Perfect sense, Shiny. Thanks for the input. I think I'll start with XS, since those sizes are likely to go first, and then size up if I need to.

Yes, my shoulders are broadish... I think... I am an hourlgass that trends towards inverted triangle. I'm not sure if it's my shoulders, so much as my upper arms and the fact I'm a little ... rounded and soft and squishy on top (which is where I gain weight first).

But I don't have much problem with XS regulars in the shoulder area - at least when it comes to coats and jackets and blazers. I do often have issues with dresses and tops - depends on the style (for example sundresses designed for pretty pears - forget it!). I think coats and jackets tend to be cut a bit more generously, to go over tops. And that extra bit is all I need.

Then again, it's true that when trying on *petite* coats and jackets, I often go back and forth between the XS and the S or the 0 and the 2... either will work, but there is a difference in fit (see Tanya's recent thread, with her white jacket she just bought and she fretted about the size... it fits her fine, it's just a different look).

If it's a leather jacket, I definetly size down because leather does stretch over time. Jackets in general tend to stretch, because you don't wash them as often as you do tops, so usually I talk myself into the smaller size - unless it absolutely doesn't fit over my chest!!! (which is another issue). Or unless I want to wear it over jackets, in which case, I shop wearing a jacket, so I know it will fit over.

Does that make sense? Late here... I've been working non-stop all day on a project that was due, and now I'm vegging with a glass of wine and YLF and trying to unwind!

Thanks for the advice, Angie. I think I'm probably safer sticking to petite sizes, especially since I can't try on before ordering. I'll keep looking...

Deborah, thanks for the tip. I would love to do vintage shopping, but I live in The Middle of Nowhere, Kansas, and we have no vintage shops near here. I am hoping for a big shopping trip to Denver sometime in the next year or so and may scout out some vintage shops there.

Shiny, I hear you on the sizes and not waiting for sales. I *promise* to buy The Coat when it is available in my size without waiting for a sale. Shiny, you have broadish shoulders, right? Do you ever have problems with the XS being too narrow in the shoulders? That is always my worry with ordering XS without being able to try it on. But I think as sizes migrate upward, I am really more of an XS than I used to be.

Becky, you're my height right? If you plan on ordering online, I would really encourage you to stick to petite coats.... unless you can try it on in the store first. That has just been my experience. Yes, I can sometimes wear XS regular coats but often the torso and where the waist hits just doesn't work out and would require too much tailoring (more than just sleeve and hem length - major alterations all over).

There are exceptions, of course. I will say that I had luck with Elie Tahari regular XS this past season - no tailoring required. But that brand is not cheap. Still, I will be checking out their coats this coming season. Of course, I tried it on in store first!

One tip: get in there early and don't hope for a sale. :-(

Seriously... the XS regular coats go FAST. That's why you never ever see them at discount places like marshall's. If you find a regular-sized coat that fits and you absolutely LOVE it and it is perfect, buy it - do NOT wait for a sale. Because it will be gone.

Vintage isn't a bad idea... people were smaller in the past. And, I have found clothes in second-hand shops that were already tailored. Just takes a lot of digging and patience.

Becky, have you ever thought about shopping vintage? I have 5 vintage coats (one spring, the rest winter) and I didn't pay more than 45$ for any of them. You would have to enjoy the process of the hunt instead of wanting them in your closet yesterday, but there could be some good buys out there in mid July. Mine are all between thigh and knee length. The cuts are superb, the arms fit well...they all have excellent style. You NEVER see yourself coming, and savy women always want to know where you bought your coat!

Sorry Becky (sad face). Means there’s a better one out there with your name on it.

Regular coats with belts probably won’t fit your petite frame. The torso measurement is too long. But regular coats without a belt could work. You can tailor length and sleeve length really well. You can’t tailor torso length and shoulder width successfully.

I like the length of the coat on the model. It’s versatile. Shorter coats are less versatile.

Angie, I frequently purchase non-petite tops, especially short-sleeved and sleeveless (at least half the time, I would say). Perhaps this coat with do with a hem in the sleeves? Looking back on the overall length, this coat would hit me about knee length, which is longer than what I perceive to be ideal for my height. I like the spot it hits on the model. But then, I wouldn't have considered DB without your input, so what do you think about overall length?

Consider DB styles, Becky. I have a barely 5 ft client who looks wonderful in DB coat styles (size 4). I also have a 4ft 10 client who has an incredible little DB’ed red coat. She has virtually the identical body type to you. While a SB coat is elongating and forever flattering – don’t underestimate the power of the right collar. Keep them revere for elongating and slimming purposes.

Quite right Ana.

http://youlookfab.com/2006/12/.....lack-coat/

I do not encourage a black WOOL coat. That look is tired and hellishly impractical. A black coat or trench in microfiber, washable sateen or a poly blend is great. Suede and leather are nice too. If you’re hooked on the idea of a black wool coat, get a false plain instead.

Just want to put in a plug for Bloomingdale's. I noticed last year that they had a pretty good collection of petite winter coats online. The store near me didn't have that much in petites, compared to online offerings.

Also I think you can go into their Sales section and still find petite winter coats from last season. For example this one:

Angie, I would like a single-breasted, tailored, faux plain coat that falls mid-thigh or so. Of course it would have to be petite since my arms are so short. Does that sound like what you would recommend for me? Alternatively, I'd love red if I don't find the right faux plain.

I suspect you need to shop in the petites department for coats Becky. Does that make sense? Nordies usually has a wonderful anniversary sale collection. On-line shopping starts on 15th July. Do you know what you’re looking for?

I am just bumping this up so that Becky can get some answers :)

I believe that coats start coming out in September, but Angie will know for sure.

Nordstrom's upcoming Anniversary Sale was mentioned on several other threads; does anyone know whether there will be a good selection of winter coats (I saw a few in the catalog San linked to), or does the full selection come later in the season? I will be shopping for a new winter coat this year (online, of course, since that's pretty much my only option ). I did shop last year but never found anything that met my requirements. Why is everything double-breasted??? I guess the bottom line is, when is the best time to shop for coats (for selection)? And where best to shop for petite coats?
