I also love Hunting Shopping! I'm usually 'hunting' for something specific though. It's addictive!

Oh, man, Thistle, yes. All that waiting, nervous checking that your size/color hasn't sold out, pretending you don't care, all while 'The Final Countdown' plays in your head...

I've started buying shoes on Amazon and they have this weird thing where different sizes are different prices because they're offered by different vendors, so sometimes you revisit your wishlist and overnight the shoe in your size has gotten twice as expensive as all the other sizes. It's hell on the nerves.

Diana: Yes --- perhaps we should have a new category --- maybe "Hunting and Gathering" or "Huntress Shopping." That kind of searching can be a bit like a game.

I have two types of "project shopping." One is the type you describe, e.g must replace dead bras or must find dress for event this weekend, and is unpleasant and stressful. However, I also tend to get obsessed with finding the perfect something, e.g the gold zipper boots, and will single-mindedly scour the whole internet and every store in the mall for it. Maybe it's just my personality, but I do enjoy that even though it gets frustrating at times. It helps that they're not usually items that I strictly NEED so I can take my time hunting for them.

I love the Schrodinger's cat analogy! Too true!

My shopping is mainly online, so I know this well. Also, the time between identifying a potential purchase and the time the store runs their regular 40% off sale.

Barbara -- If these ideas help you have more fun with fashion, I'd be so happy! I have a knack for sneaking in a little fun whenever I can!

Summer: I've still got a ways to go with my "project shopping!" The fly-by and recon styles of shopping are pretty closely related. And they definitely work best when someone is good at leaving a store without a purchase. Sometimes I take pics to remind me of favorite items -- that helps squelch the urge to buy that day.

Thanks for this post. It will change how I shop. I love the idea of taking one wild card into the dressing room as a way to see how new silhouettes, colors, etc.look on me. I also like the idea of adding a quick fun shop into errands-it might help me get those errands done.

Project shopping used to be my nemesis, too. I would get so frustrated by looking for something very specific that actually didn't exist outside my own head. I'm much more realistic - and patient - now, plus the huge choice available online means I know I will find something eventually that fits the bill.

I also do a hybrid version of your fly-by and reconnaissance shopping, which is actually my favourite: simply gathering ideas and seeing what's available and where. I do think it needs discipline, though. It would be all to easy to snap up everything that takes the eye! Luckily for my budget, I'm quite happy just to browse.

That one never happens to me, Bonnie! My DH is not much of a shopper (an understatement). Do you ever make a list of the of needed items, or wardrobe plans? I have one in the "notes" feature of my phone. If you stick only one glass of wine (hee), you could scroll through the list before you go into the shops!

Another type of shopping that I have often been guilty of: Going out with my DH (the enabler) for lunch and a glass of wine and then stopping by Anthro or a cute boutique and finding the perfect item. Works well for statement pieces - not so much for what I actually need.

Lucy Rose: Love the "Thrift Store Inahalation" shopping! I have no patience for thrifting, but at least it would be a fairly inexpensive way to go! You might find Peri's response interesting!

Peri: Yes! I find keeping the project shopping a little more general and open makes it more palatable! I am rubbish at shopping online, but I admire people who know how to make it work!

Laura: Had to look up the Cat reference, which was lots of fun! I think I slept through that day in Science class --- but it's an apt illustration of the period of waiting for an order!

I think I do mostly project shopping...maybe why I don't find shopping fun! Except NAS was fun, because the projects were general rather than too specific.

Or mostly recon type shopping done online. I do look through websites a lot and would find doing that at actual stores exhausting and not fun at all! When I go in actual stores it is always to check out something I saw online or in their catalogs...I never go to the Mall to browse.

There needs to be a term for online shopping - that interregnum between when you ordered an item and when it arrives, when you can imagine it being exactly what you hoped, or absolutely horrible. Kind of a Schrodinger's Cat of online shopping.

What an insightful post. You articulated something which I have long been sensing about shopping.

I feel similarly ticked off at "Project shopping". That is the worst kind, because you must perfectly match the image in your head with something which it is almost impossible to actually find.

I am guilty of Thrift Store Inhalation Shopping. This is when I go to Salvation army and buy everything. Without having tried it on.

Adelfa: The budget tends to make me shop more often, rather than less. This is rather perilous, I'm sure. I think I need to add another category: Strategic Shopping!

Lisap: Spontaneity will keep you young!

Jaileen: I saw a few of the map bags! Her leather was luxurious for the price. I guess I like Italian leather. Who knew! Perhaps you could troll ebay for a resale version?

Cheryle: Yep. We all know shopping therapy! You know, if it's in the budget, and you generally use and enjoy what you purchase, I don't see why it can't be fine in moderation! I went through a phase of buying a lipstick when I felt down. One day, I came downstairs with a drawer of 15 lipsticks and said to my DH, "Time to move from New Jersey, dear!"

I love Patricia Nash! Last winter they had a map theme and I really really wanted one, but I used what little self control I have and didn't buy one. But I wish I had.

Years ago I worked across the street from Houston's Galleria Mall. To go to lunch I had to walk through Lord & Taylor. So I shopped every single day. The Galleria was the best mall I'd ever been in.

For me, a well-functioning wardrobe requires well-honed shopping skills. Of course, I've found it helpful to learn the ins/out of individual stores. Angie is a great example of this -- her knowledge of Nordies benefits her clients and everyone on the forum. But, over the years, I've also become more aware of many different types of shopping. Here are some of the shopping styles I use --- the silly names help me remember my purpose while having a bit of fun with fashion. What are the "types" of shopping (mine or your own) that you use most often?

Fly-By Shopping: Yesterday, my DD and I visited our "upscale" mall. We had more focused shopping to do in Nordies and Soma (new undies, woohoo!), but we also did a quick turn --- a fly-by -- through one of her favorite shops, Altar'd States. We were in and out of the small store in 2-3 minutes, gaining quick inspiration from the displays, the predominant colors, and making a quick note of newer merchandise. Often, some I see in a fly-by will prompt a return trip on another day.

Reconnaissance Shopping -- A bit more in depth than the fly-by, this is my specialty. I engage in a lot of this sort of shopping in Autumn, because I use it to scout possible Christmas shopping. Doing "recon" means noticing, for example, that Loft has a great selection of pullovers this season. It means noticing that Macy's has a better pricing for KitchenAid mixers than Kohls does.

Restock Shopping: Yesterday's trip to Soma was specifically to restock my undies (love the Vanishing Edge). I did a bit of "Plus One" shopping in the store as well........

Plus One Shopping: When I'm running errands seem a bit mundane, I will allow myself a few minutes to, say, pore over just the handbag section at Macy's (I just discovered Patricia Nash), or to try on an item not on that day's list. At Soma, I found and purchased one of their "slimming tanks." Awesome, and practical for Autumn. I rarely buy while doing this kind of shopping, and it often involves accessories.

Refresher Shopping: This kind of shopping trip is most common during the end of season sales in late January and July. I set aside a bit of money for injecting a little bit of new energy into my seasonal dressing.

Project Shopping: My least favorite, unless I'm buying evening wear. This is the short of shopping I do when I need, say, a new pair of flare jeans. A week ago at Macy's, I went into the store with the purpose of finding a couple of pairs of casual pants (non denim), I did try on a few "Wildcards," but mostly, I scoured the racks for, and tried on, at least 8 pairs of pants.

Wildcard Shopping: I don't like trying on 10 pairs of jeans, or 6 denim jackets, although I'm a stickler for getting it right, so I press ahead. When I grab 5 pairs of pants, I frequently pick up one item that's completely different, and often something that would not be a typical choice for me. This is when I try a new silhouette, color, or trend.

I don't spend hours at time shopping, but living in the burbs of urban areas means that I can pop into stores often --- usually only a couple of stores at a time -- utilizing one or more of my shopping styles. I use versions of these shopping styles when I shop online, usually only for about 20 minutes at a time.

Tomorrow, I suspect a trip to DSW is in order tomorrow after lunch, and before the (ugh) grocery shop! That will most likely be a recon trip. Winter boot season is almost here!
