I wouldn't describe my behavior as starve and binge mode, but it definitely has some ups and downs. I also think the retail cycle and sales have a lot to do with affecting my shopping habits
(items come and go, sometimes if you need a certain seasonal item or specific style that's on trend, you have to grab it before it disappears). I think I got better over the years, especially in the last two years.

Unless I'm on the lookout for something that really excites me, it's so peaceful NOT to shop right now. I'm not participating in SYC or any shopping ban - it kind of happened naturally. I'm saving for things to come, hee.

I don't tend to shop the sales at all as my size is rarely available or I just don't like anything enough to want to buy it. However I do go through my clothing budget very quickly after payday and then spend the rest of the month not shopping at all.

I do spend an unnatural amount of time window shopping and looking at clothes online so I know exactly what I want from my clothing budget.

I had the same problem, but I'm trying to control myself because on sales the temptation of buying something that's it's only OK just because it's cheap is big!

I have been feast or famine-ing this last while (and to some extent for years) but not really in the same way as you.
I can't get to shops easily (owing to three young children) and don't live in a major city with a wide range or shops anyway. I also have a limited budget so I think pretty carefully about what I want but then can spend it at times quite quickly - a few weeks ago I spend my entire summer budget (having basically not shopped since July last year) in one day, when I was able to have a day in the city and without kids. Some of these were on my list, a few were just great bargains.

So occasional shops don't have to mean going crazy! If that is the say you tend to operate, maybe just go with the flow - just try and plan for the next "feast".

PS I am back into famine mode now. One day of shopping HARD was enough to put me off for awhile and that I need a break.

PPS I am aware that my winter shopping, which is supposed to include some much bigger items - heels, a coat and a jacket - may need more time to get right.

I do this too - I posted the other day about feeling compulsive about shopping at the moment. It comes and goes . As long as you stay within your budget I don't think it's the end of the world, but if it bothers you...

Sometimes the *stores* force you into feast or famine somewhat; the sales seem to be cyclical and so are the things available, as far as styles, colors etc.

One of the reasons I'm pacing myself this year- giving myself a budget and a challenge. I think it will be fun, and I should end up spending a whole less $ overall.

Time will tell hey!

Oh yes - I do this too! I attribute it to addictive personality traits - its just like an alcoholic - they can't just stop at one, they can't drink in moderation. Well, I can't shop in moderation - and its crazy making because I end up with a lot of pieces of clothing/shoes/purses that don't go with anything else - and so I always feel as though I need to continue to shop in order to bring some cohesion to my wardrobe. Right now I am SYCing - and I'm having the same experience that MaryK is having - it is just soooo peaceful - as well as enjoyable. I have some clothes in my closet that I LOVE and I had never given them the time that they deserved because I was always shopping for the next best thing!

I'm a GIANT feast-or-famine girl. I can totally relate. The past 3-4 months have been a gigantic binge, and right now I am SYC-ing so I'm in "famine" mode, which feels strangely peaceful!

How about a three day waiting period before you buy? Or take your monthly clothing budget and divide it up weekly. Say you only allowed $40/month. If you saw a cute item at the beginning of the month, you need to wait until the correct week in which you can afford that item. Either way, you are making yourself wait and not get caught up in the "want it now" syndrome.

Does anyone else have this problem? I can go months without shopping, but then I'll see an ad for a sale, get drawn in, and end up having a week or ten days when I go clothes crazy. I think my wardrobe would be better if I shopped regularly and moderately, buying, say, a well-considered piece or two every month. But I don't know how to stop my starve-and-binge habit! Any advice?

PS. My recent binge has been on casualwear at Lands End Canvas--I think a lot has been snapped up already, but check it out if you need high-quality basics!
