Hang in there. You'll find your pant. I did, by happenstance, about five years ago, and when I realized I'd lucked into the holy grail of pants, then found Aritzia had discontinued them. Oh Oswald pant, how I love you.

So I'll suggest you take a look at Aritzia for pants, specifically the Wilfred and Babaton lines that use the bi-stretch Italian fabric. All of my non-denim pants are from Aritzia, and there's not a loser in the bunch. I find jeans a lot harder to fit, because they all tend to bag and sag on me. Even the Rag & Bone Dre jeans that quite a few Forum members have and like, are prime offenders for me in bagging and sagging. It's pretty dispiriting. But I keep slogging onward.

Good luck!

Thank you both for the commiseration and pep talk, Katerina and Sterling! Sterling I will hang tough, secure in the knowledge that my jeans are out there! And Katerina, great reminder to keep my mind open to something else that may not be my holy grail, but that is perfectly fitting and perfectly useful as well.

FWIW, in case you ever try Express slacks (which also come in Long), note that the size can vary a bit from pair to pair, even in the same style, fabric, and color. It is also a place that is always running sales/coupons so you should never pay full price. But it is also a mall store so you can always test ahead of time. Quality is not as good as Talbot's, but the price point is lower.

Argh. I know this is Sterling's thread but I just need to vent briefly on the topic of shopping for fit. Y'all, I ordered FIFTEEN pairs of jeans. NONE of them fit. I am...feeling rather demoralized at the moment.

Thank you, ChrisM. I hadn't thought to try NYDJ yet. To avoid discouraging myself, I have been going to the mall one day per weekend and shopping principally at one retailer. Breaking this project down into itty bitty steps has helped me stay focused and removed a large degree of the frustration and indecision. I will certainly try NYDJ before I am done. I am looking for a lighter-summer-weight bottom right now. They are just starting to appear in my stores.

I am 5'10" (or 5'9", depending on whom you ask) so I need longs as well. They ARE hard to find. I think in the past, I compromised and settled for the wrong length. I am not willing to do that this time.

Thank you, Krishnidoux. It is so nice to have your support. I have to admit that taking a deep dive into my closet has been enlightening. I am currently washing and putting things away for the season, so there is yet a second and third opportunity to really evaluate each piece.

Lynn -- what a fabulous suggestion!!!!!! I will certainly consider it in the future. I will reach out to you for fabric suggestions. Thank you so much.

Thank you for sharing your experiences, Sterling. I love the IDEA of Talbots, but have yet to get a good fit from enough of their styles to shop there regularly.

Like some of you, I am taller than most, but not a "tall" because I am not over 6' (5'10"). I prefer "longs" to "talls", but "longs" are hard to find. I am also fairly straight through the waist/hips/thighs, so no curvy for me.

Have you looked at NYDJ? NYDJ Samantha straight jeans/slacks' inseam in their "regular" fit runs about 31", so they are a good length when I wear flats. I don't wear skinnies, so these are a slim alternative that works. I have also found that the Theresa trousers are long enough (about 34" inseam) to look good with boots, moderate heels and clogs (sorry, I can't help myself. Love me some clogs). In NYDJ, I size down as they suggest. Might be a smidge snug at first, but the recovery is good. Fairly high rise though . . . at this point in my life, that's OK by me.

I get it if you say that NYDJ aren't dressy enough. I can get away with a little more casual look for my office - I just keep the top looking polished and it works for me.

Love reading about your experiences!!

Thank you for taking the time to chronicle your quest. It is very informative and also inspires me to take a good honest look at some of my own pieces. Those pants look fantastic, good for you that you have identified what was important for your body in terms of fit. So crucial.

Such a bummer about the Talbot's pants- so disappointing. If their fit was good it might be worth trying another fabrication.

I am so glad the WHBM pants seem like they are going to work. That must be a relief. Kudos to you for not excepting "just good enough". That can be so tempting when you are feeling tired and frustrated.

I am going to toss out an option for you if pants are a continual frustration and you are not able to find RTW that you feel satisfied with. You might want to consider having your pants made. The American Sewing Guild can usually give you local referrals. It likely will be more expensive than RTW, especially for the first pair that will require fitting. However, once the initial fit is done actually making the pants is pretty easy. If you decide to go this route I can give you resources for good fabrics.

Thank you for stopping by, Delurked. Your suggestion was exceptionally helpful (helpful at a time I was really feeling down and depressed).

I bought "regulars" in the store because the sales staff felt the rise would be too long for me in "longs" or "talls." I really like them a lot.
Because I liked them so much, I went to their website this morning and ordered several more pair in "long" for comparison purposes. I also ordered one pair of jeans in "long" to try them on.

I have been slowly evaluating all of the bottoms in my closet and, depending on their fit, I have been culling them as needed. So I found these pants at just right time.

What a bummer about the Talbot's pants! I'm glad it seems the WHBM ones may be a feasible option.

Have you looked at Boden? Angie and others are raving about the quality on another thread.

Test wearing is so important for EVERY pair of pants! I recently bought a pair of lounge pants, tried them on briefly, and cut the tags off because they seemed fine. Well, when I put them on again I found that as soon as I started moving around they rode up in an uncomfortable way (basically, I felt like my sweatpants were performing a gynecological exam. Not a feature I need in my loungewear!). Argh. Well, it was a learning experience for sure.

Had to pop in to say - I’m glad it looks like the WHBM works. It’s a good idea to put the one pair through their paces before duplication. Also, did you end up in their regular length then? It’s always an option to check if the online style has a long. I’ve worn both from them, but in the last year have gotten longs in everything.

I do think Colette may fare better with the wool version of the Talbots pants. Kind of a bummer that they aren’t a winner for you. Hopefully she can report back with how they do after a couple hours.

A few years ago I found Eddie Bauer pants much the same. Started well, but ended a hot mess. Glad you are being so diligent about fit. It will serve you well.

That’s a bummer! I picked up the Chatham in wool, based on a fabber’s recommendation, but haven't put them through the testing like you did. Now I think I need to do that before I hem them. I’ll be so disappointed if they fail because the fit is a dream for me...they actually fit my calves and I was able to cross black slim pants off my list. Wondering if you shouldn’t at least try the other styles on before returning just so you know how they fit for future reference.

The Talbots shipment arrived yesterday. I was beyond thrilled at the prospect of having well fitting clothing to wear to work ... again. The fabric, color, fit, and length were perfect.

I decided to wear one pair around the house (with the tags on) to evaluate comfort. Imagine my disappointment when after one hour (just one hour), the pants had a wrinkly, tired look to them.

Since my plan was to make these pants the backbone of my wardrobe and wear them on repeat until my weight stabilized, I immediately realized these pants would not work. I was so disappointed, but Angie taught me to use self knowledge and be patient.

Today is Sunday, I will be returning all of the Talbots items as soon as the store opens. Six pair are going back (the credit card will thank me). I only tried on the one pair, but the fabric is the same across all six pair. If one pair was all wrinkly and tired looking, I assume the rest would be as well. I don't have the time or energy to try to make them work.

Onward.

Very nice progress. Fingers crossed that the Talbots package comes soon so you can try everything on.

I too often need longer inseams and frequently try on stuff in store for fit and general style/fabric assessment, then order the talls online later. I do this with Talbots, BR, ON, AT and Loft a lot.

Sterling, I admire your persistence. I hope to emulate it. I have been meaning to place an order for jeans at h&m (the styles I want to try are not available in store). But I notice myself putting it off. Hm.

Best of luck on your outing this weekend!

I'm still waiting on the pants I ordered from Talbots to arrive. Although they are in my city, there is no indication they are out for delivery.

I decided that on Saturday I will visit White House Black Market. I will try on the pants that Delurked recommended. I'll again talk with the sales staff and explain the situation and ask their assistance.

My goals remains the same. One pair of black and one pair of navy well-fitting pants. Based on the comments on this Forum, I am hopeful that White House Black Market might have something for me.

A sort of desperation is starting to develop, but after reading posts on the Forum, I am attributing that desperation to the month of February and resolved to take things slow and steady.

Shopping for well fitting pants can be very frustrating. But once you find them it is so wonderful. When I was working I had a couple of go-to brands for dressy casual trousers. I would buy them up in black, brown and whatever colour they came in.
The Talbot pants look promising. Very versatile for styling.

While I do understand it could be disheartening at times, I'm sure your quest for the perfect fit is immensely useful and instructive! (Both for you and for us other fabbers, by the way - thank you for sharing).
You already found six candidate bottoms, hopefully they'll be perfect. Tops may be easier to find. :)

This sounds like an excellent beginning to creating a well-fitting wardrobe!

As far as ON goes...I often don't like the feel of a lot of ON stuff against my skin. Since ON is a cheaper retailer, the fabrics often aren't as high quality. I'm guessing that the Talbots pants will feel better than anything you could have gotten at ON.

Finding what is a good fit for bottoms just takes time and a lot of shopping around so that you learn your body's quirks. Like others mentioned, sometimes rise can be an issue. I bought a pair of misses' jeans from J. Crew once (rather than the petite size), and after several hours of wearing them, I couldn't stand how they were digging into my hip bone. Apparently the misses' rise hits me at just the wrong spot--the 1/4 inch difference in the petite rise is apparently necessary for me, at least at J. Crew. But at other retailers, I can sometimes manage a misses' and not a petites' and not have any issues. It's a matter of how each retailer designs its pants.

Then there are the "curvy" and "straight" cuts to deal with. I often feel like I'm smashing my booty into jeans, so I sometimes experiment with a curvy cut, which has more room in the booty and a smaller waist. These don't often come in petite sizes, so I have to be very careful about fabric wadding up in the crotch area because the rise is too long. That, in fact, is something you might want to watch for as you assess your pants: What is happening in the crotch area after a few hours' wear? Is it overly baggy? (That's usually what happens to me if the pants are not a good fit.)

Sterling, I hope the Talbot'strousers work for you. Talbots has been crossed off my list because nothing fits me. It must be bad for me to be able to tell. Even knit tops. The quality seems better than much retail is right now.

Well done on doing some groundwork. Another thing I’m discovering with pants is this:
It’s almost impossible to get the perfect
Pant- however if you have a pair just slightly larger than you would like then wearing it with a slightly more tight fitting top can balance it out. And vice versa, if the pants are slightly more snug than you wanted, they can look great with a looser top. Of course, keep going with your quest for the perfect universal pant! But I find using these tricks helps me work with my less than perfect fitting pants.
Oh and one more trick- if both top and bottom are a smidgen loose doing a loose tuck-in can give some semblance of proportion.
Good luck with it
