I did a shorter (350m swim, 15k bike, 3.2k run in ~53 min) in May as my attempt to put it all together and develop a strategy for irongirl syracuse. Both were women specific events and a large number of participants were just like you, coming to challenge themselves but not necessarily race. Everyone was celebrated. </p> <p>As Staysfit mentioned, this was a lake swim. My first was a pool swim. I use a Garmin Forerunner 935 multisport watch with HR chest strap. I train pretty seriously and am currently self-coaching. If you look at a map of New York, there are a series of lakes that look like fingers because the individual lake extends north to south across the state but they are situated east to west across the state separated by various distances, hence the term “Finger Lakes Region”. There are wineries, fishing, boating and all activities associates with water around the lakes. Onondaga, the lake which is associated with Syracuse, is polluted with chemicals from past industry. They have tried to clean it up, but the fish still have higher mercury content than they should. Mine was a novice distance; 250m Swim / 10km Bike / 2km Run which took me 53:12.&nbsp; I didn't really train much for it though&nbsp; (a couple of swim sessions, rode my bike to work and was already running) and also finished feeling like I could have pushed harder (unlike&nbsp;you, from the sound of it!) &nbsp;I got over my logistical hangups though, that had prevented me ever&nbsp;doing one&nbsp;before&nbsp; - working out how transition works, what to bring etc. I'd like to do a longer one next Australian summer.</p> <p>I think your strong background in cycling really helps. I was using a borrowed bike with a rubbing brake and every time I changed gears people overtook me. But the biggest hurdle was making myself realise that it was a race, but just a pleasant sunday cycle. My commuting rides, which had lots of slow bits because there are driveways I need to watch out for, weren't great preparation). I found swimming easier despite the lack of training because I did train as a teenager - even then though, doing it at a beach rather than&nbsp; a pool was strange. I don’t mind it at all, I was warm at the start in my wet suit. DH says the rain cell was over the transition area and he got very wet. The roads were wet but I don’t recall much rain on the bike and run course. I liked that it wasn’t warm. I went very hard (as planned) Average HR 4bpm above lactate threshold HR on bike and run, with max HR’s observed on both. Yet I always felt I was doing exactly my plan and it felt good. Was more moderate on swim to keep a clear head. No results posted yet, but my Garmin has given a lot of feedback. I am 95% certain that I will register for national age group championships. Met a great woman who won her 60-69 age group that will be there and she was very encouraging. On the road heading home. We had a wonderful weekend in Syracuse and I loved the triathlon route. I exceeded my time goal of 1:40-1:45 with a time of 1:37:30 (unofficial). 600m swim, 30km bike (19 miles) and 5km run (3.1 miles). I chose this event in part because of the long bike, which is my strength, and because it is a women’s event — made some friends before and after. My place was a surprising 12th overall and 4th in my 40-44 age group. Super happy with my results. Floating on air — which is good because my legs are very very tired. Clothing chosen for road tripping and athletics rather than fashion, but this asymmetric Athleta dress is very fun, kind of dramatic and avant garde. Purposely emphasizes my IT tendency. Worn with cream colored flat Miz Mooz, so in keeping with friday’s blog post. You captured our experience perfectly! </p> <p>When I saw that Toban was coming to Syracuse, I knew I would find a way to meet her. The Iron Girl mostly attracts local athletes so it’s great to know that it’s drawing others to our community. The swim at Oneida Shores Park, is cold and choppy, but Toban feels confident and looks strong, plus she’s prepared with a wetsuit. She said many of the racers were scrambling at the last minute to purchase them.</p> <p>Shopping around here is limited to the mall or a few small boutiques. The community is made up of a series of small historical villages cobbled together along the original Native American trails that have now become our roads. The villages spread mostly east and west around the city of Syracuse. They mostly coincide with lakes, some of them finger lakes, but not all of them. Ithaca is about an hour drive south, Cortland is about 30 minutes. Apples are a major farming product to the south, and onions, potato’s, and corn grow in most of the fields around the villages east and west of the city. Dairy farms are also very common. Syracuse itself has an interesting history because the Erie Canal went right through it at one point, it had a major salt mining industry in the past, and there was a lot of other industry here in the past. Among the interesting things produced here were the Brannock device, Smith-(Corona) Type Writers, and Carrier Air conditioners. The city has lots of old and sometimes abandoned factory/warehouses mixed with tons of Sears Catalog homes, Victorian style houses, and Craftsman style homes as well. The Stickley furniture factory is still operating in Manlius, one of the small villages. From downtown Syracuse, it’s a 15 minute drive to a completely rural area in any direction. </p> <p>Knowing we had only a couple hours, I suggested my favorite shoe boutique and the surrounding shops, with a plan to head to the next village if there was time. Toban found plenty in the shoe boutique and I was happy to catch up with the owners of the shop, a husband and wife team, whom I have known for many years. I didn’t risk trying anything on, because they know my feet, and my taste, and as soon as I jump down that rabbit hole, there is no climbing out! They also sell coats, handbags, and some jewelry. </p> <p>I found the necklace Toban mentions, at the third boutique. I have no clue what drew me to the necklace, because I wasn’t looking for necklaces, but I picked it up, put it on, and it was just right. I love it! It works great with my earrings. It’s true that I didn’t take it off, I wore it right out of the store! That’s true team wear! </p> <p>I also purchased a pretty top, a dress, and a loose knit cardigan to go with the dress. I know I said no loose knit cardigans, but it looked great with the dress, so I have already violated my “don’t buy” rule! I have no shopping willpower. </p> <p>Toban and I found much common ground, not only our love of color, and it was truly wonderful to meet her yesterday! I had hoped to go cheer for her and some of my friends who are also participants today, but DH and I are heading early this morning for Albany to meet up with my two SIL, niece and nephews for a mini family reunion!
