Yeah true about the quality of their tops - I dont mind for a small wardrobe filler and the fabric on the top I brought is not too bad. If I get through to Autumn with it I'll be happy.

Been searching around and found some cute tops online:

Theresa seems like you are reading my mind on this one!! I have this week off work - yay! - and plan to spend one day scouring the stores looking for options. Tops only! I will not be sidetracked!! From past experience I'll be lucky if I find one top, but I'll let you know if I see anything promising!!!!

Thanks for the suggestions girls.

I'm really trying to avoid all the cheaper quality clothes (I've had similar issues with VG/Temt etc tops as Megan) now - I must admit that clothes are no longer destroyed so quickly now the girls are older, and I'm really determined to get the best I can that will last for as long as possible.

Karen I have a few patterns, but I'll have a look at that one too - the more the merrier in my pattern box LOL

Valley girl's quality is generally AWFUL. I have a couple of short sleeved sweaters from there and within 2 washes (gentle cycle, cold water) they were coming apart at the seems

Ladies I was in Valleygirl today (returning 2 t-shirts because I've become bored with knits and want more wovens now!) and they have some really nice summer tops. I brought one in a navy floral print that I think would be flattering for most shapes, straps thick enough to cover bra straps and has some shirring at the bottom hem to keep a nice shape.

Theresa I can recommend the basic tank pattern I have used before if you're looking for a pattern - it's Simplicity 2593.

Hey There!

Since your tops are probably like mine and only last one season given the amount of wear and tear they get, have you considered Crossroads? There seem to be quite a few tops here and some of them are quite reasonably priced:

http://www.crossroads.com.au/Home.aspx

They often have great promotions as well. Good luck in your quest for the holy grail of decent, reasonably priced and flattering casual tops!

Shana thank you so much for those links!!!!!

I had a quick look here before I went shopping today (to be sure I was on the right track!), but found precisely nothing that was sleeveless, woven, print or even suitably embellished

After reading Tam's comment about sleeves though it occurred to me that I did need at least one with sleeves for the days I'm out and about in the sun (which is fairly frequently actually!).

So, today I managed to find a plain white button through (will post a thread on it soon) at Just Jeans.

Karen there's no Jag or Esprit up here so I'll have to see if they have an online store... I think that preppy kind of store is what I'm looking for... Oh I forgot to look in colorado today - but their colours lately haven't inspired me at all.

I've decided shopping in Australia just plain sucks when you spend so much time here admiring the variety in the US LOL

But, whilst at Spotlight buying some fabric for some new dresses, I did pick up 2 pieces of fabric to make some tops out of, so hopefully if I can get those made, I will be ok!

I think you're on the right track. You could also look for some plain tops with some embellishment. Maybe a slight ruffle, pintucking, a bow or other type of detail. Prints might be a little less versatile (though you should have both!). Here are some ideas from ATL & J Crew (though I know you don't have these stores in Oz):

Theresa I am in the exact same predicament as you, so I'll look forward to hearing what you find. As well as sleeveless, I would like to find some short sleeved tops though. On some days I can't be bothered going sleeveless cos it means I have to put sunscreen on my shoulders. Lazy I know.

Please do post what you find. Tops are always my #1 wardrobe struggle.

I've really become aware that my wardrobe is very lacking in the casual tops department.

So, I'm going to have to do something about it!

But I need some advice one what to look for...

I think I would prefer sleeveless woven's in a natural fibre as they are much better suited to my hot humid climate, and I think they would be good at bridging my desire to dress up, but not so over the top that I stand out too much at school (I'm ok standing out a bit like I do now, but can't go too OTT!).

And something that can be worn under cardi/jackets etc in cooler months.

But I'm not sure if I should look for plain, print, textured or otherwise embellished?

These tops (I'm thinking 3 in absolute total), would be worn
*dressed up with jeans for nights out
*with black or denim shorts
*with my white, turquoise or beige skirt.

So seeing as they'll mostly be worn with plain bottoms in blues/whites/black, I thought perhaps prints would be good?

I am hoping to get a bit of time tomorrow to have a look around, so I'd really love some feedback as to if I'm on the right track etc! And I'm off to read some of Angie's blog posts on casual wear...

As usual I'm no doubt overthinking this LOL so thanks for all help!!!
