I call it the boneyard boho --- you should try Kohl's clearance racks. There's something so sad about a flouncy top with a raveling hem jammed into a rack that's labeled "80% off."

Jackets, though --- that's sounds fab!

I'm looking for an afternoon concert dress and a dress for a wedding in August, but I'm strongly considering a skirt and a dressy blouse! So hard to find something that suits!

So sorry you are having so much trouble. I hope this search will one day be just an amusing story.
I also remember that you looked good in your backup outfit.
I had a wedding to go to a while back. I just couldn't figure out the right thing to wear. Since it was "just" my friend's daughter's, it was not as stressful as your search. But still...
Right before the wedding I picked up some items I had consigned that had not sold. I ended up pairing a barely there open long openwork sweater I had purchased in the interim with the dress I picked up.

Well I'm happy to hear that when the sales hit I should have plenty of boho pieces to look through! ^^

Dresses are tough, more empathy from me. If shorties like me find them all too short, there's some serious lack of length going around.

Janet, I too spent the morning dress shopping. I need something fairly conservative for an event. Like you I don't want anything too short. I came away with nothing. The only thing I'm considering, other than what's in my closet is this dress which comes in various colors and could be made more interesting with shoes and jewelry. All in all my experience was much like yours--discouraging.

I'm with you on not liking all the Coachella style!
Dresses are so tricky because you can't buy one e.g. in Size 6 Rectangle Shape; Size 10 IT shape and so on. And that's really what we all need. In addition of course to good lengths. I can't think of a business model for the brands we know to be able to offer a wider size range like that -- I know some of them have the straight fit, curvy fit pants, but it would be interesting to see it taken a little further. Maybe we need to set up our own YLF angel investor firm to support designers!

Janet, I feel your pain regarding event dresses. We literally did not attend a gala charity event a couple of years ago because I returned 4 dresses (too body con, utterly sheer, too clubwear hookerish, too grandmother of the bride) before giving up in tears. Plus, most of what was available was sleeveless or even strapless -- and this event was scheduled for January in NYC.

It's probably a mercy that I quit before I found a dress, because then I would have had to find shoes with a 1" or lower heel that did not look dowdy. Yeah, that's easy to do.

Well, don't be discouraged. I was helping my best friend find one last year, and it took many expeditions. We finally found the perfect one at Neiman's, on sale. It was quite a saga, and exhausting for sure, but it had a happy ending.

Xtabay, there are some really pretty dresses on there -- I looked a month or so, and just took another look in case there was something new. Unfortunately, many of those are either not right for me (spaghetti straps), or for the occasion (maxi or too evening). There was one I really liked (the V-neck floral sheath), but the reviews say it's sparkly, which I don't want for a daytime garden wedding. Bummer!

Una, yes! I hear you, girlfriend. Sadly, I can't even resort to shift dresses and show leg, because my legs just are not all that. Below the knee, they're fine, but hemlines above the knee are just all wrong on me. So sad. Biking and running have done a lot of wonderful things for me, but they don't change the basic shape of one's legs.

I think you have the right to be negative about our dress choices in the market - it's not your body! Dresses seem made for some imaginary ideally proportionate ratio - small bust, defined waist, hips (but not too much hips). I find all sheath dresses too tight in the bust, shoulders and waist and too large in the hips. They always look ideal zipped halfway up the back on me. I really only wear shift dresses for this reason and show my legs - but it would be nice to show some figure now and then.

That's a pretty dress, Angie -- I may try ordering it. I'm a little dress-fatigued at the moment after yesterday's experience. I'm not immediately drawn to the neckline and sleeves in the one you posted, as it feels a bit conservative to me, but I know I can alter the sleeves. I am also trying styles I otherwise would not choose, just in case something surprises me. I tried a very pretty periwinkle dress yesterday -- but it was fitted on the bottom and very blousy in the top, and it just didn't do anything for my shape. I think it was meant for someone less busty. Then there was a beautiful darker emerald lace dress (Reiss) that was obviously meant for someone with absolutely zero boobs -- I spilled out of it so badly all I could do was laugh. It just felt like everything that didn't seem typical middle-aged MOB was meant for a much straighter figure.

Laurie, I looked at JCrew right away because the bridesmaids dresses are from there, but nothing spoke to me. Plus the lengths are a bit short for my preferences and JCrew NEVER fits me properly.

I feel like I'm full of excuses why things aren't working and I apologize for that! I don't mean to seem so negative. I am just really demanding of a dress that I am going to be comfortable in summer heat that photographs well, and that I would actually want to wear again! On top of fit, flattery, and color/print requirements, it seems like a very tall order indeed.

Janet you are definitely not alone.....dress shopping seems like such a crap shoot and you can never predict which store/brand will have ones that work for you and which will not. That's been true for me for a long time, not just this year. Go with that $60 one you have....if it makes you feel fab then nothing else matters!

And yes the boho thing does seem a bit overdone. I wore it the first time around, when it was called "hippie" but I wasn't paying a lot of attention to fashion back then so I'm not finding it to be that much of a repeat now. Seems like yet another thing the fashion industry is pushing that not everyone is buying into.

Elizabeth, I don't think it's really worth it, since I have something that will work. I'm not feeling pressure to buy something new for the occasion, I just thought I'd see if there was anything out there while I was in NYC.

I tried on things from Karen Millen and Reiss (at Bloomies), so not exactly cheap stuff. For the prices, I would have to feel amazing in one of those dresses, and instead they made me feel fat, lumpy and frumpy. Funny that the $60 dress from a couple of years ago makes me feel much more fab.

I'm sad that others have been experiencing similar frustration, but it's a little reassuring to know I'm not alone or a total freak of nature.

The color schemes out now (in dresses in particular) are not floating my boat either, especially anything that would "go" for the wedding. Everything seems either too garish or insipid, with little in between.

Totally agree with everything you said Janet ! Having recently spent hours shopping to try and find a dress for a wedding I feel your pain. I wore something in my closet after finding nothing and was happy for it . Now I can spend that money on something else lol !
I am sure you will look great in whatever you decide .

My style shifts a bit boho in the warm weather but there is just too much out there and I feel it's just too over done for me. And even though I love dress shopping, I have to agree with you that the dress selection this year isn't the best I've ever seen. I usually have several dresses that I have to decide between but that was not the case for me this year. I just don't understand why dresses are so short? It's really frustrating. Luckily you have a back up plan dress.
