"I'm not headed for D.C. to crack fat cats." Me neither! LOL

Don't give up, Rachy! You're probably right that more wool will pop up later. I remember when I was trying to find colored skirts at the end of winter (to get ready for sprint) I couldn't find a darned thing. Black and gray as far as the eye could see.

Haha, Angie! I should say that to myself: chin up! chin up! LOL. I should go into Express, you're right. I like Express. Never thought about looking for a plain black skirt there, tho, for some reason. Maybe because my last skirt from there was hot fuchsia.

christieanne - you are the second person who has said *Saks* to me. I think I have to take it as a sign. Also, funny enough, I got a (not plain) Tahari skirt at Ross two days ago!

bj/Ana - Classiques Entier is new to me. That's motivating. I'll check them out!

J. Crew, Banana Republic, Ann Taylor, Theory - I strike out a lot in these stores. I think the thing is, I need to save up on energy and check them out at Valley Fair or in SF. If only I could bring my dog in!

The new NM - I went there and perused the aisles and i can see what you mean. Even the shoe department is that way. I think they are trying to set themselves apart from the "others".

JCrew may be your best option or Nordstrom at Valley Fair or SF. How about Saks in SF? I have not been in there for a few seasons though. Theory or Tahari depts at Macy's Union Square are quite large. By end of July, just when we get some warm weather, all the fall clothes will hit and we will complain that there is nothing but black pencil skirts in the stores

I'd look at J. Crew, Banana Republic or Ann Taylor for good basics. I also second the suggestion of Classiques Entier. Also, have you looked at Elie Tahari or Theory? They often have good "work" basics available as part of their lines.

Thanks for the tips, guys!

I did find 4 black skirts to try on in Nordstrom, but only a couple were actually wool and all were just not quite right. I should go to Nordstrom in San Francisco and J. Crew too while I'm at it. Maybe next month I can swing a trip.

Catalog shopping would probably solve many woes for me, but I can't receive packages at home because my building is gated and locked.

I hear you, Rachylou. Finding specific items can sometimes be really hard.
I recently got this black J. Crew pencil skirt. No special design details, but a beautiful skirt in a beautiful fabric. This is a longer length, but I believe they have a similar skirt that is around 22 inches?

classiques entier is a good bet. they usually have a wool knit or woven black skirt every season.

I sympathize! It does seem like the showy bold stuff is prominently displayed everywhere but the nice basic tailored pieces are hard to spot. Like Suz I think it creates so much visual noise that I can't even concentrate! I just end up wanting to flee! That is why I have been doing more catalog shopping. I have more time to think and plan.

I often feel like this in department stores, too, Rachylou. I think it IS possible to find basics, but it's hard to see them amid the competing "show pieces." And for me, that can be so much visual noise that I can't think straight.

So I went shopping this weekend. A new Neiman's opened and they allow dogs... I have been hoping for a good, plain, all-season wool pencil skirt in black. Emphasis on plain. I know it's probably the wrong season, but I felt sort of bummed out because it seemed there wasn't anything in the store of the "good clothing" variety. Yes, crammed to the rafters with designer stuff, but everything was of a "show piece" nature. I couldn't find the grounding basics, the things that serve as a foil for one's focal pieces.

I feel more and more like this when I go into stores these days. There's a lady on the other side of town who makes nice suits, but they're more for the hippie who's going to Washington D.C. to crack down on some fat cats. And though it may be a moral failing, I'm not headed for D.C. to crack fat cats.

Anyways, I'm yearning for plain these days.
