. Oddly, of late, making the most of my wardrobe without much shopping has seen me wear silks and suiting around the house. I am gaining a better grounding In 'it is just clothes' now. Plum tones usually flatter me too. So those are my brights together with white for cheering up.

2. Current bets are...
(i) black knee-high boots
(ii) boyfriend jeans (maternity edition until I upgrade)
(iii) wine oxfords
(iv) dress shown above
(v) bronze mini-wedge sandals and ballet flats
(vi) grey pinstripe asymmetrical midi skirt
(vii) white, grey, black and navy t-shirts
(viii) lightweight floral summer jacket ... slight problem with it is the print is blue and tan, so not a perfect fit to palette
(ix) sleeveless denim shirt/vest
(x) charcoal knit peasant blouse
(xi) red slouchy-skinny jeans... this is a sharp extra accent bright
(xii) indigo/white hi-lo tunic

3. Lots of overlap with previous question: red skinnies and boyfriends, grey skirt but also pants, black merino cardigan, ivory knit top with lace insert and asymmetric hem, navy drapey cardigan, white and grey t-shirts, black/tan and white sleeveless knit tops, ikat-print knit tunic in wine shades, cobalt knit skirt and the oxfords. Last year's worn workhorses put out to pasture were bias-cut blue, red and black midi skirts, blue/green stripey soft shirt, grey/taupe/white floral t-shirt, red loafers with white trim, powder--blue empire-line top, navy/dusty pink/charcoal abstract-print drape front knit top and pale grey cardigan.

Flexible plans are awesome! I like the dress, too. It's sweetly feminine, but not too girly or juvenile, and you've styled it with casual flair.

I love the idea of a non-leather moto, and the chambray shirt would be extremely versatile.

A couple of questions:
How did you come up with your core neutrals/colors?
What 5-10 current items do you want to feature in future outfits?
What are your current "workhorse" items

I did a double take on "slushy streets." I'm afraid I sometimes let a "Bollywoods meets National Geographic" framework take over when I think of India as a semi-tropical summer paradise with nothing but enormous cities. Snow? Oh, yes, that's right. There are tigers.....and mountains! Sheesh. I need to travel more!

Asking for opinions/help in a separate thread but bought this dress.

Not a perfect 10 by a long shot, but sometimes potholes have to be filled fast to drive out dressed before you can practice PPP. (The wrap/surplice dress hole is years old here.)

Love this! I'm one of those "list makers" and a planner to boot. I like the selection of a color palette- very smart of you and I think the specific details next to your items will help you avoid settling for items that are almost what you're looking for. I'll be posting my shopping plan before the week is out. I'm aiming for 24 items, too. I've broken them down into six per season. Looking at your list, I see we have a few of the same items: dress, slip-on flats, tan booties, and a handbag (or two...or three).

Wow, that looks great to me too ! I like that you are doing a core color scheme. I started doing that 1.5 years ago and I LOVE it. You look good in blues. Leave a little room for berry colors too as add ones ! : )

Just an accountability post as 2014 promises to be a toughie. Wardrobe likely to need substantial turnover (changing shape and size hopefully plus high wear this last year-and-some). Yet the budget will be modest as larger portions are going to baby, home reno and travel.

The plan so far looks a bit premature as I don't have a good grasp of next year's trends yet. However, this is a start with room for refinement and wildcards.

I will be aiming for a palette with emphasis on grey, blues (ink, cobalt, powder pale) and white. Black I know will turn up with no trying and I will be careful with it. Accents should be plummy.

1. Utility jacket or soft moto (not leather)
2. Pants and relaxed/BF jeans, perhaps white
3. Full skirt
4. Chambray shirt
5. Harem or slouchy pants
6. Fluid tees + mixed media knits
7. Soft shirts (not crisp, possibly patterned or solid blue/grey) 8. Dress or three (must be nursing-and toddler chasing-friendly, so steer clear of straight-up sheaths)
9. Loafers or other slip-on flats for slushy walks, patterned or coloured
10. Tan or cognac booties
11. Bag ditto
12. Waterproof travel- and baby-friendly bag (grey/navy/print)
13. Walking shoes for travel
14. Blazer/tux-type jacket (white or grey?)
15. Sweaters, zipfront or pullovers

Essential basics to replenish and accessories to add (not needs or must-haves):
#blue, grey and black tights; purple?
#brown slim, brown wide, grey/ink slim, patterned slimmish belts
#statement necklaces, bib and pendant
# coloured thermal knits or oatmeal (I am not a neat dresser so this stuff can peek out)
