Lyn67, sounds so smart, a “fake” tweed pleated skirt would certainly be more wearable and fluid than a true tweed. And more washable in case of gravy stains!

These outfits are delightful. I’m inspired. My favourites are 1 and 5. I don’t think the gigham is a substitute for tweed but it is great anyway.

Super layering! I love all of these. I hear you on low-cost experimentation; it does usually lead to less-warm pieces. Fun but frustrating at the same time...

Those are very dramatic outfits.
I too am craving some warmth. I was shocked yesterday at how thin a velour tunic was. I can’t do wool or many other fabrics.

Why not! Love seeing your outfits here, like a fashion magazine!! Brilliant fake textures but true bright colors and pleasing contrast, wow! I have a pleated midi of a glenncheck pattern but of poly so it does not crease AND is much thinner then tweed- but I love it so! I no way would have bought it in real tweed as too much volume, and would have probably made me fat and more prone to overheating, so this item creates a perfect optical illusion, which I love!

Janet, I often veer into “wacky old aunt” territory myself. It’s quite dangerous because hubs’ mom is a retired art teacher— so the minute I put on too many beads/scarves, it’s game over from his perspective. :)

This shirtdress was a random purchase from Target last year. Made by “whoWhatWear” and sized way too big but for some reason it seems to sorta work... in hot weather I wear it unbuttoned over shorts, and it has a big sash that adds some flair.

Really fun and creative layering! Whenever I try to layer like that I just end up looking like someone’s wacky old aunt. I love that shirt dress and want to steal it from you. I have been wanting a great shirt dress to wear the same way, layered over pants and jeans, and have not found one yet that isn’t a ridiculous price.

Cardiff girl, it must be so tough to find warmth without wool!! Obviously you can find warm “gear” tech fabrics but the look is so much less polished in most cases.

All these are very good. The pants kind of do look a bit like tweed. Great to see you getting use out of your gingham dress even in colder temperatures :). Why not?

Well excellent outfits, but I hear you about the problem with think layers that look good and are too cold. I love substituting vintage or thrift finds for current stuff, and it does take a bit of imagination. Next time I have some time I will try to find some examples.

Exactly what Suz said. Got answer your question, I also love tweeds but have very little. I have used a black and white plaid wool skirt as tweed and worn it with a black and white tweed vest. ( finds 1&2) Unfortunately, the skirt looks more grey than black and white. Now I think the vest may work with the third find...animal print as tweed?

Thanks Suz! I’ve been experimenting so much with fashion this year, so buying larger quantity but lower quality than ever before. You really notice it when it comes to WArMTH! That coat looks wonderful- I love the long, slim lines- but it is totally worthless as a “coat” since it is one thin layer of polyester. Time to switch back to some older, higher quality woolens as winter sinks its teeth in. The motorbike ride this morning was icy!

I think your coat actually gives a tweedy impression. The plaid and gingham are not really "tweedy" but they do offer a similar kind of visual interest. I love all these outfits on you.

I’ve been craving tweed this autumn, but don’t have much of it in my closet. This week I experimented with using plaid pants or a gingham dress to create a tweed-like texture. Unfortunately they’re just not as warm as real tweed!

Have you done anything similar lately? Substitutions using what you have instead of what you want?
