Rae, I look at fashion as art as well...though some of us are masters, and others are dabblers!

NicoleD and Joy, may blessings be heaped on understanding partners. I have one, and he even lets me mess with his wardrope, though I haven't got him into dark wash jeans yet.

Krishnidoux, thanks for sharing your therapist's wisdom. He sounds like a keeper.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to read this post. I'm news, and still finding my way.

What Jayne said! Spending less time in aimless shopping or even looking at a magazine for vague reasons and feeling
unsatisfied, and instead, getting more focused, so some time spent that way has a purpose and payoff to make morning rush easier, outfit satisfaction higher, feeling prepared for social events, having small happy moments during the day. Not just a hobby, but finding its " purpose" helps sort out keeping a balance with other hobbies and activities.

Uncanny timing! Yesterday I tackled this very subject with my therapist. I sometimes feel very guilty for spending "time and money on myself". I exposed to him what I was doing, how much I was spending.

He told me what I'm doing is VERY HEALTHY and IMPORTANT activity! He said that my spending was completely in line with the average woman, and that in fact many women spent way more. He made me see how this activity is part of asserting myself in the world, finding what was ME. He said that spending time and effort to choose the right thing would, of course, cost money, as any other thing that people do for themselves, like my DH who likes to collect war posters and read historical novels etc. but that I was doing it sensibly and logically.

I also told him about the YLF forum and how positive for me it was to read from women of all ages, particularly in the 40 + bracket, as it provided me with different models as I am myself advancing in age. He applauded that, and thought it was a very positive influence.

I so identify with this train of thought. In my past what I loved was shopping, which is not the same as fashion. Now I am more interested in actually having a style and looking good and ironically I shop less and think alot, read blogs alot and track my clothes alot. It has become almost work, but I do it because it is my current hobby that I am trying to do well. So your thread hits home!

A friend (who happens to be a composer) sometimes says: "Artists are the UNtalented ones."

Sounds counterintuitive until you understand that he's saying they are the people who persist, who work at their art, who do not stop working at it (and having fun with it.)

I think many of us subscribe unconsciously to the myth of artistic genius and pure inspiration. And when it comes to fashion, it's the same. We imagine that you either "have it" or you don't, and no amount of study and application will give it to you if you don't have it, and no work should be necessary if you DO have it.

Of course talent plays a role in fashion as in all the arts. But application is at least equally important. Thank you for this reminder!

Well said! My husband also refers to fashion as my hobby. I think of it also as my creative outlet and less messy than many I've had before, like trying to wash the dirt and burrs out of fleece so it could be carded and spun. He'd much rather I went to the mall.

Testify! I think of my outfits as my artwork, so I absolutely love the comparisons you made. Especially in this day and age, when it is so easy to display the "works" online instead of just wearing things in a vacuum where no one sees or cares. YLF is like an amazing gallery!

You know, we all have to spend as much time as possible doing what makes us happy. We only live once right? Not to say that's a lease to go out and run the CC up 10 grand, but it is the right of everyone to enjoy life. Tomorrow is not a guarantee.

There has been a posting trend of folks expressing a certain angst over the whole shopping activity ( on line, and bricks and mortar) as well as questioning their participation in this forum.

I sometimes also question the money I spend on fashion magazines, and sometimes the time I spend playing dress- up and wonder of there is something else I should be doing with my time.

LIKE WHAT?

Writers spend time assessing, writing, re - writing, thinking, researching. They use pen, paper, ink cartridges, and other resources. They consult peers, editors.

Artists spend time contemplating and observing, sketching, photographing, preparing materials. They use canvas, paper, paint, clay, metal, glass. They consult with peers, invite strangers to examine their work.

Athletes spend time formulating strategy, and training plans. They practice their sport, and cross train. They pay attention to what they eat, their sleep patterns. They consult with peers, coaches.

I do not believe that being interested in fashion, and caring about what you look like is really any different than amateurs with passions for the arts, sports, cooking, gardenin, what-have- you.

If I am doing my job at work, and my family isn't neglected, and my health and finances are not adverslely impacted, then I will not resent the 4 hours spent at the mall doing reconnaissance, but leaving empty handed. (Well the Teflon pan I needed doesn't count.). I will not lament an evening reading and participating in this forum, or watching a television show on fashion, or buying a fashion magazine. I will make time to play with and maintain my clothes, and grooming. I will budget money for these things as well.

And when someone at work says my colourful outfit brings them cheer, or my DH says I am looking particularly good, I will say " thank you" and know that I am FAB!
